LAST WEEK'S EDITOR'S CHALLENGE
Archaeologists
Discover 5,500-Year-Old Shoe (AP)
About 5,500 years ago someone in the mountains of Armenia put his best foot
forward in what is now the oldest leather shoe ever found. It will never
be confused with a modern shoe, but the well-preserved footwear was made of a
single piece of leather, laced up the front and back, researchers reported
Wednesday in PLoS One, a journal of The Public Library of Science. Worn and shaped
by the wearer's right foot, the shoe was found in a cave along with other
evidence of human occupation. The shoe had been stuffed with grass, which dated
to the same time as the leather of the shoe - between 5,637 and 5,387 years
ago. Full

Editor's Challenge: Win Free Footwear: If this shoe were to be
found in retail stores today, what footwear brand would it fall under and what
would the price point be?
PNW invited all readers to submit their responses to enter to win a free pair of Aetrex footwear!
RESPONSES
Answer: Well now...I'd have to say.....EARTH SHOES!
As far as the retail price point, I would like to think it should sell @ $70,
but with a cost @ $23.50 so we could get a decent margin out of it!
Ha! - Britton Bonsall, C. Ped., Foot Solutions - Morgan
Hill, CA Answer: Actually a sales
rep sold us a very similar shoe when we first got into retail. We still
have some inventory that we are expecting that will be around for about the
same length of time as this Armenian "brand." Answer: As far as category
of shoe, it is obvious. It has to be in the category of toning shoes
like all other shoes being marketed now. The 3 rockers of the foot
inside this construction of shoe are the rockers, therefore this shoe will
make everyone's butt get smaller with routine use.
Get Sandra Bullock a pair to wear and get her to say that they helped
her butt be firmer, and stores will not be able to keep them in
stock. - John Mishasek, BOC Pedorthist, C. Ped Answer: Given the lacing system, it's an obvious rip-off of the Aetrex
Gramercy G-300 shoe. I would price it at least $10,000 if it's going to last
over 5,000 years. If there are no takers, I would mark it down to $150. - Cam White, CFts, Total Relief Footwear,
Austin, TX Answer: WOW...A really GOOD question!!!! It probably would be a Birkenstock and would
retail for $1500 to $2000. We
carry Aetrex and LOVE them too!!!! Happy Selling. - Ron E. Brandich,
owner, Arthur's Shoe Tree,Sandusky,
Oh. 44870
And the Winner is...Britton Bonsall. Congratulations!!
NEW QUESTIONS
Question: We have had
several requests as of late for pedorthic related products that will run on an
I-Phone/Pod/Pad or Blackberry. These are generally Pre-cert or CE in nature. We
have several CE apps that will run in that environment but are always looking
for ideas to develop more. My first question is how many practitioners out
there are utilizing current technology (iPhone/Pad/Pod, Blackberry, etc) in
their work environment, and secondly, who would if they only knew how to better
utilize this technology? -
Rick E. Sevier - BOCO C. Ped. CFS Allied Health Education
PREVIOUS QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS WITH RESPONSES
Question: With summer
sandal season here, we are modifying our sandals that do not
have a removable footbeds to have a higher arch. We have been using
white felt scaphoid pads. Is there any source for felt scaphoid pads that
are not white (black, brown) or is there an easy way to dye felt to other
colors? Or is there an alternative way to increase arch support in
sandals without removable foot beds that does not use felt? - John Mishasek, BOC Pedorthist, C. Ped. Response: We are able to mill custom D pads and or scaphoid
pads that are used very effectively within flip flop and other sandals
that do not have a removable foot bed. We augment this ability to include sling
back and other high-heeled shoes and dance footwear. We use a variety of
materials, but most are ordered in a black crepe material. When looking at various colours they can be
covered in different-coloured leather. Please feel free to contact me at Prothotics 1-800-667-3679 - Brent Konantz, Ortho. ,RMT LCSP C PED (C) Response: You could cover felt,
foam, or rubber scaphoid or metatarsal pads with a thin layer of matching
leather before affixing it to the sandal. Be sure to skive the edges of the
leather so that the modification lies smoothly. I use this technique when
applying rubber wedges to the heels of my sister's sandals. - Sarah Goldberg, C. Ped. Response: I don't know
that I've invented this technique, but what I've been doing for years is to use
the blue poron scaphoid pads and cover them with the appropriate colored
leather. I use contact cement to adhere the leather to the pad, and to
attach the pad to the shoe. It's worked well for me. I hope that
helps. - Beth Jensen, C. Ped., Denver, CO
Question: I no longer take assignment on diabetic shoes
or inserts. If someone purchases from me and asks me to send in to
Medicare non-assigned so he can get reimbursed, who is responsible to get all
the paperwork and save it in a chart? Should I just send in claim
without GY modifier and see what Medicare does? (I am sure they will kick
it back out.) Should I give him the therapeutic shoe form to be filled out by a
certifying doctor and also the RX and let him do the work? If Medicare
isn't paying me but rather the patient, then I assume they can't come after me
for a refund. Or will they simply not do an audit on a non-assign claim? - Scott Torppey, CO, C. Ped. Previous Response: Scott! Read the rules.
Whether it is assigned or not assigned, if you don't know this you should not
be filing at all until you read the rules and regulations for providers and
understand it. You are still the provider and are responsible for all paperwork
being in your file. You are responsible to make sure the doctor is on the correct
list so they qualify to sign the forms, and on and on and on it goes. You can
also be forced to reimburse the patient unless you have them sign a form
stating they may not be paid or be fined thousands of dollars. The only way not
to be responsible is to opt out as a provider at all. Medicare agents will tell
you to let the patient send it in, once you opt out, but they still will not
pay it even when the agents said they would. I stopped filing Medicare at all in September 2009.
I never took assignment unless it was a Medicare/Medicaid patient and it was
still too much work for too little reimbursement. Even when it was to help the
patient get money back, If it is refused you have to do all the work over again
until the claim is paid and you cannot charge the patient for the time spent,
which could be hours and hours of phone calls and paperwork depending upon
Medicare. So as a provider you continue to loose profit margin. The nightmare
on old claims still hasn't ended 9 months later. Unfortunately I do not see much future for the
pedorthic Industry. ABC has done us no favors. Many of the people I talked with
at the PFA Symposium last fall are struggling with Medicare and the Industry as
well. Many people have stopped Medicare including many doctors. Where is
Healthcare going for the Provider? My opinion: not a very good direction. - Lee A.
Hunter, C. Ped. New Response: Mr. Hunger, As a C. Ped. since 1993 and with 40
years experience in the shoe business behind me, I must take exception to your
comments about our profession. Every week I travel the country working with C.
Peds who are successful retailers and whose business is not contingent upon
Medicare to make a living, and who find great satisfaction in being an integral
part of a healthcare alliance helping people continue their lives without foot
pain and avoiding amputations. Pedorthics is a great field with a great
future. Perhaps you just need to change
your business model. - Andrew Green,C. Ped., Executive Sales Director, Aetrex Worldwide |

