FOR HEALTHY LIVING
Nov 2010 For Healthy Living Last month we introduced you to the first of our three areas of focus: For Youth Development. This month we'd like to share about our second area of focus: For Healthy Living.

Behind "For Healthy Living" is the fact that across the nation and right here in Virginia, the Y is a leading voice on health and well-being. With a mission centered on balance, the Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, millions of youth, adults and families receive the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.

FAMILY VOLUNTEER NIGHT
Help give a local family their Happy Thanksgiving on Family Volunteer Night Thursday, November 18, 2010.

 Nov 2010 Family Volunteer Night

Each year, the Hampton Family YMCA supports the community by collecting food items for families that are less fortunate. With the help of volunteers on Family Volunteer Day, the donated items are made into decorated food baskets to be delivered in time for Thanksgiving dinner.

Please consider giving your support to these families by providing food donations or volunteering on Family Volunteer Day. It is a perfect chance to demonstrate how even a small effort is so hugely appreciated.

The following donations are accepted through Tuesday, November 16, 2010:

Canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned chicken broth, boxed stuffing, rice, bagged sugar, muffin mixes, canned gravy, macaroni and cheese, instant mashed potatoes, Bisquick or store brand baking mix, canned evaporated milk, Ramen noodles, cereal, peanut butter, $10 to $20 gift cards to local grocery stores for turkeys.

SPOTLIGHT ON AMY GREEN

You see Amy Green teaching Princess Ballet on Saturday mornings in our Spirit, Mind, and Body Room but you may not have had a chance to speak with her about her passion for ballet or her background in the dance community.

Amy graduated from the Juilliard School of Music with a Masters in Dance History. She studied with the New York City Ballet and danced with the Joffrey Ballet, the Radio City Music Hall Ballet, and the Miami City Ballet.

Amy has instructed people of all ages and skill levels in the Miami City Ballet, the Miami-Dade Public School System, as the Director of an after-school dance program in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami and served as the Dance Director for the City of Miami's Parks and Recreation Department.

We are so pleased to have Amy instructing our Princess Ballet classes, we're sure you'll love her too! Click here to sign up online or see the Welcome Center for more information on Princess Ballet.

NEW CHILD WATCH AND YOUTH WATCH CHECK IN

In an effort to ensure the safety of the your children while they are in Child/Youth Watch, we will soon implement a new check in system. The goal of this system set to begin the week of November 8th is to:

-Ensure that all members and their children have been scanned in at the Membership Desk.

-Help Child/Youth Watch staff more easily associate a child with their parent(s).

-Ensure that the person picking up the child is authorized to do so.

Check In Procedures

1. Have each family member's key tag scanned at the Welcome Center.

2. Membership Staff will give you a coil bracelet with a numbered tag on it. You are to keep this tag with you for the duration of your visit.

3. You will also be given a colored card for each child being placed in CW/YW.

4. Proceed to CW/YW, present the colored card to the CW/YW Staff and sign your child in as usual.

5. When you return to CW/YW to pick up your child present the numbered tag to the CW/YW Staff so that they may release your children to you.

As always, we value the opinion of our Members. If you have any questions or concerns about the new system, please see Michele Patchett, Youth and Family Services Director. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we set this new system in place.

FACILITY AND POOL LOBBY HOLIDAY CLOSING

Happy Thanksgiving! As a reminder, we will be closed Thursday, November 24th for the holiday. Also, our Pool Lobby Scan Desk will be closed for the week of Thanksgiving due to the break in Swimming Lessons.

The Pool Lobby Scan Desk will re-open for regular hours Monday, November 29th 3:45 pm - 8:00 pm.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving.
