Red Yeast Rice Recognized for Lowering Cholesterol

By some estimates, as many as 10% of people who take cholesterol-lowering statins experience troubling muscle pain, and many stop taking the drugs because of it.

Now a new study suggests that a dietary supplement sold in nutrition centers and grocery stores may be a useful alternative to statins for some.

People who took red yeast rice supplements and completed a 12-week lifestyle intervention program experienced bigger reductions in LDL "bad" cholesterol than patients who completed the same lifestyle program but took placebo pills.

SUPPLEMENT SPOTLIGHT
Pycnogenol Pycnogenol

Pycnogenol® is a concentrated natural extract from the bark of pine trees that grow in the Landes Forest of southwestern France. It is the only species of tree that grows in this 4,000 square mile forest. These pine trees contain concentrated levels of unique flavonoid compounds that support the body's ability to neutralize free radicals. Free radicals (reactive molecules) can inhibit immune functions and expedite the aging process.

Studies have proven pine bark extract will decrease the symptoms of jet lag. The extract has been researched for several years and proves to be a potent antioxidant. It is an anti-inflammatory agent, dilates blood vessels and binds collagen to elastin. It will boost the effects of vitamin C while extending the time vitamin C remains in the body. Asian medicine has used pine bark for centuries and has been known to be used as a tea by early Europeans. Practitioners recommend taking a 50mg capsule per day a couple days before a long trip and one more during the trip.

HEALTHY RECIPES
BBQ Chicken

Lightly brown four chicken breasts (take skin off first) in 1/3 to 1/2 cup NOW Olive Oil* (item #1830).  Sprinkling with paprika first helps browning.  Put the lightly browned chicken in a flat baking dish and pour any leftover olive oil over it.  Over low heat, combine the following ingredients:

1/4 cup chopped onion
1 Tablespoon vinegar
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 cup NOW Maple Syrup* (item #6948)

Pour sauce over the chicken breasts.

Bake covered at 400 degrees for 1/2 hour.  Uncover and bake 10 minutes more.  Check to make sure the sauce doesn't dry out; if so, add a small amount of water.

FITNESS TIPS
Freestyle Swimming Tips

The freestyle swimming stroke (also called front crawl) is the most popular style. When executed properly, it's fast and clean; that's why it's used in triathlon. But there's more to it than a swimming pool, goggles, and a pair of Speedos. Without proper coaching, many swimmers waste energy and sacrifice speed. Read on for form and stroke techniques that will help get more bang for the buck.

Swimming is the perfect complement to running and is considered to be one a top fitness activity. It works the entire body and puts less strain on the joints, muscles, and connective tissues than many other sports.

HEALTHY HUMOR, LAUGH IT UP
How to Have a Long, Healthy Life

A woman walked up to a wrinkled, little old man rocking in a chair on his porch.
"I couldn't help noticing how happy you look," she said. "What's your secret for a long happy life?"
"I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day," he said. "I also drink a case of whiskey a week, eat fatty foods, and never exercise."
"That's amazing!" said the woman, "How old are you?"
"Twenty-six."
