Question: Dearest vendors & colleagues, My customer wants to know if there is a shoe that will prevent her from getting static electricity shocks while on a treadmill. I PROMISED I would ask y'all if you'd ever heard of anything like this? This supposedly happens whether she is using a gym treadmill or her equipment at home in the garage. Both machines are properly grounded. One trainer advised to get a "pure rubber-soled shoe, like Keds" (for a treadmill???). She uses towels on the guardrails, but she cannot touch the screen monitor. This is a new one on me. Any ideas?

Response: Solution #1: Lose the nylon/polyester workout suit (no, not running in the buff, just change to cotton). This generates static electricity as the pant legs rub together. Solution #2: Use shoes with carbon rubber soles to CONDUCT (balance the differential) the electricity. The shock comes from a differential from the user to the grounded treadmill (that uses carbon rubber treads) caused by a static buildup while running. If the runner keeps the static from building, by dissipating the static with every step, the shock will not be there. Solution #3: Buy a wrist grounding strap for electronic component assembly at Radio Shack. Solution #4: Increase humidity at the facility to decrease static charges. Solution #5: Avoid treadmills Works for me!

Response: Static electricity is generated when certain dissimilar materials move across one another. I suspect that the shoes are not the problem, but that rather her choice of workout clothing is. Tell her to try wearing cotton, including socks, instead of her current synthetic clothing, and see if that does not eliminate the problem.

Response: It is very simple. All you need to do is "wipe" the bottom of ANY shoe/sneaker with a "bounce" or any other anti-static cloth you would use in your home clothes dryer. Before I was a C.Ped. I was a Radiology (X-ray) Technologist and static was a huge problem with handling film.

You will need to "wipe" the bottom of the shoe/sneaker each new day you use the treadmill. This also works to keep doorknobs and other things for giving you that static spark.

Response: There are shoes that are called electrostatic discharge shoes. Redwing used to make some but I am out of the business. Look up that term.

Question: We are looking for a recommendation of a patient appointment scheduling software that can be accessed over a network and by more than one person at a time.

Response: Chronilist by Integra Computing works very well for me. I have been using this application for years. It is fast, inexpensive, easy and allows for multiple users at once spread across a network. You can get it at integracomputing.com. I am not associated in any way with the company, I'm just a very satisfied user. A long time ago, (in a galaxy far far away) I was using a DOS based program that I simply outgrew, not to mention the obsolescence of DOS based software in general. I searched for a long time and looked at a lot of scheduling software before I settled on Chronilist. I have not regretted that decision.

If you have looked at the software on the site I linked to, you can only begin to appreciate some of the things that it can do for you. It not only keeps track of your appointments, it also keeps track of the things you've actually done. So at the end of the day, I have deleted all the people I saw, but they are in a separate, easily search-able area (the log as opposed to the calender) as finished appointments.

Searching for upcoming appointments or finished appointments is very easy.

It also has a great address/phone book that is search-able by keyword.

From a technical standpoint, a big feature of this program is that it doesn't use the windows registry at all. This makes back up and restore very easy. In fact, you can copy the programs folder and sub folders to a thumb drive and it will run from there, without being "installed" at all.

Response: For appointment scheduling we utilize Onebox which handles phone messages, appointments via the computer, and much more. We pay approximately $110.00 a month for approximately 10 message boxes, the appointment calendar and other miscellaneous features, such as phone messages sent to emails or cell phones. Crocs stock plunges after big loss shocks Wall St

Shares of Crocs Inc (CROX.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) plummeted more than 58 percent on Thursday, a day after the maker of colorful clogs posted a deep quarterly loss due to high restructuring costs.

Crocs, whose quirky shoes were once a cult hit, reported a third-quarter net loss on Wednesday of $1.79 per share, compared with a net profit of 66 cents per share a year earlier. Full Text

Survey: Retailers Adjust Return Policies

More than half of the nation's retailers have adjusted return policies to make them more lenient this holiday season, according to a survey from the National Retail Federation.

Around 52 percent of retailers, up from 35 percent a year ago, plan to make return policies more flexible for customers wanting to bring back duplicate or unwanted gifts after the holidays, the survey showed. Full Text

Puma Puts Droga5 in Charge of $100M Global Account

Sportswear marketer Puma has appointed New York-based Droga5 as lead agency for its more than $100 million global marketing account.

Numerous agencies have historically worked on the business. The move, which was made without an official review, marks the first time Puma is consolidating lead ad duties at a single shop.

Going forward, Droga5 will work closely with Puma's in-house marketing team on a new Puma brand campaign, as well as individual product pushes, which will break next year. Full Text

Store withdraws Chinese-made footwear after rash

A popular French clothing chain has stopped selling Chinese-made boots and shoes containing an anti-fungal sachet previously blamed for causing rashes, the store said Thursday. The store, Etam, pulled the product off its shelves, cut commercial ties with the supplier and forbade its other suppliers from using the sachets.

They contain dimethylfumarate, meant to fight humidity and mold. But the substance was blamed in a similar case in France, when chairs were withdrawn from sale after buyers complained of rashes. Full Text

Poll finds that young diabetes patients have trouble coping

Even though a slew of new medical devices launched over the past decade now help kids with type 1 diabetes better manage their disease, a new survey indicates those touched by childhood diabetes still seek more support from schools and about half of young people with the condition have trouble coping.

More than 9,000 people worldwide responded to The DAWN Youth WebTalk Survey online, including about 2,000 Americans. The 3 primary groups polled included young adults with diabetes aged 18 to 25, parents and caregivers of at least one child with the disease and health care professionals.Full Text
