Question: My 75-year-old mother has a curved spine that has worsened over the years and now causes her to lean heavily on the left when she walks. She uses a cane and has her shoes altered so that her left shoe has a half-inch lift, and for a long time that was all she needed. Lately she has been experiencing severe foot pain along the outer edge of her left foot when she steps on it or stands. She has seen a doctor and had an x-ray of her foot and is waiting for the results. Assuming there is nothing physically wrong with her foot, does anyone have a recommendation for a foot care product such as an orthotic that would somehow even out the stress on her foot and take the pressure away from the outer edge? She also wants to know if she should see a podiatrist. Any ideas are appreciated.

Comment: Here is the link to the latest Medicare announcement about surety bonds. Orthotists and prosthetists that practice in states with licensure are not required to buy a surety bond (within certain rules of what else they supply or who actually owns the supplier entity). From the language of this announcement, it appears that even in licensure states, pedorthists still have to buy the $50,000 bond. If someone can read this announcement and come up with a different interpretation, would you please share? Also if anyone has found a Medicare approved surety bond company that does not require a personal guarantee, would you please share with me at jmishasek@earthlink.net.

Question: I recently came across a mention of a new German product called Bunion Aid. It looks like an improved bunion splint that is hinged at the 1st met head so it can be worn in a shoe during ambulation. It can be worn both day and night. It has some other good features such as a replacement parts kit to replace the parts that become worn. You can find info on it at: www.alphaorthotics.com/bunion-walkulator.

It is said to be capable of reducing an intermediate hallux valgus angle from around 18 degrees to a near normal 11 degrees. If true, that’s impressive. Has anyone had any experience with this device? I have samples on order and will be trying it soon.

U.K. Retail Sales Beat Expectations

U.K. retail sales were higher than expected in April, as consumers continued to show resilience in the face of deepening recession, the Office for National Statistics said Thursday.

Seasonally adjusted retail sales rose 0.9% on a month-to-month basis in April after a 1.1% increase in March, the ONS said. In annual terms, retail sales rose 2.6%, after a 0.9% gain in March. Economists had forecasted, on average, an increase of 0.5% on the month and a 2.5% gain on the year, according to a Dow Jones Newswires survey. Full Text

High Blood Fats Tied to Diabetic Nerve Loss

Diabetes patients with elevated levels of triglyceride fats are at increased risk of developing a serious complication called neuropathy -- the loss or damage of nerves that results in numbness, tingling and pain in the hands, arms, legs and feet, researchers say.

A study by U.S. researchers indicates that doctors need to monitor diabetes patients' blood fat levels as well as their blood sugar levels. They noted a simple blood test for triglycerides can help doctors identify patients most at risk for neuropathy. Full Text

Diabetic Foot Conference in Kochi

The concept of surgical correction for the diabetic foot and ankle deformity has recently evolved as a means to correct foot deformities

Today in India, there are over 45 million diabetic patients and an estimated 50,000 amputations occurring per year due to diabetes related foot problems. In the diabetic patients, due to nerve damage and poor blood supply of the foot, various deformities of the toes and feet occur. This causes areas of raised pressures in the soles of the feet, where ulcers develop. These ulcers act as portals for entry of bacteria leading to serious infections, which in the immuno-compromised diabetic patient, can result in amputations or even death.

The department of Endocrinology, Diabetic Lower Limb and Podiatric Surgery, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences And Research Centre, Kochi, is organising the inaugural 'Amrita Diabetic Foot Conference 09' in the hospital premises. The conference will be held from 22-24 May, this year. On day one, the talks will be mainly pertaining to the surgical and medical management of diabetic foot. Full Text

Asics Corp. Sees Flat Bottom Line for Fiscal 2009

Asics Corporation posted a 7% increase in net consolidated revenues for the fiscal year ended March 31, helped by continued gains in Japan and the U.S. and offset a bit by negative trends in Europe. Net income was slightly lower for the year, as a strong bottom line performance in Japan was more than offset by double-digit profit declines in the U.S. and Europe.

Asics Corp. consolidated net sales rose 7.0% to ¥241.9 billion ($2.4 bn) for the 2009 fiscal year ended March 31, compared to ¥226.2 billion ($2.0 bn) for the prior year. Sales in Japan increased 9.9% to ¥102.7 billion ($1.0 bn) and sales in the U.S. market increased 5.4% to ¥52.9 billion ($529 million). In U.S. dollar terms, sales increased 20% for the year. In Europe, sales declined 10.1% in yen terms to ¥63.9 billion ($639 mm) for the year. Full Text

In cooperation with the ABC and BOC requirements, Eneslow Pedorthic Institute (EPI) is offering the three-level competency training course for aspiring CPEDS. To provide maximum benefit in a minimum of time, a portion of the level one curriculum will be administered through a distance learning program that includes required readings, interactive CD’s and testing of all mandatory topics. Upon passing the level one test, students will attend the remainder of the pedorthic pre-certification course at Eneslow Pedorthic Institute from August 10th through August 25th, 2009. The course includes the required tests for competency to sit for the ABC and BOC exams.
