Immune System Boost May Help Athletes Stay Healthy

By Jane Hart, MD

Athletes need to stay healthy in order to perform at maximal capacity and intensity, but too much exercise may actually weaken the immune system and leave them vulnerable to upper-respiratory infections, such as colds or flu. A study in the European Journal of Applied Physiology reports an immune-system boost to athletes who took beta-glucan supplements and fewer incidents of upper-respiratory infections.

Boosting immunity
Prior research has shown that regular, moderate exercise may help boost the immune system and reduce respiratory infections, but research has also shown that people who engage in regular, intense and prolonged exercise-such as athletes-may be at increased risk for respiratory infections.

HEALTHY RECIPES
Sunshine Salad with Orange Vinaigrette

Salad:
2 large heads Boston lettuce
2 oranges, peeled and cut into segments or chunks
1/2 C. soaked sunflower seeds* (easy directions below)
1 C. slivered almonds, toasted
2 green onions, chopped
1 can sliced water chestnuts, drained & julienned
1 avocado, cubed

Orange Vinaigrette:
1/2 C. grape seed or safflower oil
1/4 C. rice wine vinegar
2 T. fresh orange juice
1/2 t. salt
1/8 t. pepper
1-2 t. honey
A bit of orange peel...not too much

*Put 1/2 C. raw sunflower seeds in a jar with a lid. Add water to cover. Put the lid on and soak for around 6 hours. Drain before using in the salad. You can set them out to soak before you leave for the day and they will be ready by the time you come home. Once you have tried these, you'll want to use them all the time.

1.)  Toss all the salad ingredients, except the almonds in a large bowl.
2.)  Put all the vinaigrette ingredients in a 16 oz. jar with a lid.  Put the lid on and shake. Pretty simple, huh?
3.)  Put the dressing on about 10 minutes before you are going to serve. Top with almonds. Everybody Tango!!!

FITNESS TIPS
The Couch-to-5K Running Plan
by Josh Clark

Too many people have been turned off of running simply by trying to start off too fast. Their bodies rebel, and they wind up miserable, wondering why anyone would possibly want to do this to themselves.

You should ease into your running program gradually. In fact, the beginners' program we outline here is less of a running regimen than a walking and jogging program. The idea is to transform you from couch potato to runner, getting you running three miles (or 5K) on a regular basis in just two months.

HEALTHY HUMOR
A Good April Fool's Prank

1985: Sports Illustrated published a story about a new rookie pitcher who planned to play for the Mets. His name was Sidd Finch, and he could reportedly throw a baseball at 168 mph with pinpoint accuracy. This was 65 mph faster than the previous record. Surprisingly, Sidd Finch had never even played the game before. Instead, he had mastered the "art of the pitch" in a Tibetan monastery under the guidance of the "great poet-saint Lama Milaraspa." Mets fans celebrated their teams' amazing luck at having found such a gifted player, and Sports Illustrated was flooded with requests for more information. In reality this legendary player only existed in the imagination of the author of the article, George Plimpton.
