Just a few days left for October Sales
Only a few days left to save on nails, screws, tiles, jet tubs, radiators, paints, stains, and wall ovens. Refer back to our last newsletter for the details.
Also, this weekend you can save 10% with our special Halloween discount!
Wear a costume to Community Forklift on October 30th or 31st. We will be giving out candy, and if we're impressed with your costume, you'll receive an additional 10% off your purchases that day.
Sorry, just grabbing a tool from your truck and saying, "I'm a carpenter" won't cut it - you gotta put in some effort.

Costumed children or pets are welcome! Our apologies to Octomom, Jon & Kate, & anyone else with a truckload of cute kids, but each household gets only one discount per day. Discount cannot be applied to items from Alco, Nature Neutral, Rox Produx, or Treincarnation.

A nifty way to repurpose doors
So doors are on sale, but you don't think you need a door right now. Well...maybe you need a swanky outdoor bar like this one, from the "Confessions of a Curbshopaholic" blog!

 We won!!!!
Thanks to you,
our fabulous Forklift Fans,
we now hold bragging rights to the title
Best Hardware /DIY Store
of 2010
We are SO grateful to all the members of the Forklift community that went online to vote. This is a big honor, and wonderful publicity for our cause. In fact, we've already received several donations from folks who read our profile in the Express! Check out the article here. |
It's that time of year again...
 | A floating garbage patch | I was in the mall the other day, and found myself drawn to the piles of stocking stuffers that were ALREADY set out. A voice whispered, "Hey, look at the attractive displays of plastic junk! Wow, here are some designer labels made in sweatshops! Ooh, there's a poorly-made toy covered in lead paint!" Down in my wallet, my credit cards groaned.
But what else can you do? After all, your aunt is going to expect something in return for that dumb "travel chess set" she's giving you.
 | Dried orange slice ornament | Well, Community Forklift is here for you! We're gonna help you knock out that holiday list in a way that makes you feel good, not guilty. Here's what we recommend:
1) Check out these fantastic ideas for simplifying the holidays. From gift swaps to earth-friendly decorating, the Center for a New American Dream has tips for celebrating the holidays with more joy and less stuff.
2) Visit our Green Gift Extravaganza! From Oct. 30th through Dec. 24th at Community Forklift, find beautiful presents from crafters, artisans, jewelers, and woodworkers. These gifts are made from reclaimed materials, are related to home improvement, or are made by local artists or Fair Trade co-ops. In addition, an artist will visit each weekend to explain and demonstrate their work - so check the calendar on our website regularly! (If you are a musician or artist, and you're curious about playing or selling your work here, please contact Ruthie as soon as possible)
Green Gift Extravaganza Exhibitor Schedule: Oct. 30 & 31: The Crafty Campbells

11am - 6pm: John and Michelle Campbell have been home renovators for over twenty years, and have been Forklift Fans from the beginning. They are experts at creative reuse, and will be happy to tell you how they make useful items like laptop stands, planters, and serving bowls out of junk mail, concrete, salvaged paint, and reclaimed wood. (Michelle is also a regular volunteer, and we are grateful to have her help coordinating the Green Gift Extravaganza). 11am-6pm: What began as an idea during a Hyattsville home remodeling has developed into one-of-a-kind handcrafted designs on metal light switch and outlet plates. Daryll Harris will be here to talk about how he uses contrasting colors, assorted applications, and finishes to create outstanding abstract geometric colors - enhancing surfaces and areas formerly ignored in decorating schemes.
November 13: IngeNEWityWORKs
Timothy DeVenney, a DC-based glass artisan, practices a form of folk art craftsmanship. His handcrafted, artisanal glass art encompasses a combination of selected elements. Using scraps from other artists and a glass school, Tim makes small mosaics and kiln-fused glass pieces including wall art, functional household objects, refrigerator magnets, bottle stoppers, and jewelry. He also uses granite scraps from the Forklift for the base of his tealight candle holders (If you miss his visit, you can contact him at [email protected] or 202-316-2956).November 20th To be announced November 26-28Mark your calendar, because we've got party plans in the works. We're thinking about craft-making activities, a potluck, tree-trimming, fun for the kiddies, and live music. Now doesn't that sound better than fighting Black Friday crowds at the chain stores? Send us your ideas, sign your band up to play, and look out for more details in our mid-month update! |
