Response: John, you are correct; there is no
such thing as free. If there is no asterisk which explains co-payments,
deductibles, etc. and this company is waiving those, there may be
something unethical and/or illegal going on.
For DME this
type of infraction can be reported (anonymously if you wish) to a number
of agencies:
1) National
Supplier Clearinghouse
2) The DME MAC in which this is occuring 3) The Program Safeguard Contractor in your area 4) The Office of Inspector General (OIG) 5) Long Term Health Care Office of CMS For non DME
issues there is a similar process.
- Dr. Paul
Kesselman
Response: Having had some recent contact
with a representative of PalmettoGBA regarding Ohio compliance issues, I
turned the tables and asked that source for input in this regard.
Here is the response I received. Since the links supplied seem to
have been somewhat disabled/de-linked through email handling, I have
re-directed through the tool at TinyURL.com.
Hope this helps: The following is a link concerning reporting abuses to NSC Supplier Audit & Compliance Unit - http://tinyurl.com/ley7c6 Just follow the instructions list on this page. The following link to report the suspected abuses to Jurisdiction B, who handles the paying of DME claims in your states. http://tinyurl.com/lb7769 - Mark B. Levy, Board Director, State Board of Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics, Columbus, OH Question: For the past fifty plus years, PFA has been the voice of and home for pedorthists. What role do you think is most important for PFA to perform going forward, short term and long term? - Robert
Schwartz, C. Ped., Eneslow Pedorthic Enterprises
Response
in PNW issue #324: Lobby on our behalf.
- George Richards, C. Ped., Bach Relief and
Comfort Store Response
in PNW issue #324: I really wonder what the PFA is doing for us
pedorthists; we are being pushed around and around from every single state
and federal department. They are cutting our legs off, preventing us
from earning our worth of work hours and threatening our survival. So
I really wonder when the merry-go-round will stop. What is real
the role of the PFA, how they are helping us? So far I do
not think for a second that they are doing anything more than the
certifying companies like ABC and BOC. If, God forbid, the
President's health care plan goes through, we can probably close up our
facilities and bury our future plans. Someone really needs
to wake up and shake up the govenment, and explain to them
that we are not here for fun!??! - Sammy T., C. Ped. New Response: Cheers to Mr. Schwartz
for repeating the question PFA asks of itself regularly short term, in
addition to long term strategic planning to insure they are on track with
the wishes of the membership.
Cheers to Mr. Richards for becoming a C. Ped. and realizing that PFA’s lobby efforts have certainly helped all C. Peds, but it’s only one aspect of PFA’s responsibilities to the membership. (Even though I think it’s an oxymoron to sell chairs in a Back Relief store and diabetic shoes under the TSD.) Jeers to Mr. Sammy T. [regarding a response in a previous issue] for not bothering to read PFA’s ongoing responses to this same question or PFA’s latest response a month ago in Pedorthic Newswire, Current Pedorthics, Online Pedorthics or on the PFA website. Jeers for not busting ABC’s chops and a serious lackluster performance of lobbying on our behalf. Cheers to Mr. T. and Mr. Richards for volunteering their time and additional funding to help PFA in their efforts to make this a better world for all pedorthists. Just leave your information at brian@pedorthics.org and send your lobbying contributions to: Pedorthic Footwear Association 2025 M St., NW, Suite800,Washington, DC 20036. - Shane Hayes, C. Ped. Watch This! Meet the Man Who Can Make Your Most Painful Stilettos Feel As Comfy As Sneakers
To get your week started off on the right foot, I've got an I-can't-believe-it fashion story to share with you. I first heard about pedorthist , Bob Schwartz, a few weeks ago, when a juicy rumor came my way that there was a "shoe doctor" who performs "surgery," transforming sky-high uncomfortable heels into super-comfy, slipper-like shoes--all without scarring or screwing up your shoe. Sounds too good to be true, right?
That's what I thought too. Full Text and Video Link

Saving Limbs by Healing Chronic Diabetic Foot and Leg Wounds
by Dennis McGrath
A 43-year-old Iraq war veteran with diabetes is living in Texas with his wife and four young children when he is told that he must prepare for the amputation of one of his legs. The spreading, non-healing wounds and their complications make the amputation necessary to save not just his limb, but his life, his doctors tell him. But he refuses to proceed with the amputation surgery.
Instead, he searches the Web until he finds a research study on limb preservation and wound healing advances. The study is led by a former military doctor now at Boston Medical Center, a podiatrist and podiatric surgeon by the name of Dr. Vicki Driver. The man gets in his truck and drives 1,500 miles to see her. She agrees to work with him, enlisting the help of a team of vascular, cardiac, and other specialists, and in the end, she saves his leg. Later, when he develops wound ulcers in the other leg, she and her team of specialists manage to heal and save that one, too. Full Text

Numb, Tingly Toes Sign of Peripheral Neuropathy
Question: Would you give me some information on peripheral neuropathy? I have seen a heart doctor, a nerve doctor, a family doctor, a foot doctor and a chiropractor, and I’m still confused about what it is. I’m a 78-year-old, active male.
Answer: If you have been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, you likely went to the doctor complaining of numbness, tingling or burning sensations in your feet and/or hands. These symptoms define peripheral neuropathy. The term refers to nerve damage along the periphery of your body, that is, in your hands and feet.
Your nervous system is like a vast network of telephone wires, sending messages to your brain and spine. The signals sent via your nerves are interpreted by your brain: for example, that your feet are cold or that you’ve just burned your hand. If the peripheral nerves are damaged, however, the signals get crossed and messages get jumbled. This explains the numbness, tingling or burning.
It’s easy to be confused by peripheral neuropathy. There are more than 100 different kinds of peripheral neuropathy, with various causes, severities and symptoms. Full Text