Men's
Footwear Treads in the Comfort Zone
By Samantha
Critchell
When it comes to men and their
shoes, it's hard to get past the comfort zone.
"Men are all about comfort and
neutrality. They certainly are not going to suffer because they think a shoe is
stylish," says Marcia Kilgore, founder of the FitFlop brand. "Women
are willing to 'break it in' but that would never cross a man's mind."
They also fall into a rut of buying
only what they know.
"Men like to have the same
thing over and over again. They buy a brand and style of shoes, and five years
later come in to a store and say, 'Do you still have these?' " says Duckie
cofounder Steven Cox. Full

MarketWatch Diabetes
and the Feet
By Dr. Olubiyi Adesina
Of all long-term complications of diabetes,
the most preventable are foot problems. These foot problems mostly arise from
how people with diabetes care for themselves and from how they are cared for by
their physicians. People with diabetes have a high risk of developing ulcers
(wounds) on their feet. If these wounds are not properly cared for, they
inexorably lead to gangrene and subsequent amputation (cutting off) of such
feet. People with diabetes can lose the ability to feel any sensation on their
feet, and as such they may have a wound from stepping on sharp objects or from
blisters that form on the feet from wearing inappropriately sized shoes without
their knowing that such ulcers are on their feet until they are told so.
Foot ulcers in people with diabetes are only second to road traffic
accidents as a cause of amputation of the foot. Foot ulcers are common in
people with diabetes; especially those with diabetes that is not well
controlled who thus have a reduced wound healing ability. Full

'Toning'
Shoes Gain Traction
by Matt Townsend
Eric Sprunk, vice-president for
global product and merchandising at Nike, ended a speech to investors on
innovation with a jab at the so-called toning shoes driving sales increases for
competitors. "Wouldn't it be great if we could make a pair of shoes that
made your butt smaller, made my gut look smaller, make your muscles look a
little bit bigger, just by putting them on and...walking in them?" Sprunk
asked his audience on May 5. "Nobody can do that. I was just
teasing."
The big market share gains that
adidas's Reebok unit and Skechers USA are getting thanks to their toning shoe
lines are no joke, however. Full

BECOMING A CERTIFIED PEDORTHIST | |
Join A Growing Service Profession: Pedorthics
Pedorthics is a professional field covering the
design, manufacture, modification and/or fit of footwear. Pedorthics encompasses
shoes, orthoses and foot devices that prevent or alleviate foot problems caused
by disease, overuse, injury or congenital defect. Certified Pedorthists work
with patients and their footwear to conform to a doctor's footwear prescription
as part of the patient's treatment
To become a certified pedorthist, you must take a
pre-determined number of course hours in pedorthics and pass a certifying
examination overseen by either The American Board for Certification in
Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics® or Board for
Certification/Accreditation, Int'l. Both the ABC and BOC are independent
certification bodies that set standards for the profession and offer
certifications that are recognized by the National Commission for Certifying
