Painting Without That Smell
New laws push paints to be eco-friendly and low on odor, but do they work as well?
Recently I repainted a wall in my house. As always, I put down drop cloths and opened windows to vent the headache-inducing odors. But this time I encountered a first: There were no odors.
I was using a "zero-VOC" paint from Home Depot called Freshaire. It's one of the newest entrants in a fast-growing segment of the $21 billion paint and coatings market: paint containing few or no volatile organic compounds. VOCs are solvents that disperse into the air as paint dries. They've long been used to help paint spread evenly and adhere to surfaces, among other performance properties.

Call to Action!
Over the past four years, a coalition of Pennsylvania's Business leaders and organizations-builders, manufacturers, health care providers, farmers, ect-- have been working tirelessly to see the Data Quality Act (SB 752) signed into law. This legislation requires all state agencies to provide the science behind regulations which they promulgate. There should be no opposition to this requirement-it's just good practice. Unfortunately, we are seeing opposition from the Governor's Office.
This legislation must be passed before the 2008 election.

Builder Leadership Panel
July 10th the HBA will be holding a Leadership Panel featuring HBA Builder of the Year winners, Frank McKee, Todd Pohlig and Chip Vaughan.
The panel will discuss some of the guiding principles of leadership that have been instrumental in their successes and how they are applying them to today's market challenges.
