NEW QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS

Question: I have a patient with bi-lateral TMA. He requested a PWM "Hercules" boot because of his farm work. I am thinking I would add carbon fiber plates inside the boot under the toe-filler for added stiffness. Would you say the carbon plate is an acceptable option instead of adding a full-length steel shank?

Thank you!

- CPed2005

Question: As a post-certification educator, I am very interested in what PNW readers think of the current industry offerings as far as CME courses/opportunities go.  What do you like?  What don't you like?  What is missing?

Thanks!

- Erick Janisse, C. Ped., CO

Question: No, really? Just received the latest PFA Magazine. There is an advertisement for High Heel orthotics on page 17. Is this for real? I cannot see how any orthotic would do any good in any high heel (especially in those "exquisite spikes" shown). How can any orthotic give any support in a high heel shoe. Didn't "Oprah" have something like this on one of her shows? This brings me to the following question: should there be advertising for very questionable products in a health related magazine? As a CPed I see myself as a footwear specialist who works toward long-term maintenance of healthy feet and the prevention not the promotion of foot damage. What is your take on this?

PREVIOUS QUESTIONS WITHOUT RESPONSES

Question: We have had several requests as of late for pedorthic related products that will run on an I-Phone/Pod/Pad or Blackberry. These are generally Pre-cert or CE in nature. We have several CE apps that will run in that environment but are always looking for ideas to develop more. My first question is how many practitioners out there are utilizing current technology (iPhone/Pad/Pod, Blackberry, etc) in their work environment, and secondly, who would if they only knew how to better utilize this technology?

Amazon Strengthens Fashion Focus

By Lezette Engelbrecht

Online retailer Amazon has refreshed its online clothing and shoe business with a focus on high-end style as it vies with rivals such as Yoox and Net-A-Porter in the expanding online fashion market, reports Financial Times.

US online sales of clothing, shoes and accessories grew 17% last year to $27 billion, according to Forrester Research. Growth is expected to outstrip other categories such as electronics over the next five years.

Amazon is recruiting software engineers who it says will build "great new features to change the way people shop for clothing" with the retailer, as well as graphic designers with experience of high-end fashion retailing. Full Text

Feet Bear the Strain of Extra Weight

By Kim Painter

Too much weight is bad for your heart, your lungs, your knees and even your brain. But you'll have to gaze downward to find the place where you literally may feel extra pounds first: your feet.

"The foot is an amazingly well-developed machine," but it can't always stand up to the extra pounds Americans carry, says Keith Wapner, a surgeon in Philadelphia and president-elect of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. Full Text

Sales of Women's Fashion Footwear Surging

The market for women's fashion footwear has rebounded sharply in recent months, although shoppers are turning to off-price retailers with the most frequency, according to research firm NPD Group Inc.  Sales of women's fashion shoes were up 24% in the three months ended in April. Men's and children's fashion footwear were also posting positive results, up 7.5% and 1.7% respectively.

It also said off-price retailers saw the biggest increase in sales from a year earlier, at 27%, followed by shoe stores with 24% growth. All the store channels NPD tracks posted growth in the three-month period after all but off-price retailers declined the year earlier. Full Text

NRF CEO Backs 2010 U.S. Retail Sales View

U.S. retail sales are on track to rise 2.5 percent this year despite lingering unemployment and economic uncertainty, the head of the nation's premier retail trade group said on Monday.

In January, the National Retail Federation had forecast a 2.5 percent rise for 2010, as the industry comes out of its worst slump in decades. Speaking at the Reuters Consumer and Retail Summit in New York, NRF Chief Executive Matthew Shay affirmed that forecast.

"Based on what we saw in the first four or five months of the year, I think we're right on track," said Shay, who has been in the job for five months. "We feel confident that 2.5 percent is the right number." Full Text

Payless Owner Bullish on Back-to-School

Collective Brands Inc is optimistic that back-to-school sales in the United States will be stronger this year than in 2009, especially in higher-end brands, its chief executive said. Speaking by telephone to the Reuters Consumer and Retail Summit in New York, CEO Matthew Rubel said he was optimistic about the upcoming back-to-school season and that sales should be higher as some consumers open their wallets a bit wider.

"I believe it will be up," Rubel said. "I believe it will be substantially up on the premium end and up a little bit on the mainstream end."

Coloplast and The World Diabetes Foundation Prevent Amputations in India

Coloplast's donation programme Access to Healthcare just signed a contract with the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) about a new healthcare project in India. The project aims to improve the treatment of diabetic wounds.

"Every single day, 110 Indians have a foot or part of their leg amputated due to diabetic foot ulcers, and an unknown number die before they are even diagnosed," says Per Ole Nielsen, Project Manager of Access to Healthcare.  Training in diagnosis and care of diabetic wounds is essential to reduce this figure. Gaining Weight Later in Life Ups Diabetes Risk

By Serena Gordon

Gaining weight when you're over age 50, especially around the waist, significantly increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, new research suggests. Compared to people whose weight remained stable after age 50, people who gained the most weight after 50 (more than 20 pounds) nearly tripled their risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to the study in the June 23/30 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"People over the age of 65 are at the highest risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and they have the highest rates of morbidity and mortality from heart disease, which can be related to diabetes. This is really a key clinic and public health issue," said study author Mary Biggs, a research scientist at the University of Washington in Seattle. Full Text

Diabetes Epidemic Growing

The United States saw a 136 percent increase in the number of people with diabetes between 1980 and 2007. Now, nearly 24 million Americans have the disease.  Dr. Andrew Sussman, Associate Chief Medical Officer of CVS Caremark discussed the continuing epidemic with co-anchor Harry Smith on "The Early Show" Tuesday, outlining the risk factors of getting it and certain mile-markers to watch out for as you get older.

Although diabetes is avoidable, certain factors play a large role in whether a person is more likely to get it. Family history is very important, as well as age. People 55 and older are much more susceptible to diabetes, and certain populations, such as African-Americans or Hispanic-Americans, are at greater risk. Full Text

Join A Growing Service Profession: Pedorthics

Pedorthics is a professional field covering the design, manufacture, modification and/or fit of footwear.
