Sewer Update
Perhaps you've read in the Ashland paper about the City's effort to control and mitigate combined sewer overflows (CSO). There is no way to paint a pretty picture of
this problem which must be addressed to conform to the
federal Clean Water Act.
Many older cites designed their sewer collection systems
a single piping systems that also collect runoff from
streets and roofs. Some 772 communities, pictured above,
need to comply with the federal law by 2017.
A CSO is a type of sewer system which provides partially
separated channels for separated channels for sanitary
and storm water runoff. This allows the sanitary sewer
system to provide backup capacity for the runoff sewer
volumes are unusually high, but it is an antiquated
system that is vulnerable to CSO discharges during peak
rainfall events.
Ashland is seeking federal stimulus funds to offset the estimated $40 million costs. We have no choice left other
than to comply with this federal mandate.
