Rogers & Company Newsletter

Super Sixes

September 2011

Greetings!

As a theme for this month's newsletter I have decided to focus on some of the wines that we offer in cases of six.  As you know we are required to sell by the unmixed case, so this format makes it easier on the wallet to try a new wine or share a case with colleagues or friends.  At the end I've also included magnums of Cain Concept 2007.  We only receive a tiny allocation of this exceptional wine in magnums each year.

As always, our prices are per-bottle, taxes in, exclusive of bottle-deposit.  Deliveries of more than one case is free of charge in the GTA.  If you live outside the GTA we can ship wines to your LCBO at no additional charge.  Please visit Rogers & Company for more information, links to our wineries' websites and an always up-to-date catalogue, or feel free to call me directly at 416-961-2294 x 29.

Please feel free to forward this to any friends or colleagues you may have who also love wine.

Most sincerely,

Chris.

Tiefenbrunner "Cuvée Anna" 2009 (Pinot Grigio/Pinot Bianco)

[750ml/6case]   $25.95

CuveeAnna Growing grapes in Italian Alps is no easy task.  Pitiful soils, cold and blustery alpine winds, no mechanization...a recipe for hard work and fantastic wine!

Tiefenbrunner's magical blend of Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco displays lovely aromatics of bartlett pear, granny smith apple, mineral and spice.  The mid-palate is quite rich and slippery.  The finish is racy with lovely natural acidity, giving the rich fruit flavours balance.

This wine drinks beautifully when young, but will also evolve gracefully over 2-3 years in your cellar.  A perfect pairing would be a baked goat cheese tartlette with fresh herbs.

Gaston Chiquet "Blanc de Blanc d'Aÿ" Grand Cru Brut NV
[750ml/6case]  $55.95

Chiquet NV While reading Rajat Parr's latest book Secrets of the Sommeliers (2010) I came across this wonderful passage:

"The house of Chiquet, which first planted vines in 1746, was also, in 1935, the first grower to begin to produce, instead of just sell grapes. Chiquet makes another wine that is highly notable, a wine that every sommelier and serious wine drinker should know about, Blanc de Blanc d'Aÿ. What is significant about this Chardonnay is that it comes from a Grand Cru-rated village that is known for its Pinot Noir. This is a reversal that makes little sense: why make Chardonnay from a place that is universally praised for Pinot? The wine tells you why. It is from a very old vineyard, and the wine proves the point about terroir in Champagne: it is not at all an expression of Chardonnay, but an expression of this place. If you are a terroir doubter, game over. Terroir clearly exists, and this wine proves it. Heavier and richer than other blanc de blancs, it drinks like a pinot noir - robust and juicy, speaking of berries, quince and honey - even though it is not."  page 161.

"The NV Brut Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs d'Aÿ is a gorgeous, intense wine that captures the richness of Chardonnay from these five old-vine parcels in the village of Aÿ  This broad-shouldered, graceful Champagne possesses superb depth, focus and verve.  The finish impresses for its crystalline purity.  Anticipated maturity 2011-2015."

Gaston Chiquet "Special Club" Grand Cru Brut 2002

[750ml/6case]   $69.95

SpecialClubstriplabel

Only grower-producers who belong to the "Club Trésors de Champagne" can produce a "Special Club" bottling, which is submitted to and critiqued by other members of the club to determine if the quality is of sufficiently high standards to bear the "Special Club" seal.  Production is tiny and each Champagne is very unique.

"The fragrance is pure Pinot Noir; blueberry and grape-hyacinth; a chewy, vinous being, huckleberry; density and solidity, a highly specific, wine-like Champagne, as far from the commercial as you can imagine."

Terry Thiese, catalogue 2011

Alain Graillot Crozes Hermitage Blanc 2010  [750ml/6case]   $35.95

crozesblanc

Alain Graillot is one of the Rhone valley's most dynamic producers.  After leaving the agricultrual business, he began to make organically farmed, pesticide free, hand tilled wines.  His Crozes-Hermitage Rouge is a reference for the appellation, his selective bottling "La Guiraude" is highly collectable (currently in stock) and his Blanc is a thing of beauty.  Marsanne accounts for 80% of the blend and the other 20% is Roussanne.

The synergy of these grapes produces a bright and fruit forward wine, with lovely honeydew melon, pineapple and buttery notes, backed by fine minerality. The finish is quite long, with a lingering tangy, citrus note.

