NEW QUESTIONS

Question: At this time of year, we usually give a token of thanks to our prescriber's for the holiday season. Some years we give a gift food basket. In the past we gave shoe trees and other practical gifts. We are looking for new ideas that have proven to be moderately priced and memorable.

- Robert S. Schwartz, C. Ped.

Question: I was hoping someone would be able to point me in the right direction. I am a C.Ped. in Oklahoma City and I am looking to purchase a used Amfit Mill. Any feedback would be great as to the whereabouts of one of these machines, or a source dedicated to selling used equipment of the like. Thank you.

- Kevin Jaeger, C.Ped.

Question: For the past decade, rocker bottom shoes have been in and out of vogue. What products are still being used by pedorthists now that they are no longer popular and why have you chosen the styles you are still using?

- PNW Reader

PREVIOUS QUESTIONS WITH RESPONSES

Question: I am a certified therapeutic shoe fitter with ABC. I started out fitting shoes with a DME company for the Medicare Therapeutic shoe program. Now, it seems to me, that a pedorthist certificate is required to fit seniors in the program.

Just wondering what other options or benefits I can explore? At this point it seems ABC is benefiting most from my annual fee and continuing education credits. Any response(s) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

- Certified Shoe Fitter

Response: I want to agree with the certified fitter's comment. I would like to concur with them in saying that ABC does seemed to benefit from my annual fee as well. What is getting us is more regulations, and more work for less reimbursement. I am a Certified Pedorthist and have become quite discourage by all of what I would call special interest groups lobbing to representatives and law makers for more fee's and continuing education, all of which cost me more money. And still, they have not created a clearer picture for distribution and reimbursements. Even this site becomes so much of the same, however at least this site is free. As a side note, I would like to mention that part of my annual fee goes to several magazines that I have never subscribed to. Thank you for your attention in this manner.

- Gil Rice C.Ped., Cfo, CFts

Question: A few weeks ago, I posted a question asking how many people were not planning on attending the PFA Symposium and why. I received many responses via email to my question. Most cited either poor economy or lack of bang for their buck. Many said they had to choose between PFA, Medtrade, AOPA because of limited time and budget. After attending this year's event, being graciously invited by one of the foundational vendors, I both observed and heard many attendees reaction to this year's show.

Being an educator, many former students, and peers stopped to talk to me. Most were in shock that attendance was so low, both on the vendor and general attendee side. Several were disappointed with the quality and relevance of specific presentations. Many others voiced that on a per credit earned basis, attending the symposium was not very economical. Many of the vendors I talked to expressed the same sentiment of disappointment. If you attended, I would like your opinion on the economics and quality of this year's event, as well as plans to attend subsequent events in the future. Is distance education a more viable option?

- Rick E. Sevier - BS Ed. BOCO C. Ped.

Response: How, where, and what people are willing to do for their CEU's is subjective.  Your distance learning courses are indeed an avenue for some of those points, but without vendors and the inter-action of peers.  Like minded peers sharing their modalities or picking up the latest technology can totally pay for the trip, with CEU's as a bonus. It's the membership supporting their own organization as the only one in the world solely dedicated to pedorthics that creates the success of the annual symposium.  In any given year, a rotating third of the membership attend.  Procrastinators skip the first few years of the 5-yr CEU cycle and sweat to get their points in the final years.

"You can't please ALL the people ALL the time".  When PFA is in a bigger or smaller market, some complain about price, distance or whatever.  One person loves a lecture the next hates it because it was too medical or not enough.  One vendor writes lots of biz & the next didn't get enough.  This year someone started a rumor that the on-site registrations accounted for the total attendance, with the truth being more like 800 paid attendees.  Actual face time allocated with vendors was equal to previous years.  The biggest factor to "feeling" less attendance was the convention center forcing at the last minute, meetings in 2 facilities, which dispersed attendees.  All-in-all, myself as an attendee, lecturer & vendor, I enjoyed the symposium.  I got my CEU's, shared with peers, and wrote business.  The 100% participation at the membership meeting was the best ever!  See ya'all in Little Rock.

