A new product will appeal to travelers who cringe at airport checkpoints when they must take off their shoes and walk barefoot or in socks or stockings across floors that hundreds of other naked feet have trod.

Ekosteps, a California company, has created disposable footwear made of recycled paper. The lightweight, thin thongs held on by a fiber string are TSA-approved. Travelers can slip them on and pass through screening while their street shoes are being checked. Full Text

Brown Shoe Company Inc. has completed its 350,000-square-foot Famous Footwear distribution center in central California. The aim is to add time savings and cost efficiencies to the process of shipping footwear to the chain’s stores and FamousFootwear.com customers west of the Rocky Mountains.

The Famous Footwear distribution center is located within Tejon Industrial Complex, a 1,450-acre business park anchoring California’s central trade corridor. The complex is part of the 270,000-acre Tejon Ranch, a strategic location, Brown Shoe Company says, approximately 90 minutes north of the Los Angeles ports and four hours south of Oakland. ...The desire to find a good deal at area department stores, shops, boutiques and other retail outlets is a sentiment that's felt by many, even more so during these recessionary times. It's also something retailers say they are working to respond to at the cash register.

Whether it's discounts, complimentary samples or loyalty cards, there are definitely options for cutting costs, even if they're minor, when shopping for fashions, shoes, beauty products and other retail purchases. Full Text

Danny DiPrima figured Groover’s Shoe Renewing had reached its maximum earnings potential, so he and his wife, Debbie DiPrima, started researching, looking to expand the shoe shop with a logical new business.

What he found was pedorthics, a field that was still unknown in much of the medical community but was recognized by Medicare.

A pedorthist is somebody who works hand in hand with a doctor, DiPrima said. When people need modified shoes because of injury or amputation, a pedorthist is trained to fit the shoes to the condition. Full Text

DIABETES

Diabetes Sufferer Joins with Amputees in "Silent Assassin" Campaign

A U.K. man who came close to losing his leg through diabetes is campaigning for better treatment for sufferers of the “silent assassin”.

Enfield resident Philip French, 42, is prone to developing ulcers on his feet has had to have 30 operations in the past 20 years to prevent them from becoming infected.

He broke his foot playing football in 1995, which led to an abscess which covered the sole of his foot and gangrene which threatened to engulf his lower leg, but was saved by surgery.

Diabetes, nicknamed the silent assassin because it can lead to conditons such as strokes and heart attacks, can damage the nerve supply and blood flow, which can result in ulcers and slow healing wounds. Full Text

Diabetic Nerve Pain: 10 Foot Care Tips to Protect Yourself

Diabetes can mean double trouble for your feet. First, diabetes can reduce blood flow to your feet, depriving your feet of oxygen and nutrients. This makes it more difficult for blisters, sores, and cuts to heal. And second, the diabetic nerve damage called peripheral neuropathy can cause numbness in your feet. When you can't feel cuts and blisters, you're more likely to get sores and infections.

If you don't notice or treat the sores, they can become deeply infected, and lead to amputation. A sad reality: having a toe, foot, or lower leg surgically removed is 10 times more likely in people with diabetes. Full Text

A Fitting Combination: High-tech Reebok Job, Old World Skills Go Hand in Hand for Footwear Maker

Shoemaker and pattern engineer Tim Noonan walks the line between the handcrafted ways of the Old World and the high-tech world of sports footwear.

In the shoe trade, there’s an old expression: The last is always first. And while that standard of starting with the last, or form the shoe is built around, holds true for both his day job and his custom shoemaking business, the similarities end with the last. Full Text

BECOMING A CERTIFIED PEDORTHIST

Join A Growing Service Profession: Pedorthics

Pedorthics is a professional field covering the design, manufacture, modification and/or fit of footwear. Pedorthics encompasses shoes, orthoses and foot devices that prevent or alleviate foot problems caused by disease, overuse, injury or congenital defect. Certified Pedorthists work with patients and their footwear to conform to a doctor's footwear prescription as part of the patient's treatment

To become a certified pedorthist, you must take a pre-determined number of course hours in pedorthics and pass a certifying examination overseen by either The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics® or Board for Orthotists/Prosthetists Certification, Int’l.  Both the ABC and BOC are independent certification bodies that set standards for the profession and are recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
