BOC Staff President Hired – National Executive Search Concluded

ANCC’s Claudia Zacharias, MBA, CAE to Replace Departing Greg Safko

The Board of Directors of the Board of Certification/Accreditation, International (BOC), is very pleased to have concluded a nationwide search to replace departing President Greg Safko with Claudia Zacharias, MBA, CAE. Zacharias, to begin as President on August 24, 2009, brings over 20-years of association, credentialing and institutional recognition and accreditation programs experience, most recently in the healthcare field, through tenure with the American Nurses Credentialing Center and other leading organizations.

NEW QUESTION

Question: I use Google Alerts to keep myself on top of certain issues that could show up on the world wide web. While Google Alerts is not perfect, it does email me new postings on Medicare diabetic shoes, on certified pedorthists, and other key phrases that I set up as Google discovers them on the WWW. Some emails about the new pages are not relevant as this software will find a new posting that has all the words in the phrase that I am interested but not in the sequence that I am interested. So I have had to discontinue some phrases as I got too many Google Alert emails that were not useful.

One troubling issue that is showing up routinely from Google Alerts is the number of new web postings for "free" Medicare diabetic shoes. I thought that there were Medicare rules about not advertising "free" diabetic shoes because there is a 20% coinsurance possibility as well as the cost of the annual deductible for Medicare beneficiaries. Yes, there are some secondary insurances that cover the 20% coinsurance and/or the annual deductible, but not all secondary insurance do cover these two out-of-pocket costs. Thus, advertising "free" diabetic shoes is prohibited, I thought.

What agency of Medicare or branch of the MAC DMERC that the TSD supplier is based does one report a supplier that is using "free" Medicare diabetic shoes advertising directly to beneficiaries?

Response: I really wonder what the PFA is doing for us pedorthists; we are being pushed around and around from every single state and federal department. They are cutting our legs off, preventing us from earning our worth of work hours and threatening our survival. So I really wonder when the merry-go-round will stop. What is real the role of the PFA, how they are helping us? So far I do not think for a second that they are doing anything more than the certifying companies like ABC and BOC. If, God forbid, the President's health care plan goes through, we can probably close up our facilities and bury our future plans. Someone really needs to wake up and shake up the govenment, and explain to them that we are not here for fun!??!

CIT Unit to Receive $1 Billion

Ailing business lender CIT Group Inc., which recently signed a $3 billion financing deal with its largest bondholders, will provide $1 billion of that money to a unit that gives cash advances and credit to manufacturers and retailers, it told some customers on Friday.

In a memo addressed to "clients and industry associates," the unit, called CIT Trade Finance, said the provision of $1 billion by its parent, CIT Group, reflects its "commitment to support" the unit and its clients. Full Text

Nike and Adidas Speak Out About Honduran Rights

Nike, adidas, The Gap Inc., and Knights Apparel, released a joint letter to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton calling for the restoration of democracy in Honduras.

The group said that while they "do not and will not support or endorse the position of any party in this internal dispute," they feel that it is necessary to join with President Barack Obama, the governments of countries in Americas, the Organization of American States, the UN General Assembly and the European Union in calling for the reinstatement of democracy in the country. Crocs Story Ignites Media Frenzy

After a story in the Washington Post sparked renewed questions about the viability of Crocs — and spurred major media attention — the struggling company went straight to the web to defend its position.

Spokeswoman Tia Mattson told Footwear News on Friday that a reporter from the Washington Post called Crocs CEO John Duerden on Wednesday to get comments for a story about the brand. The article, which appeared Thursday, intimated that the company’s collapse could be imminent and that Crocs would be unable to pay down debt due in September. According to Mattson, the piece did not represent Duerden’s side of the story. Full Text

Oxygen 'May Help Diabetics Heal Foot Wounds'

Scientists have claimed that oxygen treatment can help diabetics heal foot wounds and avoid lower limb amputation.

Every 30 seconds a person somewhere in the world loses a lower limb to amputation due to diabetic foot disease. Now, an international team has found in their study that oxygen can heal the debilitating wounds that plague people with diabetes.

In their study, the scientists have modelled the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which is the intermittent exposure of the body to pure oxygen under pressure, to heal the chronic wounds that lead to the need for amputation. Full Text

What Is Edema? What Causes Edema?

Edema, is swelling caused by fluid retention - excess fluid is trapped in the body's tissues. In the UK/Ireland/Australasia and some other countries the word is spelled oedema. Swelling caused by edema commonly occurs in the hands, arms, ankles, legs and feet. It is usually linked to the venous or lymphatic systems. Edema was formerly known as dropsy or hydropsy.

Edema may be generalized or local. It can appear suddenly, but usually develops subtly - the patient may first gain weight, or wake up with puffy eyes. Many patients wait until symptoms are well advanced before seeking medical help. Full Text

In cooperation with the ABC and BOC requirements, Eneslow Pedorthic Institute (EPI) is offering the three-level competency training course for aspiring CPEDS. To provide maximum benefit in a minimum of time, a portion of the level one curriculum will be administered through a distance learning program that includes required readings, interactive CD’s and testing of all mandatory topics. Upon passing the level one test, students will attend the remainder of the pedorthic pre-certification course at Eneslow Pedorthic Institute from August 10th through August 25th, 2009. The course includes the required tests for competency to sit for the ABC and BOC exams.
