NEW QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS

Comment: Here is a quick tip I love to show my students. As Pedorthists, we are often called upon to do shoe modifications that require removal of the existing outsole. Most people either use a knife or resort to the band saw. An easier way is to utilize a cast saw to split the sole. Some shops have one of these sitting around, but most do not. A great alternative is to visit your local hardware store and purchase a Dremel MultiMax ($100 as opposed to $600-$1200 for a cast saw). This tool uses a reciprocating motion rather than a spinning blade, which makes the chore both quick and safe. The really cool thing is that it can be used as a cast saw as well.

PREVIOUS QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS WITHOUT RESPONSES

Question: I was wondering if anybody would know where we could find a used shoe finisher within the state of Washington or Oregon.  We are looking for something basic with a 4"-5" wheel on one side and 1.5"-2" on the other.  A used 5 in 1 or similar trimmer would be nice, too.  Thanks for your help.

Toning Shoes May Find Untapped Market in Men, NPD Data Find

by Matt Townsend

Skechers USA Inc. and other makers of toning and shaping shoes may be poised for faster sales growth if they can figure out how to lure men. Volume sales of walking shoes rose 15.3 percent in 2009 from a year earlier, to $712 million from $617 million, driven by an eightfold jump in sales of the new footwear from companies such as Skechers and Reebok International Ltd., a unit of Adidas AG, research firm NPD Group Inc. reported yesterday. The shoes are marketed as toning and shaping muscles when worn during everyday activities.

The gain came in a category with limited choices for men, whose footwear accounts for 50 percent of overall revenue in the athletic-shoe market, NPD said. That compares with 30 percent for women's shoes and 20 percent for children's footwear, the data show. Full Text

5 Ways You Can Improve Cash Flow With Your Invoices

Cash flow can be a crucial issue for small businesses: until your clients pay you, you may not be able to turn around and pay your own bills. That can make improving your cash flow a priority. But what are effective ways to go about speeding up the turnaround for your clients? After all, most clients tend to pay on a net-30 basis - no number of phone calls or nagging will change that number. But a few tweaks to your invoices can often make a difference in how soon they get paid.

1. Discuss invoices in advance.

The more that your clients know exactly what to expect when they receive your invoice, the faster you're likely to get payment. With some companies, your invoices aren't even looked at until they're due - which means that any problems that come up will be handled after your invoice has already sat on your client's desk for a month. Even a chat with your client before you send out your invoice can help eliminate that wait. Full Text

DIABETESdiab

Diabetics, Put Your Best Foot Forward

By Dr. Peter Rissing, Medical Director Walton Wound Care and Infusion Center

For diabetics, caring for your feet may be almost as important as watching what you eat.

When you have diabetes, you are at higher risk for developing chronic wounds and infections in your feet due to two related conditions: neuropathy and narrowing of the arteries. Diabetic neuropathy is damage to the nerves of your feet that reduces your sensation of pain; narrowing of the arteries reduces blood flow, making it harder for cuts and sores to heal. When these two conditions are combined, even a minor abrasion or blister can easily develop into a bigger problem: a chronic wound or infection that can take months to heal, and-as a last resort-require amputation.

Prevention Tips
Diabetics can help prevent foot problems by staying vigilant and committing to taking the following precautions:

Inspect feet daily. Check for blisters, cuts, cracks or sores, both on the bottom of the feet and around toes. If you can't see the bottom of your feet, ask a family member to help, or use a mirror. Full Text

Behind the Data: Why Drugs Don't Help Diabetes Patients' Hearts

Doctors at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology in Atlanta on Sunday got some surprising news on their first day of sessions. Researchers presented three studies revealing that some of the most widely prescribed medications to reduce the risk of heart disease in Type 2 diabetes patients appeared not to provide much benefit at all.

People with diabetes are twice as likely as non-diabetics to suffer a heart attack - most diabetes patients die of heart disease - and for years, physicians have used aggressive drug treatments to lower that risk. To that end, the goal has commonly been to lower blood sugar or control blood-sugar spikes after eating, lower triglycerides and reduce blood pressure in diabetes patients to levels closer to those of healthy, non-diabetic individuals. By using medication to treat these factors, which are linked to a higher risk of heart attack and stroke in other patients, doctors assumed they would also be reducing the risk in people with diabetes. Foot Locker Sales Strategy To Focus On Apparel, Running Shoes

By Andria Cheng

At athletic retailer Foot Locker Inc.'s (FL) flagship store on New York's 34th Street, a front window display brings attention to an assortment of running shoes, from Nike to Asics, not the customary basketball gear on which the company has staked its reputation.

Meanwhile, some of its interior walls that had been traditionally reserved for just shoes were converted to feature a complete, color-coordinated apparel and footwear ensemble from head to toe.

It's all part of new Chief Executive Ken Hicks's strategy to increase sales of the New York-based chain of about 3,500 stores by 22% to $6 billion over the next five years and increase the rate of profit growth to 5% during the same period from 1.8% last year in a growth strategy laid out recently.  Full Text
