NEW QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS

Question: We have had limited success with providing slip resistant shoes to chefs and cooks at local restaurants or kitchen staff at school cafeterias.   This customer normally shows up as a podiatry referral for supportive shoes to use with orthotics for plantar fasciitis or other foot pain diagnosis.  But the customer's work environment requires slip resistant soling.   We have tried to use Brooks Addiction Walker which their catalog specs show soling that is supposed to be slip-resistant (ASTM F 489096).  But in wet/oily conditions the customers are still slipping.   We experimented bringing in a PG Lite style that showed data about "superior slip resistant in wet/oily" but that customer reported severe slipping.   Propet offered a slip-resistant style but that style did not have enough heel counter support to use with orthotics.  What have other PNW readers found to offer the best support and the best slip-resistance in wet/oily conditions?

John Mishasek, BOC Pedorthist, C. Ped.

Question:
Can somebody please explain exactly what I would need to do to become a C. Ped. this year?  I know that I need to pass a test, but am not sure what the other requirements are.  For example, do I need a certain amount of hours working under a C. Ped. in a pedorthic facility?  Are there other work requirements?  Does ABC or BOC require an Associates degree? Any clarification would be appreciated.

PREVIOUS QUESTIONS WITHOUT RESPONSES

Question: I have seen precious little written about the upcoming surety bond requirements for DME suppliers. I have been receiving mailings from various bond companies and seeing ads in O&P publications but that's about it. A little on-line research on the topic seems to indicate that O&P professionals in states with licensure are exempt. Can someone from PFA or ABC please give us some definitive guidance on this issue?

Wade Nield, C. Ped., Feet 1st Shoes, Inc.

Question: Just wondering if anyone knows what sort of HIPAA compliancy issues, if any, would be involved with emailing back and forth with your patients?

Amazon.com Acquires Zappos

by Jocelyn Anderson

Amazon.com has announced it will acquire Zappos.com for $807 million in Amazon stock.
Under the terms of the agreement, Zappos shareholders will exchange their stock for roughly 10 million shares of Amazon stock, worth about $807 million, based on the average closing price for the 45 trading days ending July 17, 2009, according to a release. Amazon will also give Zappos employees $40 million in cash and restricted stock units. The acquisition is expected to close during fall 2009.

“We think that there is a huge opportunity for us to really accelerate the growth of the Zappos brand and culture, and we believe that Amazon is the best partner to help us get there faster,” Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, wrote in a letter to the firm’s employees posted on his blog, adding that Amazon had reached out “several months ago.” As reported by Footwear News in May, Zappos recently launched a major expansion project, forging a business in clothing, housewares, jewelry and accessories. Flip-flops Trip Up Foot Health

Flip-flops aren't just hazardous to politicians — they also pose risks for your feet. The floppy footwear, once contained to the beach, can now be spotted year-round.
That's a problem, say foot specialists.

Most flip-flops offer no arch support and cause people to alter their gait because of the extra work it takes to keep them on. Full Text

Timberland Designs First Recyclable Footwear

The Timberland Company has launched its latest green product innovation, the Earthkeepers 2.0 boot, which is touted as the first footwear the company has designed to be disassembled and recycled, rather than discarded, at the end of its life.

The 2.0 collection is made of 80-percent recyclable or reusable materials that represent a 15 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 15 percent increase in the use of recycled or renewable content, compared to the traditional Earthkeepers boot. Full Text

'Jumping Gene' Diminishes The Effect Of New Type 2 Diabetes Risk Gene

Research led by the German Institute of Human Nutrition (DIfE) has identified a new gene associated with diabetes, together with a mechanism that makes obese mice less susceptible to diabetes. A genomic fragment that occurs naturally in some mouse strains diminishes the activity of the risk gene Zfp69. The researchers also found that the corresponding human gene (ZNF642) is especially active in overweight individuals with diabetes. Full Text

Health Tip: Understanding Pre-Diabetes

Before some people develop full-blown diabetes, their blood sugar is above normal, but not high enough to qualify for a diagnosis of diabetes.

This condition is called pre-diabetes, the American Diabetes Association says.

Normally, a person's blood sugar (glucose) is 100 mg/dl or below. When it rises to between 100 mg/dl and 125 mg/dl, a person has pre-diabetes. Once a blood test determines that blood sugar is 126 mg/dl or higher, diabetes is diagnosed, the ADA says. Full Text

The Merits of Going Barefoot

A new book argues that filthy, smelly, unadorned feet is the cutting edge in sports technology. Our own jogger tests its fashionable claims

I won my first race when I was five, the 100-metre dash. The word "won" is a bit generous, though, since I was the only competitor. Maybe "dash" isn't right either since my time was 21.9 seconds.
My family was living on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, and a yellowed Honolulu Star-Bulletin clipping records my proud moment. But what really captures the memory is a picture of me running alone on the track.

BECOMING A CERTIFIED PEDORTHIST

Join A Growing Service Profession: Pedorthics

Pedorthics is a professional field covering the design, manufacture, modification and/or fit of footwear. Pedorthics encompasses shoes, orthoses and foot devices that prevent or alleviate foot problems caused by disease, overuse, injury or congenital defect. Certified Pedorthists work with patients and their footwear to conform to a doctor's footwear prescription as part of the patient's treatment

To become a certified pedorthist, you must take a pre-determined number of course hours in pedorthics and pass a certifying examination overseen by either The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics® or Board for Orthotists/Prosthetists Certification, Int’l.  Both the ABC and BOC are independent certification bodies that set standards for the profession and are recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