Vietti Barolo "Castiglione" 2007  [750ml/6case]   $72.95

Castiglione

"The 2007 Barolo Castiglione deftly balances the open, radiant personality of the vintage with considerable underlying structure. Warm, dense and full-bodied, the 2007 Barolo Castiglione flows effortlessly across the palate with generous fruit and fabulous overall balance. The wine was even better when I tasted it from bottle a few months later. It is another overachieving wine from Vietti and a bottle that is exceedingly fairly priced. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027."

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2006  [750ml/6case]  $50.95

Barbaresco

"The 2006 Barbaresco is a gorgeous, generous Barbaresco loaded with ripe dark fruit. This is an especially harmonious, refined Barbaresco from the Produttori that is also somewhat unusual for its dark, brooding personality. Licorice, leather and tar linger on the powerful finish. Today the wine is remarkable for its depth and concentration, while the aromatic complexity will develop in bottle. If the regular Barbaresco holds this much power, I can only wonder what the Riservas might have in store. Simply put, this is a marvelous effort.  Anticipated maturity: 2011-2031."

Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 2006  [750ml/6case]  $65.95

Brunello

"Medium red.  High-pitched aromas of raspberry, blood orange, minerals, mocha and cocoa powder:  I was reminded of Burgundy.  Wonderfully tight and perfumed in the mouth, with superb youthful definition to the raspberry and floral flavours.  Perfumed and light on its feet.  Finishes sharply delineated, firmly tannic and impressively long.  With three full days in the recorked bottle, this wine became denser and more minerallly, offering a leathery hint and terrific sexy breadth."
94 points, International Wine Cellar, July/August 2011

"Amazing aromas of freshly picked flowers and black cherries. Full to medium bodied, with medium tannins and a fruity finish. Coffee and cigar box undertones. More forward and ready to drink than some. Why wait?"

Falchini "Paretaio" 2007  [750ml/6case]  $27.95

Paretaio Paretaio is a single-vineyard Super-Tuscan blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.  The late Riccardo Falchini developed this wine with consulting enologist Giacomo Tachis.  Although Mr. Tachis' name may go unnoticed, the wine brands he developed for other wineries do resonate with collectors - Tignanello, Sassicaia, Solaia, and Ornellaia.

"The 2007 Paretaio is a superb wine, especially in its price point. Sweet dark cherries, spices, menthol and licorice come together beautifully in this fleshy, generous red. The round, caressing finish adds to an impression of considerable elegance. This is a superb value from Falchini. Paretaio is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2017."

Jasmin Côte Rôtie 2007  [750ml/6case]   $72.95

Jasmin2007bttl

While the 2009s hit the market, we were lucky to secure another parcel of the 2007, which was also a lovely vintage for a wine best enjoyed after a few years of cellaring.  Jasmin's wines are particularly feminine and elegant compared to the more masculine wines from the Côtes-Brune et -Blonde.

"I drank this last week in Montreal at the private restaurant 357; some people say it's the best restaurant in city. I had it with tempura soft-shell crabs. Fun combination. It showed subtle aromas of dried meat and game with dried raspberries. It was tight at first, but it opened beautifully. Full and velvety with a berry finish. Bright acidity at the finish. Better in 2015."

"Bright red. Smoky red berry and cherry scents are complicated by notes of potpourri, minerals, tobacco and cracked pepper. Racy on entry, then gains sweetness in the middle palate to go with its precise raspberry and bitter cherry flavours and note of violet pastille. Lively and focused wine with good finishing lift and mineral-driven persistence."

Domaine Brusset Gigondas "Les Hauts de Montmirail" 2009
[750ml/6case]   $49.95

Les hauts de Montmirail

Domaine Brusset was established in 1947, 24 years before the Gigondas AC was even in existence.  Below the jagged outcropping of rock called Les Dentelles, Les Hauts is farmed on terraced slopes, much like in the Douro.  The abundant sunshine in the southern Rhône and poor soils produce thick skinned, richly flavoured grapes and a hands-off traditional approach to winemaking guides the grapes to bottle.

Consistently one of the finest Gigondas wines made, Les Hauts de Montmirail is a dark and complex wine that pushes quality to the the upper-limits of the appellation.  If you are a Châteauneuf-du-Pape enthusiast, then you'll love this wine.

