Question: Can readers recommend a central fab for shoe modifications? Our key individual for doing shoe mods is suffering through a medical condition that may knock him out of action for a long time, and all of our other pedorthists are totally busy with non-shoe mod customer service responsibilities. We have sent customers over to one orthopedic shoe repair business but he is too busy to take on much more. There seems to be a shortage of individuals nationally to replace the current generation of orthopedic shoe technicians. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Response: We offer a central fab for shoe modifications along with our central fab for Amfit type orthotics. Please call (206) 364-1322 or email shoeguy@seattleshoe.com for pricing and details. The national shortage you refer to is very real. Because shoe mods are time-consuming and labor intensive, they are less profitable even though they are no less important than proper footwear or a custom orthosis. The Catch 22 is that shoe repair is on the decline (except during the recession) meaning less basic skills in the labor pool to build upon to create an OST or a technical C. Ped. The students taking C. Ped. pre-cert courses shy away from the machinery and getting their hands dirty, stating they’ll hire someone to do the work. Good Luck because us highly skilled folks are going to retire one day. Those of us who are good clinicians, technicians and retailers are a rare combination. I naively used to think that all C. Peds had that combination of skills. I quickly found out that most are one of the three; which is OK because all provide essential services. So, I’m raising a glass of holiday cheer to all of us in the elite class of C. Peds that can personally do it all. Here’s to retiring with Champagne wishes and caviar dreams!

The Robert M. Palmer, M.D., Institute Of Biomechanics, A Not-For-Profit School has developed three Financial Aid Scholarship Programs to assist those who may be presented with difficulty in participating in a pre-certification course prior to the ABC deadline date of March 1, 2009.

While the RMPI supports the increased, mandatory 1000 internship hours, the short notice for this deadline may present some individuals or companies with financial distress in their attempt to properly staff their business or meet the diabetic epidemic needs within the USA. Therefore, the RMPI would like to offer the following Scholarships:

1) “Do It Now! Become A C.Ped. Scholarship!” Course Tuition $2000.00 - Levels 1,2,3; full payment at time of enrollment; free modest housing with limited availability.

2) Short Term Financial Plan Scholarship - Course Tuition $2500.00 - 3 months financing; final payment and course completion due by February 25, 2009; free modest housing with limited availability.

CMS regulations now require Pedorthists to work in an accredited facility. They must apply for accreditation by January 31, 2009 to achieve accreditation by September 30, 2009, to remain fully compliant, and thus maintain their Medicare billing privileges. February 2nd 2009 to February 17th 2009 Pedorthic Pre-Certification Training Course

ABC (American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics) announced that it will be implementing a 1,000 hour pedorthic clinical practice requirement from a patient care facility for all candidates who seek to become a Certified Pedorthist (C. Ped.) to be eligible to sit for the ABC exam effective March 2, 2009. This requirement is designed to help provide students with practical application of the knowledge, skills and competencies gained during their educational program. The new prerequisite will not be in effect for those individuals applying by March 1, 2009 for the ABC spring exam cycle. Fee: $3995.

N.J. Sues Companies over Foot Pads

A Lakewood company that sells Kinoki Detox Foot Pads made misleading promises that the product removes toxins, asbestos and other harmful substances from the body, New Jersey consumer affairs officials said in a lawsuit filed Thursday.

Xacta 3000 Inc. and its predecessor, Hollywood Gadgets Inc., companies owned by Juda Levin, also failed to respond to consumer complaints, refund money and adequately staff a customer service center, the lawsuit said. Full Text

Kevin Plank is ready to do it again. The chairman and CEO of Under Armour, who dramatically altered the athletic apparel business after launching his company in 1996 with sweat-sopping T-shirts, has now turned his attention to replicating that success in the highly competitive athletic footwear market.

Plank, 36, had previously tiptoed around the footwear arena, with a collection of football cleats in 2006 and then baseball a year later. But in April, he made an aggressive move into sneakers — and now Plank is looking to make further strides. Under Armour on Tuesday will debut running shoes in New York. The collection will feature six models — four shoes for roadwork and two for trails — for men and women, ranging in price from $85 to $120. Full Text

Merry Little Soles — Charity Effort Provides Kids with New Shoes

Busloads of kids gleefully stepped into brand new shoes, thanks to a long-running charity effort. Close to 200 students from area schools visited the Payless Shoe Source store on North University Street in Peoria on Wednesday and Thursday to receive footwear through Shoes for Kids.

Students had their feet measured before running off to pick out a pair of new shoes from the store. Full Text

Diabetes Causes more Amputations than Landmines

Gandhi would have welcomed the support given to the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) by Handicap International. That is the French charitable organisation that has been awarded a Nobel prize for its work with people left crippled and handicapped in Vietnam, Cambodia and other countries by landmines.

Exploding hidden landmines remain a considerable danger, but one that has been overtaken by diabetes as a reason for the amputation of younger people's legs around the world. Full Text

Best Buy Founder gives $40 million to Diabetes Research

Best Buy founder Richard Schulze and his family foundation will give $40 million to University of Minnesota researchers who are intent on finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes, the university announced Thursday. The money, the second largest gift in university history, will be paid over five years and provide about half the $20 million the university will spend annually on diabetes research. Officials said they hope it will provide the financial boost needed to defeat the disease. Full Text

Facility Accreditation One-Day Course, January 12th 2009: Eneslow Pedorthic Institute will hold a live interactive Facility Accreditation Training Course to assist businesses in becoming compliant with the new required standards from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS regulations now require Pedorthists to work in an accredited facility. They must apply for accreditation by January 31, 2009 to achieve accreditation by September 30, 2009, to remain fully compliant, and thus maintain their Medicare billing privileges.

In response to the “Experience Requirements” from ABC and BOC, Eneslow Pedorthic Institute will hold the Pedorthic Pre-Certification Training Course from February 2nd 2009 to February 17th 2009 in New York City, in advance of the new ABC requirements.

ABC (American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics) announced that it will be implementing a 1,000 hour pedorthic clinical practice requirement from a patient care facility for all candidates who seek to become a Certified Pedorthist (C.Ped.) to be eligible to sit for the ABC exam effective March 2, 2009. This requirement is designed to help provide students with practical application of the knowledge, skills and competencies gained during their educational program.
