Reserve a
Courthouse Ornament
Second in a series, the 2008 ornament features the Hinsdale County Courthouse.  The Courthouse is associated with settlement and development of Lake City during the late 1800's mining era.  It has been the county seat since its 1877 construction.

The Hinsdale County Courthouse is Colorado's oldest courthouse which continues to be utilized as a courthouse.  This frame building is Italianate style, as reflected in its clapboard exterior, bracketed cornice, corner boards, frieze board, transoms, and narrow windows with crown molding.

The structure is historically notable based also on its close association with nationally recognized historic figures such as Suan B. Anthony and Colorado cannibal Alferd Packer.

Ornaments are $20 (includes taxes) plus $3 to ship outside Lake City.  2007 Miners and Merchants Bank ornaments still available.

Lake City DIRT has conducted several surveys, including a previous Resident Survey, a Business Owner Survey, and a Tourist Intercept Survey with the Colorado Center for Community Development.  The results from these surveys have provided feedback on our community and efforts, and what further improvements can be made.

Projects directly linked to the results from some of these surveys include:
  • The 2007 and 2008 Downtown Boardwalk Projects (identified need:  to improve pedestrian patheways downtown)
  • Buy Local, Eat Local, Be Local! consumer awareness campaign (identified need:  perception that everyday items are not available in Lake City)
  • Lake City Community Youth Corps (identified need:  activities for youth ages 12 - 15 years)

A recent study - the Economic Feasibility Study for the Region - was funded through a Rural Business Opportunity Grant.  We are using the action items identified in this report to strengthen and revitalize the economics of our rural area.   This study and the results of previous surveys can be found on our website (lakecitydirt.com).

DIRT is currently conducting three short surveys:
1) Hidden Talent Survey - to identify untapped work force potential in the area
2) Resident Survey - a repeat of the survey conducted in 2005 to identify progress and new challenges
3) Downtown Design - to collect ideas for downtown improvements

To complete the electronic surveys, go to www.lakecitydirt.com and click on each survey.  To request a hard-copy, call our office (970-944-3478) or email ed@lakecitydirt.com Please take the time to provide us with your opinion and ideas on these important themes.

Enjoy the blissful month of June!
