Stop the press!... Coming to Ontario in April

O'Shaughnessy Estate Winery
and
Capiaux Cellars

Greetings!

Rogers & Company's mission for 25 years has been to bring the finest wines from around the world to Ontario.  Some are in the value price category like the wines from Cannonball and Tiefenbrunner; some are more collectable and built for the cellar like wines from Shafer, Caymus and Fontodi; but most straddle that sweet middle-ground, both cellar worthy and affordably drinkable, like Belle Glos' Pinot Noirs, Ridge's Zinfandels and Chiquet's Champagnes.

So, I am excited to introduce you to O'Shaughnessy Estate Winery and Capiaux Cellars.

O'Shaughnessy produces wines from two of Napa's famed regions: Howell Mountain and Mount Veeder. Robert Parker calls O'Shaughnessy "One of the superstar estates on Howell Mountain" (Dec 2009).  Since the 2003 vintage, when the estate vineyards began producing all the fruit for the winery, Mr. Parker has awarded no less than 94 points to both of the O'Shaughnessy Cabernets, and the Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon has received 98 points for the 2008 vintage!

Capiaux Cellars is the personal winery of O'Shaughnessy's winemaker and COO Sean Capiaux.  For 16 years he has been dedicated to making only artisan Pinot Noir, in small lots, from very highly respected vineyards such as Freestone Hill, Widdoes and Pisoni.  Robert Parker also praises this winery, stating that Sean "demonstrates a Midas touch with Pinot Noir." (Feb 2011).

We plan to build verticals for our clients of the O'Shaughnessy Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, by offering the 2006 first, then taking a small parcel of the the 2005 and then the 2007. All wines will be packed in sixes, around $100 per bottle.   Clients who have ordered the 2006 and 2005 will have first refusal on subsequent vintages.

We also plan to offer a small parcel of the 2005 Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, but our allocation is extremely small, so we may not be able to fulfill all requests, we can only promise to be fair in our distribution of it.

The first Pinot Noirs from Capiaux that we will be offering are Chimera 2009 and "Pisoni Vineyard" 2008. The Chimera is a blend of fruit from four vineyards within the Sonoma Coast appellation, most prominently from the Petaluma Gap, a region best known for "nervy and tense" fruit quality that gives the wines vibrancy.  This wine comes in cases of twelve at approximately $42 per bottle, making it more special than an "everyday" wine, but certainly not at a price that should have you 'hands-off'.

The Capiaux "Pisoni Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2008 is certainly a "special occasion" wine from one of California's most famed vineyards.  Farmed by the incomparable Gary Pisoni, who makes his own label called Roar, he sells his grapes to a number of California's top Pinot Noir producers.  Of the 10 who made Pisoni Pinot Noirs in 2008, the Capiaux is the most affordable, with Patz & Hall's and Bernardus' fetching close to $100 in the U.S.

This is a powerful wine, as is the style of the Santa Lucia Highlands.  The budwood for this section of the Pisoni property is planted to its own rootstock (which is very rare) and comes from Domaine de le Romanée-Conti's "La Tache" Grand Cru Monopole vineyard.

Please visit these websites for more information and images, O'Shaughnessy and Capiaux.   If you would like to reserve any cases, please let me know.  As always, our up-to-date price lists and further information about our entire portfolio is available at Rogers & Company.

Sincerely,

Chris.

O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 Howell Mountain

[750ml/6case]   est'd $100,  ETA mid-April 2011

O'Shaughnessy Estate Winery is one of Napa Valley's most beautiful properties.  Eleven thousand square feet of caves have been carved into the hillside behind the property, where the wines rest for up to two years in oak barrels before being released.  The winery team believes strongly that the wine benefits from the playing of classical music in the cellars.  I've never read any reports that this is scientifically proven, but based on the critics' praise, they must be on to something!

"The only 2006 I tasted is a re-evaluation of the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain, which is performing better now than it did last year. A dense purple colour in addition to plenty of creme de cassis, crushed rock, blueberry, and brioche-like notes are found in this full-bodied Cabernet. It avoids the rustic tannins of this vintage, and exhibits good sweetness and purity of fruit. Consume it over the next 15-20 years."

94 points, Robert Parker, December 2010

O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 Howell Mountain  [750ml/6case]  est'd $100, ETA late-June 2011

O'ShaughnessyHMCab

"The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a beauty, with dark ruby/purple colour and a big sweet nose of tobacco leaf intermixed with black currant, black cherry, new saddle leather, and white chocolate. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, with superb purity, texture, and length. It's approachable now but promises to be better in 3-4 years, and last for at least 15 or more."

95 points, Robert Parker, December 2010

O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 Mt. Veeder  [750ml/6case]    est'd $120,    ETA mid-2011

O'Shaughnessy Mt Veeder

"The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder has a soaring bouquet of smoked meats, black fruits, espresso roast, lavender, and creme de cassis. Gorgeously rich, with high tannins, high extract, and superb purity and concentration, this is a beautiful wine that may be even better than my score. The good news, I think, is that they produced nearly 1,000 cases in this vintage, and by Napa standards, this is still a decently priced Cabernet Sauvignon for such compelling quality."

95 pts, Robert Parker, December 2007

Capiaux "Chimera" Pinot Noir 2009 Sonoma County [750ml/12case]   est'd $42.00,  ETA mid-April 2011

Chimera2008

Sean Capiaux describes his winemaking style as neo-classic, in that he employs modern equipment to produce non-interventious wines which he ferments naturally, and then bottles unfined and unfiltered. Sean's technique allows the varietal character to showcase beautifully.

"Most Burgundy varietals did well in 2009 because it was such a perfumed vintage given the cooler temperatures. The lacy, elegant Chimera possesses a fragrant bouquet of spring flowers intermixed with red and blue fruits as well as mossy underbrush characteristics, a round, generous mouthfeel and sweet, silky tannins. Already delicious as well as complex, it can be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years."

91 points, Robert Parker, February 2011

Capiaux "Pisoni Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2008

[750ml/12case]  est'd $65.95       ETA  late-spring 2011

CapiauxPisoni2008

"The 2008 Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard (aged in 50% new French oak) exhibits gorgeous scents of raspberries, flowers, forest floor and a hint of graphite. This opulent, rich, medium to full-bodied Pinot is super-pure, beautifully textured and luscious. Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years."

93 points, Robert Parker, February 2011

"Deep red-ruby, the darkest of the range. Aromas of black raspberry, minerals, licorice, violet and underbrush, with a menthol nuance. Dense and thick on entry, then powerful and full in the middle, with enough depth and sweetness to the dark fruit and spice flavours to avoid coming off as warm. A big, full, flavourful wine that finishes with broad, nicely buffered tannins and much more sweetness than the Wilson bottling that preceded it. Capiaux referred to this one as "the tank." Probably not for Burgundy purists, but this is a major mouthful of California pinot noir."

93 points, International Wine Cellar, May/June 2010
