Question: I remember reading that diabetic shoes are not covered on the side of a prostheses, or if a patient is non-ambulatory. Can someone answer this question -- and if this is the case, where I can find this information?

CMS Is trying to put us out of business!

Why haven't the PFA, ABC, BOCO,ADA, AADE,and the major diabetic footwear manufacturers filed a federal lawsuit and or federal injuction against Surety Bonds, and even more damaging Mandatory Pedorthic Facility Accreditation?

Just got a flyer (see it here) from CMC/NSC/Palmettogba. Occupational therapists are exempt from accreditation. So are Physical Therapists, Orthotists, Prosthetists and Pharmacists and Podiatrists and their staffs. None of these Therapeutic footwear providers need to be accredited, but a Pedorthist with 20 + years of experience needs to be?

Orthotists/prothetists,occupational therapists,physical therapists, and doctors are also exempt from surety bonds.

Where is the reasoning for this? Has CMS found massive fraud in pedorthic footwear -TSB billing? I did not see any headlines!

This policy is blatantly unfair and prejudicial against the small independent pedorthic footwear store. Accreditation requires hundreds of hours of paperwork and thousands of dollars, and the end result is that small companies can't afford it and are driven out of business.

Many thousands of diabetics do not know about or use the Therapeutic Shoe Benefit. Many that do are forced to go to Brace & Limb companies that offer no more than 2-3 brands, styles, and colors. If the patient does not like the looks and feel of the Diabetic Footwear, THEY WILL NOT WEAR IT. How will this reduce the risk of toe and foot infections, ulcers, and amputations?

Please, somebody help us to stop this absurd policy. Please pass this along to the correct person/committee that can act on this. Someone must have a federal attorney who can get an injunction. Please. I Know there are hundreds of stores like mine that in this economy cannot survive this added level of government b.s.

Response: Brain Lagana, Executive director of PFA has stated. “According to CM their decision to rescind the pedorthic (along with several other practitioner groups) exemption didn't have to do with waste, fraud and abuse. The pedorthic exemption was rescinded because of educational concerns.” It is only logical that educational requirements for credentialing is what they must base their decisions on. Until at least a 2-year degree is required to be certified as a pedorthist, along with at least the 1,000 hours of clinical experience, it will be impossible to convince any of the decision makers to accept our credential.

Question: I thought I remembered reading something about a facility dispensing shoes to the diabetic public needed to maintain a certain dollar amount of shoe stock. This may not be correct, but if it is, could someone please point me to the place it was written? I’ve searched the Web for quite awhile on it and nothing seems to come up. I checked DME, PFA and MCS and couldn’t find any info. I have people that want to get rid of most of our stock and want to double check before they attempt to purge it. Thanks!

Brazil Retaliates Against China with Surcharges on Shoes and Tires

Brazil's Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade announced the placing of antidumping regulation on the import of shoes and tires from China. According to the Ministry, the decisions were taken by the Foreign Trade Board (Camex) and published in the Diário Oficial, the Federal Official Gazette.

Resolution number 48 of the Camex, according to the Ministry, forecasts the application of a surcharge of US$ 12.47 per pair of shoes imported from China. Full Text

Nike Protests Chamber's Climate Change Stance

Nike has circulated a statement regarding their serious disagreement with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for its recalcitrant position on climate policy that doubts trends toward global warming.

Nike said in a statement, "Nike fundamentally disagrees with the US Chamber of Commerce's position on climate change and is concerned and deeply disappointed with the US Chamber's recently filed petition challenging the EPA's administrative authority and action on this critically important issue." LSUHSC Researchers Working to Prevent Diabetic Neuropathy

New Orleans, LA – Dennis Paul, PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmacology, and Harry Gould, MD, PhD, the Tom Benson Professor of Neurology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, have been awarded one of two scientific research grants made in 2009 by The Neuropathy Association. The $80,000 grant will fund research to learn how to prevent nerve cell death in people with uncontrolled or untreated diabetes resulting in neuropathy.

In these patients, an enzyme called sodium potassium ATPase, know as the sodium pump because it pumps excess sodium ions out of the cell, does not work. When inflammation occurs, it triggers an increase in the number and sensitivity of sodium channels in the nerve cell membrane causing an influx of sodium with no way to get rid of it. Water follows the sodium into the nerve cells, causing swelling until the cells burst, a process called lysis. Full Text

Heel Pain in Youth Athletes: A Warning Sign

Indoors and outdoors, youth athletes stay active year-round in competitive sports, and for many of them heel pain has become "just another part of the game." The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons advises that when a child complains of heel pain, it should be diagnosed promptly because it may be a warning sign of a serious foot problem.

Karl Collins, DPM, FACFAS, a St. Louis-area foot and ankle surgeon, says heel pain occurs frequently in children ages 6 to 14 as their feet grow and the heel bone develops. "As children become more active in sports they increase their risk for growth-plate injuries and subsequent heel pain," says Collins. This is especially true at back-to-school time when surgeons see an increase in middle and high school athletes experiencing heel pain with football and soccer seasons simultaneously underway. Both courses qualify for continuing education credits from both the American Board for Certification in Orthotics Prosthetics & Pedorthics (ABCOP, 14 credits) and the Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification (BOC, 14.08 credits).
