New Wineries from Rogers & Company!
A Napa Rising Star and A Sonoma Icon

Greetings!

We are extremely excited to announce that we have added two more California wineries to our portfolio!  One a Sonoma icon, the other a rising star of Napa.

Ovid is a boutique property, producing little more than 500 cases per year of their namesake Bordeaux blend and a second wine called Experiment, a wine that is truly that, an Experiment with no prescribed blend in mind.  The flagship Ovid, masterfully crafted by Andy Erickson, further adds to the abundance of world-class wines coming from the Pritchard Hill area of St. Helena.  Neighbours include Continuum, Bryant Family, and Colgin.

In contrast to the upstart Ovid, our second new addition is Hanzell Vineyards which was established in Sonoma back in 1957 with one goal - to create American Chardonnay and Pinot Noir  as great as the best from Burgundy.  Their proven ability to age slowly and gracefully for many decades is second to none in California.

Please enjoy our presentation and visit Rogers & Company for catalogues, reviews and our new blog.

My best regards,
Chris.

Ovid Logo
Ovid was a Latin poet whose epic poem Metamorphoses is a narrative of Greek myths that tell of transformation and change - a fitting name for a winery who in only 12 years has transformed 15 acres on Pritchard Hill into one of Napa's most exciting wineries.

Following a career in software Mark Nelson, Dana Johnson and Janet Pagano purchased this rugged chunk of cliff overlooking St. Helena and proceeded to hire David Abreu, Napa's foremost viticulturalist to plant the high-density Bordeaux varieties; hired Andy Erickson, then of Screaming Eagle and now of Dancing Hares to develop the winemaking program and hired the world-famous Michel Rolland to act as a consultant to the winemaking team.

No expense was spared to create a winery to do one thing - create a great wine.  From sensors on each and every vine measuring real-time water usage to vertically integrated concrete fermentation tanks modeled after those at Chateau Petrus, everything here is done by hand and to exacting standards.

Please note, we have secured allocations of the 2009 and 2010, both of which have already received exceptional reviews.  This is an opportunity to start an amazing  vertical collection!
Ovid Napa Valley 2008   estimated at $245 per bottle
750ml, 3 bottles per case

"The 2008 Ovid (68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot) is a slightly more restrained and marginally lighter version of the 2007. Still, it is a delicious, full-throttle, multi-dimensional wine, with loads of red, blue and black fruits and hints of camphor and graphite as well as forest floor notes in a medium-bodied, restrained, but impressively authoritative style to drink over the next 15 or more years.
This operation has elicited considerable acclaim, given the talent involved. First of all is the terroir, a stunning location high on Pritchard Hill, a neighborhood filled with Napa superstars, such as Colgin, Bryant Family, Continuum, David Arthur, and Del Dotto. Add to that the level of talent - winemaker Andy Erickson, consultant Michel Rolland, viticulturalist David Abreu - and the result is essentially a think-tank of world-class quality. Yields are tiny (15 acres in vine), and the emphasis here is on putting together a blend with a high dosage of Cabernet Franc in the final assemblage. For that reason, the wines probably need slightly more time to strut their stuff. It has been my experience that Cabernet Franc needs several years to show complexity aromatically and put on weight in the bottle."

"(from iron-rich clay and rock soil similar to that of Dalla Valle):  Red-ruby.  Expressive aromas of raspberry, graphite, dried herbs and flowers.  Lush, generous and rather forward, offering plenty of early sexy appeal.  Finishes with broad, mouthcoating tannins and a firm spine of acidity.  This may shut down in bottle but it's quite tasty today."
93 points, International Wine Cellar, May/June 2011

"Rich and fleshy, with ripe plum, wild berry, mineral, cedar and anise flavours. Medium- to full-bodied, graceful and elegant, ending with a delicate aftertaste and a firm, minerally finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2012 through 2023. 500 cases made."

Hanzell Vineyards, established in 1957 by JD Zellerbach, a US Ambasador as well as industrialist and vintner, is renowned for its terroir-driven and age-worthy Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays.

