ABC Update to the Pedorthic Community

The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics, Inc. (ABC) is committed to maintaining the distinction of excellence in pedorthic credentialing. ABC has taken several steps in the past year to ensure that the high standards of the pedorthic profession are continuing to be met. The involvement of ABC Certified Pedorthists in the evaluation and review of standards and requirements confirms ABC’s dedication to the pedorthic profession.

ABC’s mission is focused on establishing and promoting the highest standards of organizational and clinical performance in the delivery of orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic services. ABC carries out its mission by administering certification, continuing education and accreditation programs, as well as promoting professional ethics and communicating the importance of the ABC credentials.

Certified Pedorthist Practice Analysis

ABC recently conducted a survey of the profession to create a Practice Analysis of Certified Pedorthists. The pedorthic community showed overwhelming support by their tremendous participation. Among other uses, the Practice Analysis allows ABC to develop test specifica¬tions and evaluate the credentialing requirements for future ABC Certified Pedorthists. Dennis Dillard, C.Ped., RTO, chairman of the ABC Pedorthic Exam Team adds, Insights gleaned from the practice analysis data are absolutely essential to the construction of rele¬vant and defensible certification exams. In addition, this information serves the pedorthic education community in their ongoing task of providing instruction and training that is commensurate with the current practices of the profession. PREVIOUS QUESTIONS WITH RESPONSES

Comment: In regards to Rick Sevier’s comments in issue #309, I (presumably along with the majority of the PFA membership - according to PFA’s Executive Director, Brian Lagana’s, response in Newswire #310) feel that the proposed name change more appropriately describes who we have become and what we do as an organization and as an allied health profession.

Mr. Sevier stated,PFA's marketing activities should focus on further exposure and recognition of a long standing, foundational icon (PFA = Pedorthic Footwear Association). While Mr. Lagana has already pointed out and corrected Mr. Sevier’s egregious error in misrepresenting the view of the membership in this matter, I don’t want people to be misled by the preceding statement, either. Lest anyone falsely assume that this proposed name change is somehow unprecedented, I’d like to remind Mr. Sevier that prior to 1994, the organization now known as the Pedorthic Footwear Association had, for 36 years, been named the Prescription Footwear Association. Just as the original name was neither sacred nor untouchable, the current name should not be either. Clearly, as our profession continues to evolve and grow, as we improve the quality and scope of our education, and our practitioners and vendor members offer a wider variety of pedorthic and orthotic services, it is only prudent that the name of our professional organization reflect who we have become.

Response: In defense of recent comments, I would like to make two simple points: Elementary math tells us that 242 respondents out of a membership of 2500+ is not a majority of members. Secondly, 1994 was 15 years ago: Al Gore invents the Information Super Highway (Internet), Lorenna Bobbit is found not guilty of Bobbiting her husband, Kurt Cobain dies, and PFA changes its name to Pedorthic Footwear Association. In my universe, that’s a long time ago and long standing. Name changes equal new logos (icons) on shirts, signs, walls, coffee cups, business cards, websites and brochures. This will cost every member, in this economic down turn, who utilizes the existing logo in any way, something. PFA’s assumed goal here is to put a new face on pedorthics. Our allied healthcare teammates are just now settling in to who we are and what we can do. This will cost the members in terms of both cash and continuity. Why fix something that is not broken. Will it be worth the cost? We should concentrate on making what we have work better for us. Lets get the existing face more out in the public, instead of giving it a new face lift and hiding it back in the same old neighborhood.

Comment: Here is the link to the latest Medicare announcement about surety bonds. Orthotists and prosthetists that practice in states with licensure are not required to buy a surety bond (within certain rules of what else they supply or who actually owns the supplier entity). From the language of this announcement, it appears that even in licensure states, pedorthists still have to buy the $50,000 bond. If someone can read this announcement and come up with a different interpretation, would you please share? Also if anyone has found a Medicare approved surety bond company that does not require a personal guarantee, would you please share with me at jmishasek@earthlink.net.

