How long have you lived in Arlington?
Almost three years

What inspires you to work on environmental issues?
After JMU I lived in Huntington Beach, CA for about three years where I picked up surfing. It was incredible to me how such beautiful beaches were so adversely affected by pollution. Some days it wasn't even safe to go in the water. I guess you could say it opened my eyes and made me start taking responsibility for my actions.  Now I'm at the stage where I want to inspire others to do the same.

Which of the Green Living Challenge actions that you've completed are you the most proud of?
1) We conducted an energy audit of our home. It was eye opening to say the least. I actually wrote a blog about it if you are interested.
2) I am using my bicycle for errands around town and have ordered a Smart Car.
3) I am planning to participate in an upcoming conservation project with The Surfrider Association called the Clean Water Paddle on the Potomac.

Which of the Green Living Challenge actions that you've completed was the hardest to do? Why?
For Arbour Realty, we want to buy products made from recycled materials whenever possible. The most challenging so far is the signs we put out in front of people's homes. After weeks of research, we finally located a material called Richlite. It is made of recycled paper and wood without the use of toxic chemicals. It's a durable material that is used in everything from skateboard ramps to countertops. We think the signs look pretty cool too.

Please describe any Green Living Challenge actions or other environmental lifestyle changes that you're working on now.
Our next project is to compost.  After our second year of gardening it is becoming apparent that we need better fertilizer and we want to continue reducing waste.

What tips do you have for others who want to incorporate green ideas into their lifestyle?
Before you make decisions as a consumer, explore your options. It's amazing how many product and services are available offering a green opportunity for the same (or similar) price. I think EnviroCab is a great example.  You pay the same fare, but the hybrid automobile you ride in is creating less pollution and using less gas.
