Volunteers Needed!
Old Point Tidewater Triathlon
Saturday, June 12th
The Hampton Family YMCA Strong Communities Campaign is the affliliated charity for this event.
The Old Point Tidewater Triathlon is looking for volunteers to help in a variety of different positions where you and your family would be able to work together while helping the community that you live in.
Held in conjunction with the 400th anniversary of Hampton, there will be lots of festivities for you and the family to enjoy after this race and over the course of the weekend.
Please consider volunteering for this event in support of helping families get the opportunity to participate in programs and services provided by the Hampton Family YMCA through Strong Communities.
Funds contributed through the Strong Communities Campaign are used for day camp, school age child care, and outreach programs such as Bright Beginnings. Funds generated also give individuals the opportunity to improve health through membership to the YMCA and the opportunity to participate in sports, family programming, swim lessons and health & wellness programs.
Click here to see a listing of volunteer positions available. If you have any questions, please contact Eric Hecker, Aquatics Director, at (757) 722-9044 ext. 216 or at eric.hecker@peninsulaymca.org. |
YMCA IMPACT
From Robbie Koll, Silver Sneakers Aerobic Instructor
What a blessing the Hampton YMCA has been to me over the past 25 years! Back in 1984 I was hired to teach low/impact - step aerobics, here at the Y. It has been so fullfilling, meeting so many wonderful people and helping them to get and stay healthy.
And, three years ago, this November, I was honored to be asked to participate in the teaching of our Older Adult population, with the Silver Sneakers Program.
This was truly an added gift that has been so wonderfully challenging and rewarding. Teaching seniors in their 60's up to the upper 80's is such a unique experience. My group of about 40 seniors, have become not only class members, but "extended family." They are so thoughtful with each other and so caring of everyone around them. Helping them stay healthy and interact in the community is such an honor for me...
Kudos to the Silver Sneakers Program and to the Hampton YMCA.

4 Summer Shape Up Mistakes
Health Tip from Lee Grandison, Wellness Director
- Not eating breakfast - Do not skip meals in an attempt to lose weight. Be reminded that your body has not had fuel for over 6 hours and this continued fast will cause the body to lower metabolism.
- Doing too many crunches - Toning the mid section is achieved by a combination of exercise and nutrition. Crunches alone will not cause the desired result.
- Not exercising at the proper intensity - Our bodies were designed for work and to adapt quickly to the loads we place on it. Interval training is one of the best methods to train the body to work at higher intensities for more effective caloric expenditure.
- Waiting to the last minute - Research has proven 1 to 2 lbs of weight loss or 1% of body weight is most effective for permanent weight loss. Losing more weight faster has a higher risk of injury and a great chance of regaining the weight loss, 3500 calories = a pound of fat.