During Ambassador Zellerbach's frequent trips to Europe in the 1950's to implement President Truman's Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, he learned to love the great wines of France.  Upon return to California, still working as owner and director of his company Crown-Zellerbach, he purchased 14 acres of land in the Mayacamas range overlooking the town of Sonoma and combined his wife's first name, Hana, and his last name, Zellerbach to create Hanzell Vineyards.

The sole purpose was to make Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as good as the best of Burgundy.  A winery was designed and built to resemble the press house at Clos du Vougeot, and in the spirit of innovation and quality-first winemaking many advancements came to fruition.  Hanzell became the first winery to use temperature controlled stainless steel fermenters, the first to isolate the malolactic bacteria and control it in barrel, the first to use inert gas on the bottling line to prevent oxidation, the first in California to use French oak for barriques, and the first to use "tankitos", movable one-ton steel fermentation tanks.  The quality of their nursery vines has led numerous wineries throughout the U.S. to plant the "Hanzell clone".

Hanzell's wines are best known for their ageability.  In fact the winery recommends aging it....for as long as you'd like.

Hanzell produces only 5,000 cases annually and maintains a library of every vintage, to be released when they are deemed perfect to drink.  Recently in a tasting for "The Ambassador's Club", the member's wine club, the winery opened and released the 1970 Chardonnay and the 1970 and 1971 Pinot Noirs.  In fact, if you have any older Hanzell wines already and are interested in drinking them the winery can provide you the most recent notes and recommendations.

"I'm hard-pressed to think of a winery that makes more age-worthy wines, so if you're looking for a Chardonnay or Pinot Noir to stick in the cellar for enjoyment in a few years, these wines are two great bets."
James Laube for Wine Spectator, Dec 14, 2006

"Sebella" Chardonnay Sonoma Valley 2010
$49.95 per bottle, 12 bottles per case

SebellaChardonnay
"Sebella" is a bottling from vines being auditioned for the estate wine.  Although farmed to the same specification as those that contribute to the estate wine, these vines are from younger vineyard blocks and the fruit is treated to a regimen more suited to an early-drinking wine.  Just before the fermentation goes dry, the wine is racked into one-, two-, and three-year old barrels for six months of sur-lie aging.  Malolactic fermentation is inhibited to preserve the fresh, fruity qualities of Sonoma Valley Chardonnay.

We recommend that you decant all the Hanzell wines, including the "Sebella" line  to enhance the aromatics and flavours.  With the 2010 Sebella Chardonnay, one is immediately struck by the vibrancy of the aromas in this Chardonnay. Youthful and lively scents of honeysuckle, citrus blossom and guava are complemented by pear skin and that classic Hanzell minerality. Concentrated flavours of Anjou pear, honeydew melon and lemon focus and linger on the palate while clean acidity supports and balances the richness.

Hanzell Sonoma Valley Chardonnay 2009
$75.95 per bottle, 6 bottles per case

HanzellChardonnay
"No winery in California has more perseveringly demonstrated the singularity of its vineyard site--especially for its landmark Chardonnay."
Wine Spectator magazine

"Almost Chablis-like in its flintiness, this is intense and snappy, with a refreshing core of apple, citrus and pebble flavours. Slow to unfold but does so in a captivating manner, releasing subtle flavour nuances along the way. This wine has a great track record for being tight early and aging long. Best from 2013 through 2023. 2,074 cases made."

Hanzell Sonoma Valley Pinot Noir 2009
estimated $109.95 per bottle, 6 bottles per case

HanzellPN
Like all vintages of Hanzell Pinot Noir, the winery recommends aging this for a long time, but if you should choose to drink this early, a double-decant is recommended 1-2 hours before drinking to allow the wine to begin to open up and reveal its aromas and texture.

"The best Hanzell Pinot in a while. Fresh and snappy, offering firm tannins and a core of mineral-laced wild berry, mocha, cedar and dried berry notes. Shows great structure, depth, focus and persistence. A great cellar choice. Drink now through 2022. 1,551 cases made."