Question: I recently came across a mention of a new German product called Bunion Aid. It looks like an improved bunion splint that is hinged at the 1st met head so it can be worn in a shoe during ambulation. It can be worn both day and night. It has some other good features such as a replacement parts kit to replace the parts that become worn. You can find info on it at: www.alphaorthotics.com/bunion-walkulator.

It is said to be capable of reducing an intermediate hallux valgus angle from around 18 degrees to a near normal 11 degrees. If true, that’s impressive. Has anyone had any experience with this device? I have samples on order and will be trying it soon.

Pedorthic Footwear Association Marks 50

Fresh off its 50th anniversary, the Pedorthic Footwear Association is now looking to the future. With interest in the pedorthics profession on the decline, the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit group is ramping up efforts to attract newcomers through aggressive education and marketing initiatives.

The organization composed of nearly 2,000 members, including 1,600 credentialed pedorthists, as well as footwear vendors, health care professionals, physicians and doctors of podiatric medicine provides services such as certification programs and represents the profession before Congress.

We’ve taken on the task of opening people’s eyes and making them realize what a critical role feet play in their health and well-being, said Brian Lagana, PFA’s executive director. Full Text

Jones to Expand Shoe Woo Shops

After a successful opening and test run of the Shoe Woo concept store in the Menlo Park Mall in Edison, N.J., Jones Apparel Group is upbeat about their two new locations.

Retail Sales Post an Unexpected Decline

Retail sales fell in April, the second straight month of declines. The news dashes hopes that the falloff in consumer spending has bottomed out as recession-battered shoppers remain reluctant to open their wallets. The seasonally adjusted decline of 0.4% in U.S. retail and food services reported by the Commerce Dept. was worse than expected and follows a decline in March that was revised downward to 1.3%. MRSA and Diabetes

Nurses caring for diabetics in community settings are vigilant in stopping bacteria's spread

Managing diabetes is tough enough, even without the various health factors that can exacerbate the disease process.

Now, evidence suggests those living with diabetes may have something else to worry about, their susceptibility to MRSA infection.

The antibiotic-resistant bacterium that poses a threat to those with weakened immune systems at acute and skilled-care facilities is now also becoming an issue in community settings.

For nurses caring for diabetics, this is a major concern since this population is prone to developing skin wounds and infections, most notably foot ulcers, as their conditions linger and exacerbate over time. What's more, diabetics who contract MRSA are at greater risk for more serious, slow-healing wounds because of the dual diagnosis. Full Text

Botox Injections May Ease Diabetes Foot Pain

People with diabetes often suffer from chronic foot pain because of nerve damage, but relief may be at hand. Taiwanese doctors have shown that the pain can be reduced substantially by injections of botulinum toxin type A -- better known as Botox -- into the skin on top of the foot.

Dr. Chaur-Jong Hu, at Taipei Medical University, and associates tested the treatment in 18 patients with type 2 diabetes who had nerve-related pain in both feet. Full Text

May 26th to 27th, 2009: Certified Shoe Fitter Course: Eneslow Pedorthic Institute will offer the Certified Shoe Fitter Course, a comprehensive two day course leading to ABC Certified Fitter of Therapeutic Shoes (CFTS) or BOC Footwear Specialist (BOCFS) for individuals who fit non-custom therapeutic shoes and non-custom diabetic multi-density inserts.

With a greater need for competent, reliable, and ethical patient care as it pertains to those who live with diabetes and the symptoms attributed to the disease, it is necessary to hold those responsible to a higher standard. The ABC Fitter of Therapeutic Shoes and the BOC Footwear Specialist certification are awarded as an attestation of competency for the public, those who require orthotic/prosthetic services as a result of diabetes, and those in other health professions. Applicants for certification are required to complete established educational and experiential requirements.

In cooperation with the ABC and BOC requirements, Eneslow Pedorthic Institute (EPI) is offering the three-level competency training course for aspiring CPEDS. To provide maximum benefit in a minimum of time, a portion of the level one curriculum will be administered through a distance learning program that includes required readings, interactive CD’s and testing of all mandatory topics. Upon passing the level one test, students will attend the remainder of the pedorthic pre-certification course at Eneslow Pedorthic Institute from August 10th through August 25th, 2009. The course includes the required tests for competency to sit for the ABC and BOC exams.