According to a new research report by RNCOS entitled "China Footwear Market Analysis", the women's footwear seems to be the largest and fastest growing footwear segment in China, owing to the increasing financial independence and rising social status of women. The demand for women footwear is expected to be driven by footwear companies launching new styles and the desire of women to purchase new shoes. Due to rise of economic independence, new styles and products are being launched more frequently in the women's footwear segment than the men's and children's sections. The size of women footwear market in China is likely to account at US$ 8.9 Billion by 2014, growing at a CAGR of around 10% during 2011-2014. Full Text

U.S. Weekend Holiday Sales Raise Hopes

By: Dana Mattioli and Stu Woo

Retailers were cheered that their mix of deep discounts, early openings and website investment produced a strong start to the holiday season. Now, they're plotting more price cuts to keep wary consumers interested for the rest of the key retailing period. Sales on Black Friday-the big shopping day after Thanksgiving-rose 6.6% from a year ago, according to retail-data and consulting firm ShopperTrak, which uses equipment installed in stores to measure traffic. That compares with an anemic 0.3% gain in 2010. Sales for the four days beginning with Thanksgiving grew 16.4%, according to the National Retail Federation, which surveyed 3,826 people. Full Text

Arches and aches

By: Andrea Bailey

Flatfoot or "fallen arches" is a medical condition that affects the arches of the human feet, causing them to fall flat. It occurs in about 20 per cent of the world's population. "Flatfoot, or pes planus, as it is medically called, refers to the loss of the normal arch in either or both feet. In infants it is common for the baby fat between the foot bones to cause the foot arches to fall flat," says Dr Amith Kumar Krishna, an orthopaedic surgeon with Lifeline Healthcare Group, Dubai. "At first, all babies' feet look flat, because the arch hasn't formed yet. Arches should form by the time your child is 3 years of age and develop by the time he or she is 7 or 10 years old." DIABETES

By: Lindsey Konkel

People who live in areas with high levels of traffic-related air pollution may face a slightly increased risk of developing diabetes, Danish researchers conclude in a new study. They found that people living in urban areas with high levels of nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant found in traffic exhaust, were four percent more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than people living in neighborhoods with cleaner air. Healthier people seemed to be in greater peril from the influence of air pollution, with diabetes risk jumping by 10 percent in physically active people and 12 percent in non-smokers. Full Text

When Kansas University journalism professor Teresa Trumbly Lamsam goes to her childhood home in Oklahoma, she takes sacks of groceries with her. She knows she won't be able to buy the kind of healthy food she wants on the American Indian reservation where she is from. Health experts say the lack of food stores on reservations is one factor contributing to the soaring Native American diabetes rate. But lack of food options on reservations is not something you'll often read about, and that's something Lamsam wants to change. Full Text

Hidden Diabetes Threat

A new study reveals yet another possible health risk for people with diabetes.
Researchers looked at colonoscopy results from more than 500 people. A colonoscopy is a test that allows doctors to check the colon for cancers or other growths. Half of the participants in the study had diabetes, and half did not. They were about 65 years old, on average. People with diabetes were more likely to have at least one precancerous growth called an adenoma in their colon compared to people without diabetes. Adenomas can eventually turn into cancer. Whether you're training for a marathon or just toning your body into shape, inadequate foot care can leave you nursing a painful bone at your heel. Here's how to steer clear of it. Not to take away from the new found resolve to get back into shape and jog your way to your ideal body weight, taking a little care of not over-exerting your body can save you a world of pain. Commonly ignored, an aching foot is often dismissed as the body's way of telling you that you've done your time on the tracks. But if the pain is chronic, specifically located at the base of your heel and is extra sensitive in the mornings, maybe it's time for a closer inspection. According to Dr Pradeep Bhonsle, HOD of Orthopedics and an arthritis and joint replacement surgeon at KEM hospital, the calcaneous spur is as common as a broken bone in the OPD department. Here are his tips on identifying the spur and easing your way out of it. Full Text

Last year, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) convened a panel of 13 researchers with expertise in cancer, fitness, obesity and exercise training to study the effects of exercise and physical activity for cancer patients. The panel's conclusion? Exercise can have impressive physical benefits for people who are undergoing cancer treatments. It can reduce nausea and pain, preserve bone density, increase appetite and improve circulation. Exercise can also increase cancer patients' self-esteem, lower the risk of anxiety and depression, and improve overall quality of life. Other peer-reviewed research has shown that exercise can offer substantial health benefits to cancer patients. Full Text

BECOMING CERTIFIED IN PEDORTHICScped
Pedorthics is a professional field covering the design, manufacture, modification and/or fit of footwear. Pedorthics encompasses shoes, orthoses and foot devices that prevent or alleviate foot problems caused by disease, overuse, injury or congenital defect. Certified Pedorthists work with patients and their footwear to conform to a doctor's footwear prescription as part of the patient's treatment

To earn certification in Pedorthics, you must take a pre-determined number of course hours in pedorthics and pass a certifying examination overseen by either The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics® or Board for Certification/Accreditation, Int'l.  Both the ABC and BOC are independent certification bodies that set standards for the profession and offer certifications that are recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
