CMS Grants Orthotists, Prosthetists & Pedorthists Exemption to the Mandatory Accreditation Deadline

On September 3rd, CMS announced that professionals, including physicians, PTs, OTs, qualified speech therapists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, orthotists, prosthetists, pedorthists, podiatrists, optometrists and opticians are exempt from the September 30, 2009, mandatory accreditation deadline.

CMS also announced that this action is only a delay in accreditation requirements and quality standards, and that revised standards for Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS) will be issued in 2009.

ABC continues to be a leading organization assisting CMS with the creation of standards for appropriate, safe and ethical orthotic and prosthetic patient care. The current ABC facility accreditation standards are expected to carry accredited facilities through the transition to the 2009 revised standards. Facilities that are already ABC accredited are ahead of the game, states Michael J. Allen, CPO, FAAOP, ABC President. Facilities that are accredited need to remain in good standing, and those who have recently begun the process should maintain their progress in achieving ABC accreditation. This will prevent a last minute rush to obtain accreditation in 2009 once CMS issues what will hopefully be increasingly appropriate standards.

For those patient care organizations that are not exempt from the accreditation requirements and quality standards, CMS has announced an application deadline of January 31, 2009. This deadline is designed to help ensure the orderly processing of accreditation applications. ABC, along with other Deemed Authorities, has committed to processing those applications received by the January deadline for accreditation by the September 30, 2009 mandatory accreditation deadline.

Question: Has anyone received any email Rx’s from their prescribers? What is the opinion of PNW readers regarding the importance/value of receiving Rx’s via email?

Response: In order for a prescription to be valid, it needs the doctor's signature. As an initial point of contact, an emailed rx could be helpful, but, for the sake of internal record keeping and avoiding problems with audits and inspections, I would want a hard copy of the rx to be sent as well.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification, International (BOC) has officially changed its name to The Board of Certification/Accreditation, International (BOC), effective immediately.

The change took place during a meeting of BOC’s Board of Directors on August 26, 2008, after an extended public comment period. The Board’s decision was unanimous, and reflects BOC’s continued expansion into an organization that certifies and recognizes competency in numerous professional OP&P and health care-supportive areas and is also a CMS-deemed accreditation provider, accrediting facilities as meeting national standards for provision of health care services and health care devices.

It’s a serious matter for an organization that’s been internationally recognized for more than a quarter of a century to consider changing its name, acknowledged Preston Madler, BOCO, chairman of the Board, in making the announcement. Our certificants thought long and hard about it; they used the public comment period to give the Board their opinions. And as their representatives, the Board of Directors has now formally recognized that BOC’s responsibilities have grown. Our new name speaks both to our current activities and to BOC’s potential for future growth within the realm of allied health care, both nationally and internationally. Thomas Bata, 93, 'shoemaker to the world'

Thomas Bata, who moved his family business to Canada ahead of the German invasion of Czechoslovakia and later became, as he put it, "shoemaker to the world," died in Toronto on Monday. He was 93. Bata died in a hospital, said Leslie Tenenbaum, the general counsel for Bata. The family is not disclosing the cause of death, he said.

Bata's footwear is not well known among fanciers of designer shoes from Manolo Blahnik or fans of the latest sneakers from Nike. But Bata made the company, which was founded by his father, so pervasive in the developing world that, according to Tenenbaum, Bata became a generic noun for shoe in some parts of it, particularly in Africa. It is, Tenenbaum added, a situation that somewhat dismays him in his role as the protector of the company's trademarks. Full Text

Footwear Retailers Brace for Active Storm Season

Tropical Storm Fay’s unpredictability and torrential rainfall combined with the threat of approaching storms Gustav and Hanna have retailers tuned in to the seriousness of hurricane season. It’s expected to be a larger hurricane season [than last year], said Scott Bernhardt, COO of weather planning service Planalytics. There are an awful lot of storms brewing up along the Equatorial path and along the coast of Africa....

Meg Offutt, co-owner of Kemp’s Shoe Salon & Boutique in Vero Beach, Fla., is concerned, too. I’m always worried about storms because we had [hurricanes] Frances and Jeanne [in 2004]. Those tore up our town and hit a lot of homes, she said. Full Text

DIABETES

Health Watch: Foot Ulcers

Foot ulcers are a condition common among diabetics. The sores are painful and can lead to amputations. However a new medication is being tested that may help in their treatment.

Joseph Fitzpatrick developed ulcers on the bottom of his feet, which have kept him out of work for two months and prevented him from getting the exercise he needs. "I'm not getting out and running, playing basketball, stuff like that. It's real hard for me," he said.

Poor circulation causes diabetics to lose feeling in their feet which can lead to the ulcers. The condition can also keep the sores from healing, which puts the patients at high risk of infection. "Last year well over 100,000 diabetics lost their limb, their lower limb due to diabetes," Dr. Vickie Driver from the Boston Medical Center said. Full Text

Seemingly minor difficulties could cause you major problems in the long term. Here's what to look for.
There's a reason we talk about "getting back on your feet" after an illness or staying "on your toes": healthy feet are necessary for an active life. Yet many doctors don't even look at a patient's feet during checkups, says Valley Stream, N.Y., podiatrist Andrew Shapiro, a spokesman for the American Podiatric Medical Association. That's a mistake, Shapiro argues, because foot problems rarely get better on their own. Feet tend to deteriorate with age, as the pad of fat on the sole slowly wears down and the effects of any structural problems--legs of unequal length, for example--accumulate. Untreated problems can alter a person's gait, bring on other ailments and make it painful to walk or exercise. And when things get bad enough that people limit their movements, inactivity becomes another threat to their health. Full Text

Study: Foot Locker Most Recognizable Sports Retail Brand

The Foot Locker retail brand is the most recognizable of all sports or outdoor retail brands in the U.S., based on a recent survey conducted by The SportsOneSource Group. The resulting 2008 How America Shops Study, released this week, found that 89% of all respondents to the survey conducted over the summer were aware of the Foot Locker retail brand by a wide margin over the balance of the retail brands serving the sports or outdoor markets. Dick’s Sporting Goods was the second most recognized retail brand, with 72% of the respondents indicating awareness, and Sports Authority came in a close third, with a 70% awareness level. Full Text
