I recently posted a question looking for suggestions on an easier way for a female employee to cut high durometer materials. I received numerous phone calls from readers with many great suggestions. Comment: I have been in the field of Pedorthics since 1991 and have been Board Certified since 1993. After the last PFA Symposium I refer to myself as a BORED Certified Pedorthist.  The content of the symposium was disappointing to say the least. In my opinion, this has been the case for more than the past decade. Seriously, how many ways can you use a foam crush box, make a diabetic insole or grind a rocker sole? How can a presenter propose that they are an "expert" in biomechanics or that they have developed a new orthotic that is biomechanically superior, and in the same sentence say that a foam impression box was used?  Fore foot to rear foot relationships, first and lesser ray mal-alignments and fore foot equinus are obliterated when using a foam box! It also seems that to be a presenter you have to be part of the 'Good Old Boys Network.' They are the same presenters year after year after year after year.

 

I personally know of people whose presentations were turned down and their educational course is two days long, which is worth as many continuing education points as the entire symposium!

Response: I have to admit that I agree with a lot of what you are saying.I recently moved from a position of employee to owner, and having to be away from my store for 4 days to listen to the same lectures over and over is not worth it.One thing that struck me last year in Grapevine was the type of questions being asked (and I am assuming they were newly Certified Pedorthists) in most sessions.  While I understand the need for those questions by my newly certified colleagues, it is downright depressing for a seasoned Pedorthist.

 

The format really needs to be changed to accommodate both groups.For the more seasoned C.Ped., perhaps send out a survey to find out what issues or problems plague us and are being experienced daily in our practice, and then format portions of the Symposium around those topics with suggestions, solutions and answers.

 

The PFA has my full support.  I do think they work hard on behalf of our group.

Response: In a recent reply to a post by Aaron Anderson (Issue #345), PFA states that their committee that approves content for the annual symposium (COPE) "is in fact comprised of many educators." I looked at the list of members on this committee and there is one member that looks as though they are involved at a professional level with education.  The rest are Pedorthists, just like many of you out there, who have selflessly given of their valuable time to present on various subjects in the past. Maybe what PFA should do is figure out what their definition of "is" is, as well as "who is an educator." I have taught at the university level since 1988 and have a degree in education. I teach pre- and post-certification pedorthics every day.  Many of my Professional Pedorthic Educator peers can easily best my credentials and experience. Yet, when we asked PFA to let the Educators to join ranks with COPE to let us assist with the Symposium content, we were summarily rejected. Why??? In my opinion, you, as a member, need to get involved with the process and start asking hard questions to top people at PFA.

Question: Happy New Year to all!

 

We have had a time with Medicare in the last few months. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problems? In August 09 they changed a few things and if they bothered to tell anyone, I wouldn't know. Now we have to put Lt Rt modifiers along with the KX on A-5500 to let them know it is a pair of shoes. I am still unclear if this is 1 unit or 2. Has anyone heard of a GY modifier to let them know they are not diabetic? We have to get the denial from Medicare for the secondary to pay (sometimes they will), and they want a GY modifier. I would think an L code would tell them that. There I go thinking again! Medicare is sitting on thousands of dollars due to us because of their games. I know this time of year they are out of money so they shake things up and deny every thing they can. I get it; I am out of money, too! The Newswire is the perfect place to post these type of things.

 

On a positive side, J, what if we as a group came together with one basic idea: to advertise Pedorthics? When we do our local advertising, the word "Pedorthic" is prominent, or I see a dark background with "PEDORTHICS?" in white and that is all. Bumper stickers can be cheap and simple, billboards can be expensive, so somewhere in between, or all of the above, could work. This would draw people to search "Pedorthics" on the Internet just to see what it is and find out who we are. Locally we have a car dealer that has five-second commercial spots on TV; they are quick and to the point. I can see "PEDORTHICS?" in this type of format. Anyone out there like these ideas or have their own to share?

Footwear Shines in December at Some Retailers

Footwear was a big winner at several key department stores in December. Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Kohl's were among the majors that reported strength in shoes last month during the busy holiday season.

