Lots of News! December 2009

Small bird
You think it looks like I've gone to the birds?  Not really, I just enjoy using bird elements and wanted to share with you.   My Art Fair season is over and, while I am back at home, the real work is just beginning.  This has been such an amazing year filled with exciting opportunities; it makes me crazy - in a good way of course.

Read on as I 'tweet tweet' about my art, new exhibition and workshop venues and what you can expect to see from me in the coming months.

As always, I truly value your support.
Artfully yours,

Mary Beth

Artropolis at Chesterfield Mall celebrates its Grand Opening
on December 11-12.  Check out St. Louis' newest artist space.  Activities planned at the Wood Icing gallery include free
'Avatar Portraits' by photographer Greg Barth and  'Make & Take Ornaments' organized by Mary Beth Shaw and Heather Haymart.  Mary Beth will also be on hand to personalize 'Sound Bite' Plaques at the bargain price of just $18 each.

Wood Icing is a  3000 square foot store for artists, crafters, designers and home decorators that opened November 18th in Chesterfield Mall.

The more I teach the more I love to teach.  The people I meet at various venues and my students (of course!) become family to me as we journey along the artist pathway.  .

Here is a list of upcoming classes, both local and 'on the road.' If you've never gone on an art retreat, you should definitely consider doing it.  I have found that you can immerse yourself in a way that is often not possible when you are on your home turf.  So give it a thought.

January 6th, 11-2 Wood IcingNot Yo' Mama's Paste Paper.  This is a fast and frenzied painting bonanza.  I furnish everything you need.  I will have color stations set up and you rotate through each one, having an opportunity to paint a ton of papers to be used in all your projects.  Never painted before? No worries, this is like finger painting and nearly as messy, so wear old duds.  $40, register by signing up at the Wood Icing store.

January 17th from 1-4.  Not Yo' Mama's Paste Paper (same as above) $40

March 6th from 10-4.  Chesterfield Arts.  Mixed Media Collage.
This is the class everyone has been asking for.  Its the one where I spill it all and teach you how to use your own family photos in a mixed media collage painting.  Never done collage?  Never painted?  No problem, this is a step by step guided process that virtually guarantees success. All you need to bring is B+W Kinkos copies of your family photos.  The more you bring, the more options you will have, so do a variety  sizes from maybe 4-8" each.  If you have other paper things you want to use, like vintage ephemera, feel free to bring it along.  You will learn to collage, add texture and paint and much more.  Create a unique multi-layer collage painting that you'll be proud to show in your home. Please bring a lunch if desired.
$90 (+ $10 material fee), register here on the Chesterfield website.

April 22-23. Valley Ridge Art Studio, Muscoda, WI.
Take Three: The Magic of Color Triads is Revealed

And finally, the class I wish someone would have offered me when I started painting......color management using acrylic paints. You know how all the color books seem geared toward watercolors or oils? How even the most detailed of books never name colors you can find in your local store? How you keep trying and trying, but you end up with mud? Well, I've been there and done that. And now  I've developed a class to share my simple system. To learn more, click on over to the Valley Ridge website and sign up now. Class size is limited.

April 24-25.  Valley Ridge Art Studio, Muscoda, WI.
All on Board for Mixed Media
In this class, you will experiment and play with all the boards and panels that are on the market today. From the incredibly versatile Claybord to Gesso Board to Pastel Board to MDF to Wood panels, we will check out all the rigid substrates.  Work on a number of pieces at one time, trying the same technique across the board (tee hee) to see how they react and how unique effects can be achieved.  To learn more, click over to Valley Ridge Art Studio.  Class size is limited.

I am also teaching at Art Unraveled in Phoenix, AZ.  Their registration opens on Dec. 30th.  Click the link to get details on my two classes and others.  Be sure and register early as classes often sell out.

More classes are added all the time.  The best way to keep up with my teaching schedule is to check my blog as I post updates there.

A way to personalize your art and really make it special

Custom Collage

The easiest way to get to my heart (other than by giving me chocolate), is to book a commission.  There is something about working with family photos that is so magical and intimate; it is a beautiful honor for me and I feel transformed every time I make a custom collage for someone.  You can contact me by email or phone to discuss options.
