Staying Healthy During Cold and Flu Season  

As if cold & flu season wasn't enough to keep health-seekers on full tilt, we now have the added stress of H1N1 to worry about. The long stretch from October to March can be a testing one, however there are things that we can all do to keep ourselves healthy. With the 2009-2010 flu season predicted to be one of the worst on record, now is the time to understand and practice preventative measures. Some of these may border common knowledge, some may seem new, and still some may seem unnecessary. But if you follow them consistently, your chances of making it through the season unscathed can be greatly increased. Let's explore a few of the most effective tactics.

You may have seen some recent headlines touting the ability of curcumin to inhibit stomach cancer in the lab. (Curcumin is the active ingredient in the spice turmeric, which lends curry its distinctive yellow color.)

These new findings with stomach cancer cells are only the latest to suggest that this hotly studied spice may possess anti-cancer potential. AICR has funded several grants involving curcumin; in these and other studies, curcumin seems to reduce the formation and growth of breast and colon cancer cells.
 
 
HEALTHY RECIPES
Agave Popcorn Balls
 
Ingredients
6 cups popped NOW Organic Popcorn* (about ¼ cup unpopped)
2/3 cup NOW Natural Almonds*, chopped
1/4 cup grain-sweetened chocolate chips (optional)
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons NOW Organic Agave Nectar*
1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon almond butter or tahini
1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix popcorn, almonds, and chocolate chips (if using) in a large mixing bowl. Heat agave nectar, almond butter or tahini, and salt in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once syrup starts to get light, frothy, and bubbly, cook and stir constantly for another 30 seconds. Pour syrup over popcorn and mix with a wooden spoon until incorporated. Let cool completely.

When cooled, press small handfuls into balls with your fingers. These will keep for 2-3 days, covered, at room temperature.

Makes 16-20 balls.

Per Serving: 124 calories, 59% fat calories, 9g fat, 1g sat fat, 0mg cholesterol, 2g protein, 11g carbohydrate, 1g fiber, 114mg sodium
