Question: I have been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy but am not diabetic. I have been reading about the Anodyne Therapy System. My Neurologists office is not aware of this. Are there any physicians in the Springfield, Illinois area that I may contact to assist with this treatment either in the office or at home? - PNW Reader
Response: You might find help
with something called Micro-vas. It helps people with peripheral
neuropathy. You can find more answer at www.microvas.com; it may be helpful to look in
to this because, like you said, you don't have to be diabetic to have neuropathy.
Also. you might want to go to a podiatrist to find this. I dont know if
a Neurologist would have it. There is also an over the counter vitamin
called Alpha lipoic acid that is known to help patients with
neuropathy.
- Rodney Johnson, C. Ped. Response: Peripheral neuropathy comes in several
forms and from several etiologies. It is most commonly associated with
diabetes, alcoholism, hypothyroidism, exposure to heavy metals and spinal
pathology. Unfortunately, the cause for many patients is never
determined and it is then called idiopathic peripheral neuropathy.
Anodyne therapy was popular for a short time several years ago but
multiple studies have failed to demonstrate its efficacy. As a
result, many insurance companies have decided not cover anodyne. I
suggest that you consider MicroVas therapy. It's efficacy is proven
and it is a covered benefit under most insurance plans including Medicare.
I've provided many patients with MicroVas therapy for peripheral
neuropathy and the majority have responded. In the most dramatic
case, an 82 year old, obese white diabetic female presented in a
wheelchair due to sensory and motor neuropathy secondary to her diabetes.
She received twice weekly MicroVas therapy for three months and
gradually improved from wheelchair to walker to cane. After three
months of therapy, she walked out of our clinic on her husband's arm.
Clearly, this was a dramatic improvement but it illustrates what is
possible. Good luck.

Question: I have seen precious little written about the upcoming surety bond requirements for DME suppliers. I have been receiving mailings from various bond companies and seeing ads in O&P publications but that's about it. A little on-line research on the topic seems to indicate that O&P professionals in states with licensure are exempt. Can someone from PFA or ABC please give us some definitive guidance on this issue? Wade Nield, C. Ped., Feet 1st Shoes, Inc. Question: Just wondering if anyone knows
what sort of HIPAA compliancy issues, if any, would be involved with
emailing back and forth with your patients?

When Dana Schwertfeger
was growing up in Wallingford in 1975, he was an active teen who enjoyed
sports and outdoor activities. At 18, he started to notice muscle weakness
in his lower legs. Examined by a physician, he was told he needed to get
more exercise.
Gradually the young
man's leg weakness worsened and he developed foot drop, hammertoes and
other problems he initially attributed to poor footwear.
When seen by a
neurologist, Schwertfeger received a thorough examination that including
testing for both motor and sensory nerve function. For example, deep
tendon reflexes, such as the knee-jerk response, were tested.

A new study being
conducted at one of the nation’s top podiatric medical colleges looks to
better understand a device that many podiatrists prescribe everyday in
their practices—customized foot orthotics, also referred to in the medical
community as orthoses.
The three-year study,
funded by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), is currently
investigating the success rate of foot orthotics in the treatment of
patients suffering from plantar heel pain—an ailment that many podiatrists
are able to treat successfully with prescription orthotics.

DIABETES by Jenilee Matz, M.P.H.
They carry you everywhere. You dress
them with snug slippers, comfy sneakers and strappy sandals. By the time
you're 50, they will have carried you about 75,000 miles. Your feet work
hard! And if you have diabetes, you need to work hard to care for them.
Pay special attention to your feet. Any small bump, bruise or scratch can
escalate into a more serious problem.
Why do I have to worry about my
feet?
People with diabetes often have
problems with their feet. These issues stem from nerve damage and blood

One step for foot treatment, one
giant step for overall diabetic care. That’s how the team at the Diabetic
Foot Wound Healing Clinic at the South East Toronto Family Health Team
(SETFHT) are approaching foot ulcers; with a holistic approach that
encompasses treatment, education and prevention.
Foot wounds are usually not serious
enough to cause great alarm, but for diabetic patients, it’s an area that
can lead to severe complications. Approximately one in seven people with
diabetes will develop a foot ulcer at some point during the course of
their disease, which can lead to morbidity and mortality. Full Text
