Question: As a Florida Licensed Pedorthist, we need 22 hours of CEU's every 2 years. I can't go to our state symposium. I need to quickly and inexpensively accumulate 15-20 CEUs. Does anyone know where (on-line) to get free or low cost CEU's? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Question: I would be interested in obtaining more information and a source for Bioputty (regarding Yosef Nathan's posting on use of Biofoam for casting). Comment: Hello, I'm Jeffrey S. Rich, C. Ped. and the inventor or BioputtyTM. Ten years ago I applied for a patent and trademark for Bioputty. I received the trademark but am still having issues with the patent office. In the past I have sold a few dozen of the casting boxes. Other times I have given the formula to a few of my colleagues that teach at Masterfit University. The Biopoutty works much like a squish foam box but yields a 3 dimension imprint much like a slipper cast. If anyone would like a sample of the putty email me at drbalance@msn.com.
Question: Does anyone bill insurance companies and get paid for "computer analysis" or "gait analysis?" I have the tekscan system, which cost me money, and it does take time to run patients through it. Many orthotists do not have this system. Shouldn't we get paid for it? Blue Cross recently lowered our reimbursement for orthotics by 33%. No warning or nothing. And there is nothing we can do if we want to stay in network. At the same time, they raised my health insurance premiums by 30% last year. Any info will be helpful.

Response: The payment for "L" and "A" codes includes assessment, measurement, fabrication, fitting, and delivery. How you perform those functions is up to you. Just as there is no extra payment for the extra cost of a CAD CAM system, there is none for computer assisted "analysis" of gait and pressure issues.

| Texas Seniors Get Access to New Therapy to Heal Difficult Chronic Ulcers
Soluble Systems, LLC announced today that Trailblazer Health Enterprises, the Medicare Part A & Part B Contractor (A/B MAC) for Jurisdiction 4 (J4) has decided to provide coverage for TheraSkin in the treatment of poorly healing diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers.
This is good news for the three million Medicare-eligible Texans and very good news indeed for the estimated 27% who have diabetes and are likely to develop diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers. These ulcers are often extremely difficult to heal and, when all else fails, are involved in nearly two-thirds of all non-traumatic lower limb amputations each year. Full Text

Wound Treating Stem Cell Gel for Patients with Diabetic Foot Ulcers
A recent Phase II clinical trial of a wound healing stem cell gel found that the product promoted healing in 73% of patients with diabetic foot ulcers, compared to 46% treated with a placebo.
The gel, DSC127, is an analog of a naturally occurring peptide, Angiotensin. It has been shown to increase keratinocyte proliferation, increase extracellular matrix production, and increase vascularization.
Patients participating in the double-blind trial received treatment with either a stonger dose of DSC127 (.03%), a weaker dose (.01%), or a placebo. According to the results, compiled by the manufacturer Derma Sciences Inc, DSC127's favorable results were more pronounced at 24 weeks of use than at 12 weeks, when compared with the placebo. | Runners World: Plantar Fasciitis
About 15% of all running injuries strike the foot - with each step, our feet absorb a force several times our body weight.
Plantar fasciitis, small tears or inflammation of the tendons and ligaments that run from your heel to your toes, is usually the top foot complaint among runners. The pain, which typically feels like a dull ache or bruise along your arch or on the bottom of your heel, is usually worse first thing in the morning.
Who's at risk?
Runners with very high or very low arches are vulnerable. Both foot types cause the plantar fascia to be stretched away from the heel bone.
Other causes are extreme pronation (foot rolls inward excessively) or supination (foot rolls outward excessively) and increasing your mileage too quickly.
Long periods of standing, especially on hard floors without supportive footwear, may exacerbate the problem.
Tight hip flexors, weak core muscles and a history of lower back pain can also contribute.
Back issues and core weakness can lead to subtle changes in your stride that you'll feel in the feet. Full Text

The Shoe Service Institute of America, in partnership with CFS Allied Health Education, would like to announce a C.Ped. course to be presented prior to this summers SSIA convention in St Petersburg, FL. The American Board for Certification has approved a total of 14 CEUs that can be earned for the low cost of $395 during this two-day course.

This class explores various components used in observational gait analysis
by using live demonstrations of both normal and pathological gait.