"The luxury cuvee, which can often age for 15 years or longer, is the Gigondas Les Hauts de Montmirail. The 2009 is composed of 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 25% Mourvedre. The Grenache is aged in tank and the Syrah and Mourvedre are kept in small barrels, of which one-fifth are new. This is a large-scaled, full-bodied, big, dense wine with an inky/purple colour as well as notes of graphite, blackberries, blueberries, charcoal and incense, and beautifully integrated tannins, acidity and alcohol. One of the superstars of the appellation in 2009, it should evolve for 10-15 years."

Peay Vineyards Pinot Noir "Pomarium" Sonoma Coast 2009

[750ml/6case]   $79.95

2009Pomarium

"Vivid ruby.  Sexy aromas of pungent cherry, spicecake and fresh rose, with an almost liqueur-like suggestion of raspberry compote.  Suave, silky and densely packed, with intense minerality giving the primary but complex red fruit and floral flavours terrific definition and cut.  Impressively balanced pinot with the spine to age slowly and gracefully.  The endless finish features harmonious tannins that are broad and very fine."

O'Shaughnessy Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

[750ml/6case]  $119.95

O'Shaughnessy Mt Veeder

What a vintage and what a wine!  Sean Capiaux has coaxed from the tiny grapes he grows on Mt. Veeder an absolute beauty!  We've only worked with O'Shaughnessy for a little under a year, but we have been floored by the quality coming out of this tiny boutique property near Angwin.

"A staggering wine of exceptional concentration, flavour dimension, and texture, the opaque blue/purple-tinged 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder boasts copious notes of smoked meats, subtle barbecue smoke, creme de cassis, charcoal, licorice, and background mountain flora. With terrific intensity as well as full-bodied power, this is a brilliant Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 25-30 years."

Ridge Geyserville 2009 Alexander Valley, Sonoma

[750ml/6case]  $49.95

[375ml/12case]   $25.95

Geyserville The three contiguous vineyards that make "Geyserville" were planted by Italian immigrants in the 1880's.  The wine is a "field blend" of Zinfandel, Carignane, Petit Sirah, Alicante Bouchet and Mataro.  These vines were all planted in a "Plant whatever grows well together" style, as was the fashion of the time.

Because of the age of the vines and the combination of flavours and textures each vintage is unique and extraordinary....yet they do have elements in common, including the blackest of blackberry fruit, ripe plum, rich cherry, and cedar.

Geyserville's unique flavours are attributed to the unusually high percentage of Carignane.  Among the most age-worthy of Ridge wines, Geyserville often drinks beautifully well beyond 10 years of age.

The 2009 has not been reviewed yet, but it is perennially a 90-94 point wine, much like the Lytton Springs.

"Ridge "Lytton Springs" 2008  Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma

[750ml/6case]   $49.95

[375ml/12case]   $25.95

Lytton NV

"The 2008 Lytton Springs Proprietary Red, a blend of 74% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah, and 5% Carignane, possesses a deep ruby/purple colour and good acidity, and a more closed style than the Geyserville, with a firmer, more restrained overall personality. It should drink well for 7-8 years."

91-93 points, Wine Advocate,  February 2010

"Saturated ruby.  Dark berries, cherry, sassafras and smoky Indian spices on the nose, with an intense vanilla quality and a hint of dried violet.  Opulent, palate-coating blackberry and mulberry flavours show a spicy, oaky quality, with gentle acidity providing lift.  Dusty tannins add grip to the vanilla-tinged finish, which clings impressively.  I have no doubt that this wine will absorb its oak with a few years or so of bottle age."

Cain "Concept" 2007  [1500ml/6case]   $115.95

Concept The benchlands of Napa Valley sit at the base of the Vaca and Mayacamas ranges where the hills meet the valley floor.  In these locations, gravelly mounds have been deposited by ancient alluvial processes and by the erosion of the mountain soils.  The drainage is excellent and mineral content is perfect for Bordeaux varietals.

To blend Concept, Cain sources fruit from some of the most famous benchland vineyards - To Kalon, Truchard, Georges III and Missouri Hopper.

The 2007 shows the quality of the vintage, pure fruit flavours, excellent balance of acidity and tannin, and density on the palate that bodes well for many years of evolution.  In magnum format, I would suggest that this has 15-20 years ahead of it.
