Congratulations to This Issue's Greenovator
Our home has a 1600-watt photovoltaic system, mounted on a southwest-facing roof. In a one year period, the system generated 50 more kilowatt-hours than we used. We also have a solar air heater with an integrated solar-powered fan and a solar-powered attic fan. The kitchen includes energy efficient appliances and there is no garbage disposal. All our lighting is fluorescent or LED. We have blown-in insulation in the attic. There's a large organic fruit and vegetable garden, and we do extensive composting using kitchen and garden waste, Starbucks used coffee grounds, neighbors' yard waste, and sawdust and wood chips from community businesses. Other green components of our garden include a rainwater harvesting system and the excluxive use of electric and push lawn mowers. I also use a solar oven on all the sunny days of the year, have made organic cotton and wool window quilts, mattress pads, and bed quilts, and take the ART bus and Metro to work (and don't have a car). -Rose, McLean, Virginia

Dear , Thanks for being a part of Arlington's Green Living Challenge. We're focusing our actions in September on shopping responsibly. Before buying anything, consider whether you really need it in the first place. Use Less Stuff offers detailed information and research on conserving resources and reducing solid waste. If you do need to make a purchase, look first for a used item. There are many area flea markets, yard sales, and thrift stores or you can find used items online via freecycle and Craig's List. For stuff you no longer want, do donate or sell items instead of throwing them away. According to the U.S. EPA's web site, there are studies showing that between two and five percent of items in the trash could be reused. Our Green Living Pledge actions in the Responsible Purchasing category are: - Use reusable shopping bags, coffee mugs, and water bottles.
- Purchase products made from recycled materials.
- Choose fair-trade and organic products.
- Instead of new items, buy used products.
- Commit to buying food and other products from local farmers and businesses.
Remember - the deadline for the Green Living Neighborhood Challenge is November 1. Here are the latest neighborhood standings. Featured Event:
