India: Basistha Pradhan (65) from Angul district got a new lease of life. Thanks to the timely intervention by a team of diatebic specialists who advised him at the right time thus saving his leg from being amputated. Uncontrolled diabetes was virtually ruining his life. A small injury a few months back was the first manifestation of diabetes which was treated locally by doctors as a normal injury.

It was when Pradhan could not recover that he contacted the city-based Kanungo Institute of Diabetes Specialities (KIDS). However, with several sessions of debridgement surgeries, sensitive anti-biotics and intensive insulin therapy his condition improved. Diabetes Study Seeks Clues in Dolphins

Here's a neat dolphin trick that doesn't involve jumping through hoops. While dolphins sleep overnight (with half their brains and one eye at a time) they begin to show signs of the kind of insulin resistance that marks type 2 diabetes in humans. But when they wake up and have their breakfast, they switch back to their normal state.

A research team led by Stephanie Venn-Watson announced the findings at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in San Diego, and said that dolphins' apparent ability to switch insulin resistance on and off could lead to better understanding of the disease in humans. Reebok Addresses El Salvador Sweatshop Allegations

In response to a report from that National Labor Committee that claimed that NFL jerseys were sewn under illegal sweatshop conditions in El Salvador, Reebok issued a statement saying it had conducted its own initial investigation and "believe there are a number of inconsistencies and inaccuracies in the report."

"We have shared the NLC's report with Chi Fung's owners and we will continue our internal investigation," the statement said. "If our internal investigation finds non compliance, we will immediately work with the factory to remediate the problems, facilitate the engagement with relevant stakeholders, and commission independent third parties to verify that the remediation has been effective."

The statement also noted that adidas, its parent, has more than 60 Social and Environmental Affairs (SEA) members, including highly qualified labor and health and safety experts, who regularly monitor its global supply chain and overall working conditions. The company also said it has regularly monitored and reviewed Chi Fung's payroll records and have not found "the serious overtime compensation issues alleged in this report." Full Text
