Old wood,
new floors We get a lot of requests for reclaimed wood flooring. Unfortunately, we never recieve enough donations of flooring to meet demand. We also have some customers who admire the beauty of reclaimed wood, but they are nervous about working with used floorboards because some of the tongues & grooves may be damaged.
So, in order to provide a steadier supply of flooring, we are experimenting with a new partnership with a wood miller. He recently brought us 1000+ square feet of pine flooring that was re-milled from vintage barn and house timber. Because it is "new" flooring made from old wood, you have the best of both worlds: it has the beautiful grain and character of vintage boards, but it is in perfect shape and ready to be installed. He brought us two sizes of flooring in different grades for $5-$8 sq.ft. It's a little pricier than the salvaged flooring that we receive through donation, but it's already disappearing like hotcakes on a Sunday morning. Come check it out and let us know: should we stock this product regularly? |

Just wondering:
Does your employer or local government have a reuse or donation policy?
We were recently visited by Ginny K. from the Sustainable Maryland Certified
program at the Maryland Municipal League. This program helps local governments to green their communities.

After learning about our work, she is hoping to make reuse an official part of the program. However, she needs our help. She asks:
"Do you know of any organizations that have a "reuse clause" or policy? (In much the same way that businesses and governments have "Environmentally Preferable Procurement Policies," does this organization have "Reuse / Donation / Charity Preferable disposal policies," etc.?) If not, do you have any suggestions for ways that municipalities could go about establishing a reuse policy for municipal buildings, materials, etc?"

If you have any info or advice, please contact Ruthie and we'll pass it along.
Thanks so much,
Forklift Fans!

Golf for a good cause!
Christmas in April
of Prince George's County is a non-denominational volunteer organization. They repair homes of senior citizens who are low-income and/or physically challenged, making it possible for them to live in warmth, safety, and independence.
Christmas in April is one of many nonprofits that Community Forklift supports with donations of building materials. They are a FANTASTIC group, and we would like to encourage our Forklift Fans to support their upcoming golf tournament fundraiser. It will be held on September 26, 2011 at the courses at Andrews Air Force Base. There will also be a silent auction, door prizes, and goody bags - so come have fun for a good cause. For more details, please visit their website.
