On the House: Mortgage picture is fuzzy
For a few weeks, I've been hearing that obtaining a mortgage or refinancing one has gotten easier. What I've found, instead, is the lending climate is unpredictable. David S. Broida of Haverford, for example, sounds like a customer lenders would fight over. A couple of years ago, Broida bought an Exton townhouse as an investment rental property. The unit has a $299,000 mortgage, fixed at 55/8 percent, and an appraised value of $350,000. Considering that fixed rates in the last three months have been as low as 4.85 percent for credit-worthy borrowers, Broida decided to refinance to cut his monthly payment. He tried to find a lender.
