Housing posts surprising rebound in April
WASHINGTON (AP) --- Construction of new homes posted the biggest increase in more than two years in April, a rare spot of good news amid the worst downturn in housing in more than two decades. The Commerce Department reported Friday that housing construction rose by 8.2 percent in April to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.03 million units. Building of single-family homes continued to weaken, however. The growth came from a big jump in apartment construction. Legislative Update
The HBA continues it's involvement in the regulatory process, meeting with officials from DEP to discuss draft revisions to the sewage regulations. During the meeting, industry representatives expressed concern about the direction the regulations appear headed, and the difficulty/cost of compliance if they were to be enacted. DEP officials were receptive to the concerns expressed. HBA Executive Vice President Michael McGee recently attended a briefing by the Chester County Water Resources Department, where they outlined the potential adoption of a countywide Act 167 plan. Attendees were given the opportunity to express the pros and cons of such a proposal. The concept will be reviewed with the Chester County Conservation District and the municipal officials in early June. The HBA continues to monitor and provide input on the revisions to Chester County's Landscapes revisions. A task force meeting held on Wednesday, May 21 at Longwood Gardens discussed open space revisions.
