THE WINES OFAlain Graillot
|
Greetings!
It is an honour to represent artisan wineries who pour their lives into their work to produce the best and most natural wines possible. Among these producers is Alain Graillot. Following a career as an agrochemical engineer and following formal training in Burgundy under Jacques Seysses of Dominique Dujac, in 1988 he purchased vineyards in Crozes-Hermitage that had been organically farmed for decades and picked up where the original owner left off.
The flats around Hermitage were reputed to not be able to produce exceptional wines, but Alain Graillot proved the world wrong - his "La Guiraude" is one of the Rhone's most collectable wines, not only for its quality but its relative value. The reds offered here are from the fantastic 2010 vintage, which Robert Parker's Wine Advocate has rated 94 points and Wine Spectator rated 95-98 points while noting, "reds are racy and loaded with minerality; should top 2009".
"Graillot makes one of the few great Crozes-Hermitages, a wine so good many believe it to be the equal of Hermitage - at less than half the cost. This is a dark, brooding, edgy, Clint Eastwood of a wine, with flavours that wrestle each other in the glass. Spices, pepper, earth, blackberries and violets all collide in a delicious explosion. La Guiraude, a special selection of the best lots of wine, is made only in very good years. Not to worry. Graillot's regular Crozes-Hermitage is also pretty wonderful."
