Greetings!

With SummerMotion a hit this year, I'll tell you what's up next. Also, what is going on on Central Avenue behind the Elks Club? Also, in this email, what's that loud roar over Ashland on some week nights at 10:25. Central Park Library fountain update, living downtown, and news you can't use.

SUMMER MOTION A BIG HIT

Up next, Boyd County Fair & Poage Landing Days
 Boyd County Fair
With SummerMotion 2009 in the books, up next is Boyd County Fair August 18th and Ashland's Poage Landing Days which is always the third weekend in September.

WHAT'S GOING ON CENTRAL AVE?
ELKSBehind Elks Club

Notice the bulldozer and removal of sod behind the Elks Club?

It is construction of a parking lot for the new building behind Citizens Bank which is owned by a local developer and will be mostly occupied by KDMC workers who will move from old power company building to new location. Both the building and parking lot will be on the tax rolls.

WHAT'S THAT LOUD PLANE OVER ASHLAND EVERY NIGHT AT 10:25?
 Fed Ex Drop Box
Expecting or shipping a package? There's a hint pictured at right.

If you're shipping a FedEx package or letter, there's a good chance you'll hear it roar over the Ashland area about 10:25 on most weeknights.  FedEx operate a mini hub at TriState Airport and after feeder planes arrive from rural areas, they are loaded onto a FedEx jet that frequently flies to Columbus, or points north, before getting to Memphis. It leaves every night at 10:22 PM and returns at 5:15 AM. If you're curious how your package gets to grandma's house in rural Idaho or elsewhere by 10:30 the next morning, or that important letter from Japan gets on your desk in a day, watch this.

WHO IS 20 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR?

May be hard to believe, but the Ashland Town Center Mall is twenty years old come October 2009. Watch the mall web site for a celebration and coming sales.

DOWNTOWN LIVING
 Kitchen BldgCity takes first step

The Kitchen Building
located at 15th and
Winchester,
and once was Second
National Bank and
later the Steckler's Building, is under design to be converted to an apartment building with retail on the first floor. A Louisville developer is behind the design and the city commission voted to take the first step towards providing a federal tax credit with use of Community Block Grand Funds needed to make this possible. This building will not be low income apartments.

Meanwhile, the Sears Building, which remains a terrible eyesore in downtown, goes out for bid to be demolished.

LIBRARY COMMONS FOUNTAIN UPDATE
Central Park Libra. FountainBe Back Soon

A recent
article in the Daily Independent
reported
the popular
water
fountain
located at
Library Commons of Central Park is out of service. That's true. It'll be back soon. City Manager Steve Corbitt reports a new non slip surface, which will cost several thousand dollars, will be placed on the the surface which will allow water flowing to resume. Unfortunately, it'll be up 75 days before it is fully restored.
