PREVIOUS QUESTION

Question: I operated on this 43 y/o female about 17 years ago for bilateral bunions. She had a distal metatarsal osteotomy with two-screw fixation. I saw her recently because she was concerned about discoloration over the incision of her right foot.

She noticed this discoloration three years ago, but did not tell anyone about it. The discoloration has not changed in size since she first noticed it. She has no pain in her feet and wears 3" heels routinely.

Foot x-rays taken a few weeks ago show that the screw heads are not prominent and are countersunk into the metatarsal. The discoloration on the skin is located over the screws. I have performed thousands of osteotomies with internal fixation and have not seen this type of discoloration before. Has anyone encountered this and could the discoloration be a result of something else?

Response: I have not seen such discoloration because of screws I have seen from metal particles in skin. So I would suspect the alloy of the screw is corroding very slowly.

Consumer Confidence Increases 1.3% in September

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had improved moderately in August, posted a slight gain in September. The Index now stands at 59.8 (1985=100), up from 58.5 in August. The Present Situation Index decreased to 58.8 from 65.0 last month. The Expectations Index, however, increased to 60.5 from 54.1 in August.

The Consumer Confidence Survey is based on a representative sample of 5,000 US households. The monthly survey is conducted for The Conference Board by TNS. The cutoff date for September's preliminary results was Sept. 23rd. Full Text

The Walking Company Reports Q3 Comps Up 2%

The Walking Company comparative store sales increased approximately 2% for the third quarter ended Sept. 30, 2008. The company has been trending up approximately 5% since late July.

Commenting on the recent sales trend, Andrew Feshbach, CEO, said, "Despite the difficult retail environment, we were pleased to produce solid comparative store sales increases over the summer. Crocs Founder Purchases Crocs Canada Assets

Former Crocs CEO and founder, George B. Boedecker, Jr., and a team of private investors purchased the assets for Crocs Canada, Inc. on Sept. 30. Formerly Foam Creations, Crocs Canada Inc. was the original Canadian-based manufacturing facility for Crocs footwear.

While serving as CEO of Crocs, Boedecker made the decision to purchase and re-name Foam Creations in 2004. The company produced the shoes at the Quebec location until April, when all shoe production at the facility was discontinued. There are currently no plans to produce footwear at the site under the new ownership team. At its operational height, the Crocs Canada Inc. facility produced 14,000 shoes per day, accounting for approximately 5 million pairs of shoes per year.