Sam Poser, an analyst at Sterne Agee, said Ugg had once again been a boon for many stores this season, including Nordstrom. "The week leading into Christmas through today has been gangbusters," said Poser, adding that the shearling boot brand has become a big gift item, and that Ugg also benefited from the cold weather in much of the country.

Across the footwear category, Nordstrom reported strength in women's and juniors' shoes, while Saks singled out women's styles as strong performers. Meanwhile, Kohl's called out the footwear and accessories category in general.  More broadly, retailers appear to have gotten what they wanted out of December - an improvement in sales trends and margins and inventory levels that bode well for their fourth-quarter profits. Brazilian Footwear Congress to Focus on Retail Market & Fashion Trends

The 14th edition of the Brazilian Footwear Congress, to be held just before Couromoda 2010, Sunday, January 17th in São Paulo, comes with a full display of new features in conferences, debates and information. The event, already an established part of the agenda of the Brazilian retailers, will present interesting issues for the retailers, namely the variable remuneration and participation in profits or results.

Gout Rising Among Young Men in Wales

 

Binge drinking has sparked a rash of gout among Welsh men in their 20s, likely leading to chronic ill health, a hospital emergency room consultant says. The disease, characterized by painful inflammation of the joints, especially in the feet and hands, was formerly more common in males in their 50s, due to medicine or rich diets, said accident and emergency consultant Mike McCade of Morriston Hospital in Cwmrhydyceirw, Wales.

 

But "we are seeing it now in men in their mid 20s, often due to alcohol, and it will cause them chronic ill health," he told the South Wales Echo. Full Text

UK: Increase in Diabetes Patients Having Limbs Amputated

 

The increase in amputations has almost doubled over a 10 year period with up to 100 patients a week losing a leg to complications of the disease. The number of people diagnosed with type-two diabetes the type caused by obesity - has increased greatly in the past decade, which could partly explain the findings, according to researchers.

 

But doctors believe that with better care up to 80 per cent of amputations could be avoided. Major amputations, above the ankle joint, have risen by 43 per cent and the average age of those having above-ankle amputations fell from 71 to 69 years, which followed the pattern of more people being diagnosed younger.  Full Text

The conditions were perfect for getting the kids back on their skis for the first time this season. Good snow. Good weather. And there was my 9-year-old, just finishing up his ski lesson with his instructor, Heidi ... and he was in tears? He wasn't hurt, and Heidi was the most amazing instructor you could hope to have working with your child. So what gives?

 

Roll the clock back about four hours to the bustling scene at the rental shop. Dozens of people queued up to get fitted for equipment, hurrying to get in, get out and get on with the day. I was no different. I wanted to get my son fitted and out of there as soon as we could.  The techs at the rental shop measured my son's foot size, pulled some boots, asked him if his toes hit the end of the boot or if there was a little room. Pedorthic Pre-Certification Training Course February 1st - 14th, 2010

 

In cooperation with the ABC requirements, the Eneslow Pedorthic Institute (EPI) is offering a three-level competency training course for aspiring CPEDS. To provide maximum benefit in a minimum of time, a portion of the level one curriculum will be administered through a distance learning program that includes required readings, and testing of all mandatory topics. Upon passing the level one test, students will attend the remainder of the pedorthic pre-certification course at the Eneslow Pedorthic Institute. Pedorthic Pre-Certification Training Course February 1st - 14th, 2010

 

In cooperation with the ABC requirements, the Eneslow Pedorthic Institute (EPI) is offering a three-level competency training course for aspiring CPEDS. To provide maximum benefit in a minimum of time, a portion of the level one curriculum will be administered through a distance learning program that includes required readings, and testing of all mandatory topics. Upon passing the level one test, students will attend the remainder of the pedorthic pre-certification course at the Eneslow Pedorthic Institute. Upon completing the course and successfully passing the competency tests, and fulfilling the 1,000 hour "Clinical practice Requirement" students are eligible to sit for the ABC exam to earn their Pedorthic Certification (CPED Pedorthist).
