ITS A NEW DAY (unless you got this yesterday)
Summer 2009
happy pap

Hello Friends and Scallywags!
Hope this newsletter finds you all in a good state.   If you have been holding your breath waiting for your Illustration updates, please exhale and accept my apologies. These past few months standing in the buffet line of life, I didnt think I had much on my plate,
nothing to write home about really.  I'm A girl that likes my plate  stacked high as a pancake tower with existential syrup dripping over the edge, so you can imagine how I didn't even recognize how much I had. A few semi-empty plates (half full plates) can really add up.  I'm talking about the illustration projects that have filled my days, but, There may be a connection to why I can't zip my pants up. Speaking of  unzipped pants...Why is there a picture of a woman wearing a tiara and preparing for  ( or recovering from a pap smear) greeting me so eagerly? it seemed logical at the the time.
gynoco-logical.....ahahah. eh?

What does all that have to do with Art and illustration you may ask?   It was a long drawn out story...and I long to draw out stories.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

I underwent the most giant breast reduction surgury ever performed in January and I completed my first Triathalon on my 34th birthday in May, I learned to swim for this event which involved an open water swim in shark infested water, despite my unyielding fear that something might bite my new boobs ( and I would have been pissed) all was well and I survived.  I  have not gotten off the couch since.

My boys are growing like aggressive tumors, but in a good way. The other day I overheard Ogden (3yrs) playing "drive -thru "  by himself in the playroom, "yes is this McDonald's, I'd like chicken nuggets, fries and chocolate milk, Thank you, Please"  so proud, he has such good manners.  My Kosmo (2yrs) learned to say Cookie, everything is a cookie, all day long with this kid. So Finally, we have something in common.

  Mural Contest
Charelston South Carolina
August 18 - September 2
If You live within reasonable driving disatnce to Charelston, like  6 or 7 hours top, don't go out of your way or anything, Please stop by Alchemy Coffee Shop and vote for my entry. So this is embarassing, I recieved an out of the blue email from someone on the steering committee for the competition, telling me about it, and I totally misunderstood and thought they were offering me a job. So I was like all fumuddelled when I found out it was a competition , let alone one judged by the public. Thats not even My public up there. If it was local I could ensure a win with bribes and forcefull posturing to my friends. But up there how will anyone know how good it is , if I'm not berating them with the obvious. So Please vote for my Mural.  You can fill out a ballot slip in Alchemy Coffee located at 11 Magnolia Road Charelston

if you have the urge to vote for someone else, your welcome stay home.

REUSABLE BAGS SAVE THE WORLD

Does this Bag make my Butt look big?
Also this summer I had the eye opening pleasure of creating a line of reusable bags for the University of Georgia Marine Extension. These are the kind of bags that they have at supermarkets so that you can stop using the plastic ones. While working on this project I was haunted by the revelation that 36,000 pieces of plastic float in every square mile of our ocean. I decided right then and there to make a change in my life, My goal...no more plastic bags!  Except that sometimes I forget my reusable bags at home and then Im like, screw it I'll just carry all these groceries in my bare arms, So if you happen upon some bananas or raw chicken in the parking lot, sorry Thats mine.

THE FLYING DEBRIS
The reusable bag project led to a fulfillment of a dream for me.  I recently completed a poster series for the Marine Extension, to bring awareness to the problem of Marine Debris. These Posters will be distributed at educational events. They tell  the story of an unusual Sea otter and his friends who live on an island of trash in the sea , they long to get off of the island to find real land, so they build a flying machine, the flying debris. I had the idea for this story about 7 years ago, It was just sitting on my brain shelf getting dusty, so pulling it down and having the oppertunity to work on it was thrilling!  It was also great to work on the drawings, hours and hours of intricately drawn trash, because people would come up to me and ask" what are you drawing" and I had the chance to say" Oh its just trash" and they would crane thier necks and say " Oh No its really good" and I would say " Yeah I know its good , I am actually Drawing trash"  Oh if I had a nickle for everytime I got to say that this summer, I would have almost a dollar for  sure.

MAGAZINE COVERS
LOGOS-A-GO-GO
I DRAW FOR FOOD
YOU TOTALLY CAN JUDGE  A MAGAZINE BY THE COVER
Paisly / Pink Magazine Cover
I was totally psyched to be featured on the cover of Paisley and Pink magazine in July. This Magazine has become a staple in the coastal  scene, and it was a true honor to have my work featured on the cover.  Not only that, but they did a  really nice article on me in which they published a portion of the "list of 25 things about me"  that I wrote on facebook, so see, those facebook things aren't a frivolous misuse of time! My next goal, is to publish my list of "what am I doing now" and "things I would want in a Zombie apocalypse"
The magazine also hosts monthly parties at local establishments. I like to pretend I receive exclusive invitations to these, But I will confess they are open to anyone who reads the magazine (the invite is on the opening page) or listens to the radio, or happens to walk by. A really fun way to meet local folks, network and enjoy being a woman.

