COPPER RECEIVES EPA APPROVAL FOR CAPABILITY OF KILLING HARMFUL AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY BACTERIA

First Ever EPA Approval for Health Claims Attached to a Solid Antimicrobial Material

The market for antimicrobial doorknobs, hospital fixtures and other products that kill germs on contact may be about to take on a coppery sheen.

The Copper Development Association, a trade group for copper companies, said Tuesday that federal regulators had approved its application to market a group of copper alloys, including brass and bronze, as capable of killing bacteria and microbes effectively enough to protect human health.

Question: I have heard that Medicare will eventually require a separate fitting room for people who dispense the shoes and insole for the Diabetic Medicare program. Has anybody else heard this?

Question: How many L5000 toe fillers can a company bill for? If the patient is missing two toes on the same foot, do we bill for 1-L5000 or 2-L5000? And how many can a person get?

Does the person get 3-L5000 instead of the A5513?

I have called Medicare on this several times and have gotten different answers each time.

Response: One per foot. This is a partial foot prosthetic. The reimbursement is way beyond that of an A5513. You must make a cast of the foot and build. Do not put a plastizote piece on the A5513. When you bill for the client it goes.

Question: Today's retail environment is being increasingly affected by consumers' preference for "green," or environmentally-friendly, products and companies. Some footwear companies have come up with "vegan" styles and other efforts at eco-friendly products. Are there any pedorthists who are brainstorming ways to make their businesses more "green?" Is there a way we can work together as an industry to help protect the planet?

Response: I paid a few dollars more, but I just ordered my plastic shoe bags made of recycled material that is also recyclable. I added a line of shoes that are made of biodegradable materials. Now if I can find bulbs that give off the same full spectrum of halogens, without the heat, that would be ideal! Unfortunately, the new fluorescent coil and spot light bulbs don't quite cut it. Also collecting shoes for soles4souls. Even the more worn or used shoes that I give to a local organization that brings them to Haiti to be distributed. Soles4Souls only takes new and slightly worn shoes.

PREVIOUS COMMENT WITHOUT RESPONSES

Comment: The latest attempt by politicians to fix the problems caused by National Supplier Clearinghouse's inadequate processes to keep crooks from getting DME supplier numbers is to try to pass legislation that requires the purchase of a $500,000 surety bond by each DME supplier. This approach is like little Johnny misbehaving in class so the entire school has to stay after school to write "I will not misbehave" 500,000 times. Instead of going after NSC to make it pay a penalty for letting all those crooks have supplier numbers in Florida, Texas, and California, the pols think that this surety bond approach will fix fraud and abuse by forcing thousands of legitimate suppliers to pay out the nose.

In HME News, it is reported that the $500K surety bond would cost $10,000-20,000 with the surety bond company requiring collateral liquid assets of $1,000,000 (yes, one million dollars) to be shown by the purchaser (owner of DME company) so that the surety bond company has assets to go after if the surety bond is ever used.

So I would think that there will not be many independent TSD suppliers left around if this legislation is passed and if it is enforced. In fact, the original surety bond legislation that this legislation is attempting to modify was passed years ago at the $50,000 amount so this new bill is just increasing the amount by a factor of ten. Go online and search for senate bill 2603 until you find a website that lets you read the bill in its entirety (Medicare Fraud Prevention Act of 2008 ).

Interestingly, no bond companies would sell the $50,000 bond to a DME or to a home health agency before because at the same time the original law was passed, Medicare announced that they planned to audit every HHA and DME in the near future. And Medicare does not like to use audit resources (personnel) unless something is recouped for their effort. So no bond company would sell DME or HHA companies the $50K bond. Sound like a Catch-22? How about Catch-220 since it is a ten times higher bond amount?

Is this legislation worth getting excited about if you own a DME company? In my opinion (strictly an opinion), only in the sense that our elected officials are attempting to fix THE PROBLEM the wrong way. We the people (beneficiaries, DME owners, and any other concerned taxpayers) should be contacting these senators (and our own senators) and asking that the ONLY entities that should have a surety bond rammed down their pocketbooks is NSC and the DME MACs. NSC for letting crooked companies get a supplier number in the first place after paying someone to do a site visit to verify supposedly that the DME company is legitimate. And the DME MACs for paying millions in fraudulent claims before catching on that the fraud in occurring with a brand new DME that somehow does $10-20 million in claims within a few months of getting their supplier number. Example: a few years ago southern Florida had more prosthetic limb claims in 90-120 days by five new suppliers than the entire rest of the country did for the year. Couldn't the DME claims computer have some safeguards programmed in to notice this amount of claims from a brand new supplier? Hello there. New supplier, limit the payments like a line of credit. Prove you are legit, get a higher limit.

So what politician have you contacted this week to point out there are better ways of handling Medicare fraud?

Diving deep to cure wounds

George Young has been diving inside a plastic-and-steel tube for the last two weeks in hopes of healing a stubborn sore inside his mouth.

"It's kind of like being inside a computer tube," Young said, just before laying down on a hospital gurney and sliding inside one of Tri-City Medical Center's two new hyperbaric chambers. Hyperbaric manager Archie Llorca turned a few dials on the chamber's side to start Young's "dive," pumping pure oxygen into the chamber until the pressure inside reached about two atmospheres, equivalent to sinking 66 feet under the sea. Jericho Doctor Arrested For Billing The Dead

Investigators from the Nassau County district attorney’s office have arrested and charged an East Meadow podiatrist with bilking the Medicare and Medicaid programs of more than $30,000 over an 18-month period.

Dr. Alan Cantor, 47, was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with grand larceny and attempted grand larceny in the third degree, scheme to defraud in the first degree and petit larceny. In nearly a dozen incidents, the doctor billed the state and federal healthcare programs for treatments performed on patients who were deceased. Full Story

Drug to cure blindness is 'major breakthrough'

A drug that could prevent the leading cause of blindness in the Western world has shown great promise in early tests.

More than 500,000 people in the UK have irreversible blindness caused by macular degeneration and it is estimated that one third of the population could be affected by 2070.

What is exciting about the research published yesterday by a team from the University of Utah School of Medicine is that it works in a fundamentally different way to existing treatments, which often fail to work in patients with the most aggressive form of the disease. Full Story

Diabetes or hypertension self-treatment leading to kidney failure

Malaysians who self-treat diabetes or hypertension by buying over-the-counter medication run the risk of kidney failures, a specialist warned. Consultant nephrologist Dr Goh Bak Leong said based on observations patients had the tendency to self-treat diabetes and hypertension after just one or two visits.

"Some patients may visit their doctors once or twice and then decide to buy their own medication instead of seeing their doctors on a regular basis. This lack of doctor's monitoring is dangerous. The conditions may worsen and the patients don't realize it." Full Story
