and the Green Power Coalition!
7-9 pm program
(Even if you can't stay the entire evening, please stop by to lend your support).
Location: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, 4371 Parliament Place, Lanham MD 20706
The Prince George's Green Power Coalition is holding a briefing for all candidates running for countywide office. We will share our ideas to improve the environment and economy in Prince George's County and to secure environmental justice for all of our residents. The event is open to the public.
We need to show the candidates just how many citizens care about Community Forklift and a greener economy!
The more folks that show up,
the more impact our words will have.

Upcoming Events
at Community Forklift
(please contact Ruthie if you are knowledgable about going green or home improvement, and you are willing share your skills in August)
Ask the Green Builder
Thurs. July 22, 6:30-7:30 pm
Brian Higgins will discuss improvements to his own house, then tackle questions about your homes. He says, "I have renovated my house to a high performance level by sealing the building envelope, and installing high performance windows, and supplemental solar and biomass heating. While repairing my roof, I also created more space for insulation. These are investments that pay off in lower utility bills, and increased comfort and security for my family. And, of course, I used a lot of reclaimed materials from Community Forklift!"
Brian is the president of Green Home LLC, a local company that aims to be "the smart, affordable choice for energy efficient, healthy, and earth friendly additions, renovations and solar heating."
Ask the Home Energy Expert
Wed. July 28, 6:30-7:30 pm
David Brosch is an energy auditor, trained weatherization practitioner, certified HERS rater, and a certified home performance contractor. He will explain what all these terms mean, share tips for reducing your energy bills, and answer your questions.
David says, "A significant amount of the energy Americans use each year is consumed to condition our homes and operate our appliances and lights. With cheap fuels a thing of the past, it is sensible to make our dwellings more energy efficient in smart, careful ways that also leave them safer, healthier, and more comfortable."
His local business, Green Homes Blue Sky LLC, was formed to offer homeowners energy conservation and green construction services in a time of rising utility prices and a growing concern and awareness of the environment both within the home and on the larger global scale. Their goal is "to make the world a little bit better and your home a lot better."

Events around the region:
Fringe Festival
From July 8-25, there is an explosion of theatre performances all around town. Click here for more info - they have a huge variety of shows, held in all kinds of venues (I think last year, some shows are actually performed in a fountain!). It's a lot of fun, especially if you're not a regular theatre-goer. And guess what - they chose Community Forklift as their official supplier of green building materials!
Prince George's Co.

July 28th:
Mingle with fellow green professionals, try delicious food and drink specials, and enjoy a gorgeous waterfront view. There will be door prizes! 13600 King Charles Terrace Fort Washington, MD 20744-6503

Green Education at
Nationals Stadium!
The Green Building Institute brings green education to the nation's first green sports stadium. Click here for registration info and details.
July 30th: Water is the Next Gold Learn how to conserve this precious resource by "harvesting" rain for use around your home and garden (this is especially important in DC, where we all need to do our part to reduce the stormwater that causes sewer overflows). After the class, enjoy dinner, and watch the Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies.

Picnic by the Train
We know little Forklift Fans love watching trains go by across the street. So, we've got a local children's author to perform, and a DJ & folk singer ready with railroad songs. The tentative date is August 14th, but we'll have more info in the next newsletter. Any local historians, picnic planners, or kids-at-heart able to volunteer?
Tech expert needed: We'd like to set up a podcast or video of some of events. Anyone know how to make that happen?
Bakers and Grillers needed:
At some of these events, we'd like to have a bake sale and/or cookout for the building fund.
Regular Volunteering: Now that we have expanded our summer hours, we need more help than ever in the warehouse. If you can volunteer for a weekly or monthly shift, let us know.
To sign up or make suggestions,
email Ruthie or call
