Question: I had a call from a patient looking for a straight lasted hiking boot. Does such a boot exist? Can anyone give me the name of a manufacturer that makes one? Thanks.
- Neil Lipsitz, C. Ped.
Response: Markel Shoes co. has these kind of straight last shoes/boots.

Question:
For the past fifty plus years, PFA has been the voice of and home for pedorthists. What role do you think is most important for PFA to perform going forward, short term and long term? - Robert
Schwartz, C. Ped., Eneslow Pedorthic Enterprises
Previous Response: In response to Shane
Hayes' comments to George Richards', Robert Schwartz' and Sammy T's
previous postings [in the last two issues of PNW] regarding the role
PFA and ABC in lobbying on behalf of us C. Peds: I guess I'm a
little confused. I thought that PFA, as the trade association for C. Peds,
had as a primary
goal lobbying and looking to our interests -- not ABC, which, as
a replacement for BCP, is a credentialing association. Did BCP
perform lobbying for us in the past?
In the orthotic and prosthetic world, AOPA and the Academy of Orthotists
and Prosthetist do the lobbying for their members -- most
of whom are the day-to-pay practitioners in their fields. Feel free
to correct my perception if I'm wrong about this.
- James Garner, R.Ph., C. Ped., CO New Response: Your perception is a very
normal response from a lot of members. As you clearly stated, in the
O&P world, both the trade organization & the credentialing body
lobby on behalf of their membership. But when it comes to
pedorthics, our members think that our credentialing body (ABC) doesn’t
need to do anything for us but collect our dues. Yet Medicare looks
to our credentialing body as being a voice on our behalf. ABC has
steadfastly refused to lobby on behalf of pedorthists in an equal manner
to O&P, as evidenced by O&P having an exemption for facility
accreditation and pedorthists' exemption being mysteriously reversed last
fall.
Yes, BCP used to lobby on our behalf – it was less visible because both PFA & BCP had the same offices and mostly the same personnel. PFA’s primary goal is education, but lobbying for pedorthists is a close second followed by all other pedorthic interests. If ABC would work in concert with PFA on behalf of pedorthists and lobby on behalf of pedorthists in an equal manner to O&P, we would finally have the unified voice we had when PFA & BCP worked together. As long as the word "Pedorthics" is legally part of ABC’s name, I feel they are legally responsible to be a voice for pedorthics. Shane
Hayes, C. Ped.
New Response: Mr.
Garner is correct. It is indeed PFA's responsibility to lobby,
market, and support the pedorthic industry; not ABC's. ABC is a
credentialing organization.
- Erick J. Janisse, C.O., C.Ped. New Response: I would agree that PFA is supposed to look after the interests of pedorthists and that ABC is just the credentialing body. However, I must give kudos where they are due. As a pedorthic educator, I have been contacted several times over the last couple of months by ABC asking me if I needed marketing materials to hand to current or potential students. I have received two shipments of well-crafted literature to dispense, at no charge to the school. They have, many times, volunteered to sent an ABC rep to come to class and answer questions for students, again with no fee attached. ABC asked a representative of the pedorthic educators to come talk to their exam item writers last November, so as to gain a better understanding of the educational process we use. Partially due to this, national pass rates for the May exam are back to normal levels. Where others have dropped the ball, hoping it will roll under the bench, ABC has really stepped up to the plate for pedorthic educators and future pedorthists. - Rick E. Sevier C. Ped BOC
Ped.
Response from PFA and ABC: To the readers of
the Newswire—this joint information is provided by PFA and ABC:
PFA’s role is that of a professional membership association for the
pedorthic profession and has the primary responsibility for promoting the
profession of pedorthics and the way the profession is viewed by the
public, legislators and regulators. Mr. Garner incorrectly
identified PFA as a trade association. A trade association’s
membership is comprised of individual company members (for example, the
Air & Expedited Motor Carriers Association or the American Bearing
Manufacturers Association) whereas a professional membership
organization’s membership is made up of individuals (such as PFA, the
American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, or the National
Child Care Association).
ABC is a
credentialing and accreditation board. Its mission and goals are to
administer certification programs, establish standards of organizational
performance, mandate professional continuing education, administer a
Professional Discipline program and communicate the importance of ABC
credentials. ABC communicates the importance of ABC credentials through
outreach with consumer groups, educators and regulatory bodies such as
CMS. While we do have separate missions and programs, our two
organizations are constantly seeking ways we can collaborate for the
benefit of the pedorthic profession.

Diabetic foot complications are the No. 1 cause of non-traumatic foot amputations in the United States and cause one in five people with diabetes to enter the hospital. Teach proper foot care to help prevent or delay this occurrence.
What causes foot problems with diabetes?
In patients with diabetes, blood flow to the feet may be
impaired. This means that the foot is less able to fight infection or heal
itself.
Nerve damage (neuropathy) may be present, causing a lack of sensation in the feet. Pain may not be felt even with injury, predisposing you to foot ulcers and infection. The skin may also become dry, cracking and peeling easily, since neuropathy may cause sweating to be impaired.
The following guidelines will help you protect the feet and should be done daily. Full Text
