Volunteer Spotlight
angela
Dynamo Angela Hollingsworth  serves as DIRT's Promotion Committee chair and brings professional graphic design to our Main Street program.  Angela has been instrumental in helping her committee create several successful promotional events, including the Third Street Market, Missing Mistletoe hunt, and Art Walk and Auction.  Lake City DIRT is a memorable Main Street program (among the nearly 2,000 communities) because of a unique name and a bright and attractive look (plus dedicated volunteers and all around cool location).

Angela also runs her own graphic design and printing business.  She is on the Marketing Board, offers affordable design work to local businesses and nonprofit groups, and maintains several design clients from out of the area.   Lately, she has joined the staff of Team Murphy Realty.

Thank you, Angela, for all your bring to our programs.

The Economic Feasibility Study identified the significant sales leakage to neighboring towns.  A previous DIRT resident survey indicated that there was a lack of awareness of the everyday items available for sale in Lake City.

By doing business locally, we strengthen our immediate economy and turnover dollars in the community longer.   According to national statistics, every dollar spent at a local place of business is usually spent 6 to 15 times before it leaves the community.  $1 becomes $6 which becomes $15 in community value.

The Hinsdale County/Lake City Chamber of Commerce and Lake City DIRT are partnering in a Think Local consumer-awareness campaign.
  • Several locals have volunteered to shop local for the month of May and blog their experiences (www.lakecitydirt.com)
  • One break-out session of the upcoming Regional Economic Development Summit will be Positioning Your Business to Serve Local Markets.  Please join us!  (May 16)
  • A list of "everyday items" is being compiled.  Business owners or shoppers - please feel free to email the items and shop names to ed@lakecitydirt.com
  • Research quantitative data on a specific list of products, the price and the added cost of fuel/time and share that data.
Set your own Think Local goals.  Perhaps set a percentage goal for yourself (like 10% local products/goods) or all gifts for a year purchased in local gift shops.  Consider making the trip to Gunnison twice a month instead or four or pre-planning and buying groceries in bulk from the 2,000 page catalog available at the Country Store.

And discuss it - with your friends and neighbors, with local business owners and people on the streets - this idea of shopping and supporting a community.

Respectfully,

Kristine Borchers
