Like This Veggie? Try That One!

Grocery Store

If you're tired of the same-old produce picks, switch them out for these delish and superhealthy alternatives.

Like carrots? Try parsnips.
This cousin of the carrot has a more complex, sweet, nutty flavor. And one cup packs a whopping seven grams of fiber (double that of carrots), which fends off hunger pangs. Other perks: a stellar amount of vitamin C and folate, plus almost 40 percent of your daily requirement of vitamin K, a hard-to-get nutrient that researchers are realizing may improve bone health and control blood sugar.

SUPPLEMENT SPOTLIGHT
Finding the Folic Acid, Vitamin B Balance

Folic acid is a B vitamin that our diet provides when Folic acid is a B vitamin that our diet provides when we eat leafy greens, dry beans, and some fruits and other vegetables. Most cereal and grain products are fortified with folic acid because of a 13-year-old US Food and Drug Administration policy. In addition to natural and fortified sources, many popular nutritional supplements provide a significant amount of folic acid, leading researchers to wonder if some people might be getting too much. A new report published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition answers their concerns: less than 3% of Americans exceed the recommended upper limit of 1,000 mcg of folic acid intake per day, and all of them get a portion of their folic acid from supplements.

Tips for Your New Year's Resolutions

NYSand

It's an annual tradition with many vying to achieve their ideal weight and others planning to quit smoking and while some of these New Year's resolutions may seem like difficult goals one expert says they can be achieved if you create new habits.

Athletes Nation personal trainer Dan LaJoie works with some of the province's most elite athletes and he says the same principles he applies to his clients can be used by the average person.

"You set goals first, you come up with a plan and then with that plan you start to create some habits and then with those habits you start to get results," LaJoie said.

HEALTHY HUMOR, LAUGH IT UP

James Agate: "New Year's Resolution: To tolerate fools more gladly, provided this does not encourage them to take up more of my time."

Eric Zorn: "Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of self assessment and repentance that demands personal honesty and, ultimately, reinforces humility. Breaking them is part of the cycle."

Oscar Wilde:"Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account."
