Mom's Advice May Save Lives

A study of more than 300,000 people suggests that Mom was right. "Eat your fruit and vegetables," is good advice, especially when it comes to addressing heart disease risk.

 

Focus on food to lower heart disease risk
Researchers collected information on diet and exercise habits, medical conditions, and other health-related behaviors, such as alcohol and tobacco use, from men and women in eight European countries. None of the study participants had experienced a heart attack or stroke before the start of the study. The group was followed for an average of 8.4 years.
  
After accounting for other factors that may affect the risk of dying of heart disease, the researchers found that compared with people eating fewer than three servings of fruit and vegetables per day, those who ate eight or more servings of these foods daily had 22% lower risk of having a fatal heart attack. As well, risk of death due to heart disease dropped by 4% for each additional 80-gram portion-about 3 ounces-of fruit and vegetables a person ate each day.

Mango-Ginger-Curry Soup with Shrimp

A bowl of this succulent soup can help you burn up to 30 percent more fat during a later workout, courtesy of the vitamin C in subtly sweet mangoes.

 

Yield: Makes 4 servings

 

Ingredients
2 ripe mangoes (about 1 pound each), peeled and cubed
1/2 cup chopped shallots
1 large clove garlic, chopped
1 teaspoon finely grated ginger
1/2 teaspoon curry powder (or more to taste)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 can (13.6 ounces) light coconut milk
1/2 cup coconut water
3 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (or more to taste)
1 cup cooked, diced shrimp
3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

 

Preparation
Pulse mangoes, shallots, garlic, ginger, curry powder and salt in a food processor until pureed. Add coconut milk; pulse until well combined. Transfer mango mixture to a bowl; stir in coconut water and lime juice. (Thin with tap water if desired.) Cover and chill until cold, 1 hour. Divide among 4 bowls; garnish with shrimp and cilantro before serving.

Fitness at the Lake
Taking the family to the lake this summer? Great. Water is a perfect place to exercise in the heat and humidity of summer. Swimming is an obvious choice, says Patrick Ayres, MS, exercise physiologist at Lifestyle Management in Bloomington, Minn.

 

"Swimming or treading water is a great way to work the cardiovascular system," he says. "Lots of people go to the lake and get motor boats," he says. "If you are boating, go out to an area, stop the boat and anchor, and do some swimming."

Don't get caught up in the idea that the exercise has to be a consistent 30 minutes, says Ayres. "Recreational activities can also be exercise," he says, and doing something is better than nothing. Ten minutes or so a few times throughout the day will add up.
