Question: How are other pedorthic retail business owners handling special orders of shoes that they do not normally carry? Do you require a full payment up front with no refund? Or establish before ordering that special order shoes can be exchanged at no additional cost if there is a fitting issue? When a new customer comes in looking for a specific style from a brand we carry, we want to be customer friendly, but know there is an inherent risk in ordering in shoes that we have no fitting inventory or history fitting. What policy works to be fair to store and customer on special orders?

Response: For the store I'm at, we have about 20 brands of shoes. For many of these brands, vendors will return shoes for free (you only pay to ship them back). All special orders are paid for up front, and if there are fit problems upon arrival we will exchange at no cost. If they want their money back, we keep 10 dollars of their return for shipping. We actually lose money when they DO return the shoes, but this is infrequent. Most of our customers are happy to order shoes when they can specifically pick out style and color, and they come back for multiple pairs. Any shoes we find we are frequently special ordering, we'll likely stock eventually.

Question: I recently posted a query regarding the increase in neutral cushion for runners I've seen that have softer lateral outsoles and firmer medial outsoles. I got a response outlining how to make inserts for that foot type. I was hoping that someone in the know would respond and address that issue. I've seen it in some Asic's, New Balance and to a lesser degree some of the other major brands. Surely someone that is a member of this newswire is tied in to one of the companies? It's a bit tough seeing a patient with even subtle cavus crushing the lateral outsole of a very expensive shoe with little to no miles. Perhaps there is something I don't grasp, but having a shoe that encourages varus tipping of the foot and increases varus thrust of the knee doesn't seem like sound biomechanical theory.

NRF Raises Holiday Sales Forecast to 3.3%

Keeping A-Foot of Diabetes

When it comes to monitoring diabetes, most people think it's all about the fingers. But one St. Albert woman wants diabetics to think about their toes - and the rest of their feet - as well.

Shauna Desjarlais lost her husband, Roy, to complications from diabetes in 2009. Most of those complications had to do with diabetic ulcers on his feet, which she said he stubbornly ignored until it was too late and underwent four amputation surgeries. "They ended up cutting off his heel, two of his toes and part of his right foot in an attempt to save him; that was in February [2009]. That didn't work," she said.

"In March, it was both legs below the knees; that didn't work. In April, it was both legs mid-thigh; that didn't work. And he died in May.  It was an ugly way to die, all from some sores on his feet. It was a hard way to learn how severe diabetic foot ulcers are."

Dr. Mario Turanovic is the president of the Alberta Podiatry Association (APA). He said that diabetes has such a big impact on patients' feet because it affects the smaller blood vessels in the body.  Full Text

Take The Stress (Fracture) Out of Your Workout This New Year's

The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) has a message for previously sedentary Americans who will head to the gym this New Year:  take it slow.  Stress fractures are the most common overuse injuries of the foot and ankle. They occur with a rapid increase in physical activity (too much too quickly). Stress fractures result from a series of loading and unloading cycles that cause damage to the bone.  If these forces continue and the bone is not able to repair itself fast enough, a fracture may occur.

F. Ray Nickel, MD, an active AOFAS member who practices in Ventura, California and treats many patients with sports related foot and ankle injuries offers the following advice, "The repetitive loading which produces these fractures is similar to repetitive bending of a paper clip which eventually breaks.  Once broken, it can have a major impact on your workout program and life in general."  The loading can be due to many factors, but Dr. Nickel tells his patients, "The factors over which we have some control are distance, shoe wear, surfaces and flexibility.  Don't increase the distance or activity more than 10% per week."