At our Fingertips Magazine cover
I was also Psyched to win the cover contest for Southern Legend Publishing. At Your Fingertips is a travel guide for middle georgia. The best thing about this cover is that they managed to take a horizontal picture and turn it into a vertical cover without losing pertinent information, Ahhh alot of cropping skills. A Cropload. This drawing was actually a shower gift for a baby friend, but it has seen alot of action and is also the poster for a Kids Fishing rodeo sponsored by Jones County Farm Bureau and The US Forestry Service.
LOGOS-A-GO-GO

Beach Fest Logo

August 20th thru Aug 22 if you find yourself near Jekyll Island GA .You will want to be at the Beach Music Festival and BBQ Bash I'm not exactly sure what goes down at this event, I'm guessing some sort of beach music and meat, but don't take my word for it, strap on your adventurous spirit and be all spontaneous, maybe dance around or something. I hear "date night" but then my hearing is phenomenal.

Check it out!

I love the way the designers utilized different elements of this logo in all their marketing for this event, it is all over the isIand.  I  had originally drawn dancing pigs for this project, but then it was decided that no one wants to see their food all happy and dancing before being roasted and slathered in sauce. Dancing pigs still available for clip art for the less sensitive individual.

The Humane Society
Every year Monkey Wrench Bicycles partners with a local charity to raise money in a Cruise for a Cause. Cleverly this ride takes place across the Torras Causeway. This years ride raised funds for the Humane Society of Coastal GA. Monkey Wrench bicycles is located on St. Simons island, and is the place to go for all your bike fixin needs. Or your bike fix in general, if your like that with bikes. 1700 Frederica Rd
St Simons Island, GA  (912) 634-5551
And what can be said about the Human Society really, Its a No kill Shelter...just the sort of thing you look for in a shelter if you find yourself roaming the neighborhood looking for a place to shack up. In addition to posters they made a cool shirt outta this, occasionally I find myself standing in line behind it.

THIS TOTALLY
ALMOST HAPPENED

AND MAYBE STILL MIGHT
I was really excited to work on the Menu and Marketing materials for Blackbeard's Restaurant on Jekyll Island. This is a restaurant right on thebeach, with so much potential its ridiculous.
This was an interesting project, as the name
of the place is Blackbeard's, but there is no reference to a pirate, They did not want a cliche pirate themed restaurant,
but something fun and different.   While brainstorming for this project I was flooded with ideas, from  "Black Beard the bearded Collie" to
" BlackBeard The Talking Black Board" ( with chalk writing oh! tragic)
While presenting my sketches, I actually presented the asinine concept
of Black beard Being a bearded clam ..DO NOT GOOGLE THAT. I thought I remembered a bearded clam being an actual animal... The wise folks that be overlooked that idea and the fact that I said bearded clam out loud in doors in a fine establishment. Ultimately we came up with this kind of younger hipper, well travelled wind surfing distant relative of Blackbeards and designed the coolest menu ever. All travel themed and fun. I spent most of the winter trying to get just the right expression on the face of Wild GA shrimp, partying it up in a bowl of grits, and making calamari for the adventurous replete with Indiana Jones' Fedora.  But alas some things don't come to fruition as  we might hope in the time frame that we desire (ie... that which correlates with my newsletter) The direction of the restaurant is still uncertain I'm not sure what will happen on the menu front, but don't worry, I got paid ( is that tacky to say ) And I had a blast working on it.
So even though My menu and marketing ideas are not the feature of the restaurant and they are relying on like the deliciousness of the food, I urge you to visit Blackbeards, We went on Saturday evening and were delighted by a roving guitar player who mesmerized everyone in the place and warm bread sticks and a walk on the beach afterwards. And if you sit down and look over the daily selections printed plainly on a piece of paper and happen to say "excuse me, this won't do, I wanted to see the Awesome menu" ...... I wont be mad at cha!

Susan Berg

OK, I am Not a Graphic Designer. But...every once in a while a person or a project so special and intriguing come across my desk and I can't resist laying down my "fuzzy bunny riding moonbeams kinda mindset," and putting on my grown up clothes, laundered clean and pressed.  Both of these things occurred when Susan Berg told me about her book and her vision. Totally out of my comfort zone, and completely worth it! Working on this book involved some of the most satisfying brainstorming I can recall.  Choose on Purpose is  a book about  finding your way in the world, and bringing your talent to life. It's for twentysomethings, but it has inspired me....and I am considerably older then that.  This book is so smartly designed it was thrilling to be a part of.  I only designed a few of the logos associated with this project, but I was very proud to share in the creative process leading to the development of the other graphics.
As an artisitic consultant I was able to bring Susans ideas to a visual level. I discovered I love doing that and would gladly Choose on Purpose to do it again.

In these tough economic times, art often takes a backseat to toilet paper and sustenance, I've been told, but then I once spent my last 100 bucks on some ninja suits. Really I can only guess at what this thing called fiscal responsibility feels like. Burlap slacks?  I urge you to continue spending your hard earned money on things that make life more personal, interesting and hilarious. If that advice steers you wrong , sorry? your welcome to crash on my couch.
Sincere thanks for your continued support and encouragement,
as always I relish your comments and ideas.
