Wound Healing Center Offers Tips for Diabetics

Sixty percent of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in the U.S. are diabetes-related. April is National Foot Health Awareness Month and the perfect time for the nearly 24 million Americans living with diabetes to stand up for their feet.

"Foot inspections and proper foot care should be as much a part of a diabetic's daily routine as checking blood sugar levels," recommends Dr. Parakkat Krishnan, MD, Medical Director of the Wound Healing Center at Marion Regional Healthcare System, who treats many patients who have difficulty healing due to complications from diabetes. 

"Each year, one in 20 people with diabetes will develop a foot ulcer and the rate of amputation for people with diabetes is 10 times higher than in the general population," Dr. Krishnan said. "In fact, 60 percent of lower limb amputations that are not caused by trauma such as accidents and car crashes are diabetes related." Full Text

The Jacksons are the founders of the Camj Style Shoes Just for Me company. The "j" is silent in Camj, which stands for Catherine Ann McClure Jackson, Ann Jackson's full name. The couple set up their company in December after working for several diabetic-supply companies. Their company has two divisions, one that furnishes a range of diabetic supplies and one that customizes shoes for diabetics, as well as teachers, barbers and others who are on their feet a lot. Lace Up Your RFID, It's Time to Race

In this year's Boston Marathon, runners wore shoelace RFID tags to track their time from start to finish, according to a PC World report. Just days before the race began, runners picked up a numbered bib and an RFID tag that could be laced into their shoes. Along the 26.2 mile race there were 11 mats which collected information and then relayed it to a variety of outlets.

Anyone could sign up on the Boston Athletic Association's web site to follow a specific runner's progress. Friends and family members could sign up to receive text message alerts, which were sent out at four points throughout the race. Full Text

Pedorthic Pre-Certification Training Course July 26th - August 8th, 2010

In cooperation with the ABC and BOC requirements, the Eneslow Pedorthic Institute (EPI) is offering a three-level competency training course for aspiring CPEDS. To provide maximum benefit in a minimum of time, a portion of the level one curriculum will be administered through a distance learning program that includes required readings, and testing of all mandatory topics. Upon passing the level one test, students will attend the remainder of the pedorthic pre-certification course at the Eneslow Pedorthic Institute. The course includes the required tests for competency to sit for the ABC or BOC exams.

Upon completing the course and successfully passing the competency tests, and fulfilling the 1,000 hour "Clinical practice Requirement" students are eligible to sit for the ABC or BOC exam to earn their Pedorthic Certification (CPED or BOC Pedorthist).
