Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment
Green Living Challenge Update (Volume 1, Issue 5)
Congratulations to This Issue's Greenovator
Tierney and her rain barrel

We've just ordered a battery operated lawn mower! We're told that we will hear the birds singing while we mow and we can save 141 pounds of pollutants from going into the air by not using a gas mower.

We recycle all our glass, plastic, and paper products and we compost. I've heard people say that they don't want to compost because it smells. Oh yes, it smells all right. We love the rich, earthy smell of our compost. Our vegetable garden loves it and the birds love us when we turn the compost bin over. It's an absolute feast of worms and insects, this is five star
dining.

After signing up for the green living challenge in 2007 we realized we needed a rain barrel. We made our barrel, proudly carried it home and set it up. We painted it all pretty and then invited everyone to come over and have a look.

Dear ,

Thanks for being a part of Arlington's Green Living Challenge. We're focusing this month's activities on Conserving Energy. For the average American, your energy use in the home is your largest contributor to global warming. One simple way to save is by reducing vampire electricity, or appliances and gadgets that continue to suck electricity even when they're off. Read below for more tips and our pledge activities that can save you money and conserve energy.

Upcoming events:
  • Saturday, July 26. Rain Barrel Workshops.
  • Sunday, July 27. Peru Festival.
  • Sunday, August 3. Ecuador Festival.
  • August 7-10. Arlington County Fair.
  • Saturday, August 23. Courthouse Farmers Market.
Details below and on our web site.

 Conseving Energy
To save up to 10% on your electricity bills, unplug appliances and gadgets when they're not in use including VCRs, DVD players, stereos, and computers. You can also plug them into a power strip and switch the strip off.

The Arlington County Libaries also have Kill A Watt meters available to check out to measure how efficient your appliances are.

The complete list of activities in the Conserving Energy section of the ACE pledge include:
  • Reducing vampire electricity
  • Changing to energy efficient lighting (apartments/condos only)
  • Purchasing renewable energy like wind power
  • Conducting an energy audit
  • Installing a solar water heater
