Question: How important is it to belong BOC if we are already married to ABC? The way I see it is that it's just another $200 dollars to spend and more continuing education hours to keep track of and submit. Please correct me if I am wrong and share your thoughts.

Response: The certifying agencies are fee-for-service corporations. In today's economy, it is important ot get the most for your money. You only need one credential to satisfy CMS so you can get reimbursed, no vows required.

If you look at the scope of practice and definition of devices, you will see a distinct difference. It only makes sense to fund an organization that is working to move your profession forward.

Take advantage of the cross credentialing while it is there. There is no doubt that when it is time to pay renewal fees this fall, there will be enough debate for anyone who is interested to make the decision that will best protect them in the environment where they practice. So, when you send money to a corporation you can be assured that they will use that money to support what we do for a living. Don't be duped.

High heels may cause health issues

Most women have worn high heels at one time or another. Some women suffer through every second, and some swear by the shoes. But some women do not know their beloved stilettos or favorite pumps could cause permanent foot deformities that require surgical correction.

Dr. Cliff Richardson, Baton Rouge Foot Care podiatrist, said many of the patients he works with suffer from wearing high heels too often. Full Text

Shoe repair shop helps film cast step back in time

The 16 pairs of vintage shoes dropped off last week at Eastside Shoe Repair, 1937 Winnebago St., looked like they could have been headed for a Goodwill or Salvation Army store.

But the shoes are for actors in the film "Public Enemies" starring Johnny Depp, and Tuesday they were sent back to the cast with new heels, soles and other improvements. Filming for the movie continues this week in northern Wisconsin.

Peg Larabell, owner of the shoe repair shop and a certified pedorthist, said she was surprised to get a call last week asking if she could make the repairs. Full Text

Preventing Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Foot ulcers lead to amputations for thousands of people each year. There are numerous ways to treat them, but no treatment is a guarantee, which is why doctors say your best best is to prevent the progressive sores from ever forming.

Doctors say prevention is key when it comes to foot ulcers, and that there are numerous steps people can take to help avoiding ever having to deal with them.

Dr. Steve Hamar has seen it time and time again, patients who have ulcers because of poor circulation in their legs. The poor circulation is often caused by diabetes, sometimes by vericous veins, and sometimes by a lifetime of smoking. FDA study: Insulin pumps linked to injuries, deaths in teens

CHICAGO (AP) Insulin pumps are used by tens of thousands of teenagers worldwide with Type 1 diabetes, but they can be risky and have been linked to injuries and even deaths, a review by federal regulators finds.

Parents should be vigilant in watching their children's use of the pumps, researchers from the Food and Drug Administration wrote. They didn't advise against using the devices. But they called for more study to address safety concerns in teens and even younger children who use the popular pumps.

The federal review of use by young people over a decade found 13 deaths and more than 1,500 injuries connected with the pumps. At times, the devices malfunctioned, but other times, teens were careless or took risks, the study authors wrote. Full Text

You can leave those blinding white sneakers out of your summer vacation suitcase: Comfortable walking shoes are a fashion dilemma no more.

Not only is it possible to find shoes that are both stylish and wearable, it's probable. Shoe designers, manufacturers and retailers are paying a lot of attention to the burgeoning category of "ath-leisure" - the industry code word for what most people would call weekend shoes.

They're definitely not sneakers, says Catherine Beaudoin of Gap Inc.'s online shoe store Piperlime, but they incorporate a lot of what sneakers have to offer, including arch support, soft materials and rubber outsoles. Full Text
